Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals (信号). Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks (轨道). The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean “take care” and a white light meant “go”.
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go”. So the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care” light was changed to white.
During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.
Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.
19. Why was the color red used to mean “stop”?
A. It reminded people of traffic rules.
B. It helped trains run smoothly.
C. It gave people a warning of danger.
D. It was the first color people thought of.
20. What does the underlined word “swapped” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Designed. B. Exchanged. C. Suggested. D. Compared.
21. In which order did the “take care” light develop?
a. A white light b. A green light. c. A yellow light.
A. a一c一b B. b一c一a C. a一b一c D. b一a一c
22. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The advantages of traffic lights. B. The history of traffic lights.
C. The importance of traffic lights. D. The meanings of traffic lights.

C
THE THIRD MONTH OF THE SCHOOL YEAR has now arrived. Have you noticed that when we talk about numbers, we naturally think of the number three?
In some ways, “three” is a number that has magical powers. You might have found that this number is all around us. Everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end. For example, we eat three meals a day. Traffic lights all over the world use three colors: red, yellow, and green. And there is the rule of three. It is an age-old writing skill. According to this rule, things can always become more satisfying to readers if they come in threes. Have you ever noticed how powerful ads use the rule of three to improve their marketing? Just do it. I’m loving it. Coke is it. These famous slogans(标语) are all three words long.
But what is it about the number three that makes it so magical? Well, it is because our brains enjoy thinking in patterns(规律). If there are no patterns, our brains will create them. And three is the smallest number needed to form a pattern. An audience member will usually only remember three things from a speech. Do you want something in your speech to keep in your audience’s minds? Put it forward to them in groups of three.
If we properly use the rule of three in our daily lives, we can make many things easier. For example, many people like to add lots of tasks to their to-do lists. Experts, however, suggest they should just make three tasks. These top three tasks should be hard enough to be challenging while still being achievable. And the next time you are making New Year’s resolutions, consider listing only three things to work on. The longer your list is, the less likely you are to keep it!
23. How many examples are mentioned in Paragraph 2 to show “three” is all around us?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
24. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The reason why the number three is so magical.
B. How to make a speech keep in the audience’s mind.
C. The reason why people only remember three things.
D. The ways that number three has magical powers.
25. According to the last paragraph, how can we make things easier?
A. Make three tasks as hard as possible. B. Take three as the lucky number.
C. Have only three resolutions to work on. D. Create three patterns in our brains.
26. Which of the following should be the best title for the passage?
A. Famous Slogans. B. Magical Threes. C. Small Patterns. D. Achievable Tasks.
【答案】23. C 24. A 25. C 26. B

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws (吸管) and bags. More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is considered to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, are good for the environment. They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation (毁林).
Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process (过程) than to make a newspaper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.
The most environment-friendly way is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. By increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
27. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph I refer to?
A. using plastic straws. B. using plastic bags. C. using paper products. D. using single-use things.
28. What does the writer think of the recycled paper?
A. It saves energy and water. B. It seems not to be a good idea.
C. It is better than single-use paper. D. It’s easy to make by recycling process.
29. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce the disadvantages of paper products.
B. To call on using products in an environment-friendly way.
C. To compare paper products with plastic products.
D. To explain why paper products are bad for the environment.
30. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】27. C 28. B 29. B 30. A
【解析】
【导语】本文主要讲述了出于对保护环境的考虑,纸制品和塑料制品都不要用,尤其是纸制品,最环保的解决方案是完全避免使用一次性产品。

词义猜测题。根据“More and more businesses are changing to paper products. Using paper is considered to be better than plastic.”可知越来越多的企业正在转向纸制品,因为使用纸张被认为比塑料更好。因此此处说的是使用纸制品。故选C。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process (过程) than to make a newspaper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.”可知回收过程需要更多的能源和水,且由再生纸制成的产品通常也是短命的。由此推知,作者觉得回收纸不是个好主意。故选B。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The most environment-friendly way is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again...make our earth a greener place!”
故选A。

Different types of maps have different uses.

Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long journeys. Different types of roads are given different numbers. For example, if you want to go to Wood Green, you just follow No. 621 Road and keep looking at the road signs.
Distribution maps (分布图) use colors or signs to show facts about an area. For example, where different languages are spoken, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or whether a place is short of water.
Some maps, such as railway maps, use straight lines to show everything. This is easy for people to read. Trains are fast. People don’t have to think about small places they go past. They just need to know the two ends of their trips.

During these times people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses.
A One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
D
A. B. C. D.
