My sister Alli and I always try to stop people dropping cigarette butts (烟蒂) everywhere. We have done this for seven years.
One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so dirty that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping cigarette butts. We called it “No Butts About It”.
At first, we drew pictures with letters “The earth is not your ashtray (烟灰缸)” on them. We put up the pictures in our hometown—in parks, on walls, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts does harm to the earth.
Most smokers don’t think that dropping butts harms the earth. But it does! All rubbish does.
Later, we wrote to factories and offices and asked them for money to buy ashtrays and give them to smokers. We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them so they didn’t have to drop butts.
Now we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes. Some companies would do it.
Many people have started to join our group since it began. Today there are 45 other groups of “No Butts About It” in America. And there are also groups in England, Australia and India! Many newspapers have written about my sister and me over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for our good work.
But we are not interested in prizes. We just want to make the earth a better and cleaner place for animals, plants, and people. One day it will be.
4. For seven years, the writer and the sister have tried to ________.
A. get people to stop smoking
B. win the prize for their work

5. What do people in the group usually do?
A. They write to companies and offices to ask them not to make cigarettes
B. They buy some cigarette packs for people to place the butts in them
C. They carry the ashtrays with them so they don’t have to drop butts
D. They put up pictures around to tell people dropping butts will harm the earth.
6. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A. ashtrays B. money C. smoker D. factories and offices
7. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Seven Years B. No Butts About It

Do you love Beats headphones, True Religion jeans, and UGG shoes? These are some of the most popular brands (牌子) around. They are also expensive. But some experts say they are not much better than cheaper brands.
For example, Jim Wilcox works for Consumer Reports. He tested all kinds of headphones. He says that $80 Koss Pro headphones provide basically the same quality and comfort as Beats. So why do people pay twice or even 10 times as much for the hottest brands? Experts say it’s because fashionable, expensive brands send a message. Brands say “I belong” or “I can afford it”.
Some people think that expensive brand names are worth the price. They say that some designer clothes really are top quality and that they last longer than cheaper brands. Some teenagers choose to wear popular brands because these brands make them feel good about themselves.
Alexandra Allam, 17, likes to buy brand-name products. “I’d rather spend the extra (额外的) money getting something I know I’ll be satisfied with,” she says. Her friend Emmy Swan agrees, saying, “As long as you can afford it, it seems reasonable to buy what you want. ” But not all teenagers agree. “Spending hundreds of dollars for designer brands is stupid and unreasonable,” says Daniel Steinbrecher, 16. “It’s fake (假的) happiness. ”
People who are against wearing expensive brand names say that many designer brands aren’t any better. “It’s wasteful to buy things just because they are popular,” says Edmund Williams, 15. “You’ll feel better if you buy things because you like them. If you have extra money to spend, it will be better to give it to people in need. ”
8. The example of Jim’s report wants to tell us ________.
A. popular brands make people comfortable
B. Koss Pro headphones are better than Beats’
C. the hottest brands are of the highest quality
D. lesser-known brands may offer the same quality as name brands
9. According to experts, people choose the hottest brands probably ________.
A. for their better quality
B. to show off
C. for their better designs
D. to belong to a special group
10. What does Edmund think of expensive brands?
A. They make him feel confident.
B. They are not worth the price.
C. They need to improve their quality.
D. They pay too much attention to personal likes.
11. The text is mainly about ________.
A. how to buy things reasonably
B. the competition between brands
C. the different values of teenagers
D. whether expensive brands are worth high prices
(D)
We all know the value of taking a walk in the fresh spring weather. It allows your mind to relax and forget about the problems in everyday life. Studies have commonly shown the benefits of being around green spaces, including gardens, parks and forests.
But did you know that being in contact with these natural surroundings during childhood could positively impact (影响) your mental health as an adult?
A study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) surveyed 3,600 people from all over Europe, including Spain, the Netherlands, Lithuania and the UK.
The all-adult study gave participants a questionnaire (问卷) on how frequently they used natural spaces during childhood—for example, playing in a garden, riding a bike in the park or hiking in a forest They were also asked about the importance they put on using such places
Volunteers were then given a psychological (心理的) test, which included a variety of questionnaires and problem-solving activities, to analyze their nervousness and feelings of depression (抑郁) within a four-week period.
The results showed that the people who were more exposed (暴露的) to natural spaces had higher mental health scores compared to those with lower childhood exposure—as did those who attached higher importance to using green spaces.
The study’s coordinator (协调员), Wilma Zijlema, wrote that the results “show the importance of childhood exposure to natural spaces for the development of a nature appreciating attitude and a healthy psychological state in adulthood”. She also stressed the importance of “recognizing the implications (含义) of growing up in environments with limited opportunities for exposure to nature”.
According to the study, 73 percent of Europe’s population only has limited access (接触机会) to natural spaces. Mark, director of ISGlobal’s Urban Planning, said that “Many children in Europe lead an indoor lifestyle. . . so we call on policy makers to improve the availability of natural spaces for children. ”
While this study was based in Europe, a lack of green spaces can affect anyone, anywhere. So remember to make time to immerse yourself in nature, as your mental health is just as important as the physical one.
12. What is the purpose of the ISGlobal’s study?
A. To examine the advantages of taking a walk.
B. To understand the mental health problems of children.
C. To see how childhood experiences shape adult life.
D. To study the influence of childhood exposure to natural spaces
13. What do Paragraphs 7-8 mainly talk about?
A. The results of the study.
B. The value of the study.
C. The method of the study.
D. The process of the study.
14. What does the underlined word “immerse” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Lose oneself in something.
B. Understand something.
C. Protect against something
D. Imagine doing something.
15. How does the author state (陈述) the ideas?
A. By comparing numbers. B. By taking examples.
C. By explaining a survey. D. By telling a story.
