Shane Gross is from Saskatchewan,Canada,a province far away from the sea,so his first
underwater experiences were in a cold, green lake with a disposable(一次性的)film camera.
Despite this,he's always been fascinated by the ocean, especially sharks, and he watched Jaws
countless times. In 2009,he backpacked through Australia and dived along the way, which inspired
him to pursue his passion seriously. In 2011,he moved to the Bahamas to work as a dive
instructor, which allowed him to spend more time in the water and improve his photography skills.
In 2017,while diving at one of their regular spots,"Sea Garden",Shane and his girlfriend
encountered a turtle ()They were deeply upset at the terrible scene-the turtle was trapped,
struggling, and ultimately dying.Realizing there was nothing they could do to save it,Shane
removed the abandoned fishing line wrapped around the turtle and documented the moment. His
photograph later won first place in the conservation category of the 2019 International Ocean Art
Underwater Photo Competition, bringing attention to the problem of sea waste that often goes
unseen.
When asked about his approach to creating remarkable underwater photography,Shane advises
underwater photographers to go beyond just one image. He encourages them to document the entire
英语(三)第3页(共8页)
scene they're passionate about, even if it means taking some shots above the water.Once you have
a story to tell, create a shot list and keep shooting until you have recorded it fully.
For Shane, spending time in the ocean is deeply fulfilling.“I live a marine(海¥的)lifestyle,”
he says."But most people don't share this connection."To bridge this gap,he created
Bahamas Underwater,a book combining stories and vivid imagery to introduce people to marine
ecosystems and their wonders.Shane recommends that taking time to admire the breathtaking
views of the ocean should be the initial step toward creating meaningful change-a shift from
indifference to active care.
24.What encouraged Shane to follow his passion seriously?
A.His experience in Australia.
B.His encounter with ocean animals.
C.His profession as a dive instructor.
D.His improvement of photography skills.
25.Why did Shane take a photo of the sea turtle?
A.To blame overfishing.
B.To protect natural habitats.
C.To highlight marine pollution.
D.To serve as material for his book.
26.What should underwater photographers do to create striking images?
A.Focus on the injured underwater animals.
B.Draw inspiration from the documented scenes.
C.Film the entire scene beneath and above water.
D.Devote themselves to a single photograph per dive.
27.What does Shane intend to do according to the last paragraph?
A.Advocate for marine conservation.
B.Promote his book Bahamas Underwater.
C.Describe more details of marine ecosystems.
D.Criticize people who ignore environmental issues.
C
After an injury, some animals can regrow almost every cell in their bodies.Their abilities have
long fascinated researchers. Now scientists are taking what they have learnt from these animals to
human cells.
A zebrafish can go from being paralyzed (to moving smoothly.Mayssa Mokalled at
Washington University has identified a population of cells which are similar to human fetal
astrocytes (in the zebrafish that are important for this recovery. After an injury,
astrocytes create a protective barrier around the damaged site.
When Mokalled's team introduced the same molecules (involyed in the activation of the
cells that achieve regeneration in zebrafish into human astrocytes, the cells started to look and
behave more like those of the zebrafish. In initial studies, when the researchers transplanted the
transformed human cells into mice, the cells seemed more effective at creating the protective
barrier."I would love to see this go all the way to treatment in humans,"says Mokalled.
But the distance between zebrafish and humans is wide.Almada,a stem-cell biologist,is
instead looking at the lizard.Able to regenerate an entire tail,Lizard is the closest living relative to
humans.Humans and lizards share many of the same genes."It'll be more translatable to human
biology, because they have a lot of the same machineries at the DNA level,"says Almada.
Almada described how a population of muscle stem cells in lizards regenerates the animal's tail.
The cells are similar to those found in mice and humans, except that the lizard version can make
muscle tissue, which the mouse and human versions cannot,he says.Almada hopes to work out
how the lizard cells achieve this and eventually apply that to muscle growth in humans to treat
degenerative muscular diseases, strengthen muscles in older people and treat wounds.
Florian Raible,a stem-cell biologist is studying yet another super-recovering
animal-Platynereis dumerilii."It's a model for good regeneration, because its nervous system has
similarities to that of humans, which makes it a relevant model for research."says Raible.

A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties
appear to have lost some of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change
intensified droughts, the findings are vital for developing corn varieties with stronger adaptability.
An essay, published in the journal Science, notes how plant roots branch toward water and
avoid dry spaces in soil."Plants are wise in the way they 'see'where water is in soil, and the genes
(that are responsible for that play an important role in helping the plant create a root system
that is enhanced for efficient water uptake, said Jose Dinneny, the study's senior author and a
professor of biology in Stanford's School of Humanities and Sciences.
The Dinneny lab had previously revealed the fine sensitivity of corn roots for spotting water, and
further studies showed that this sensitivity heavily depended on the specific variety of corn.
For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in
roots, making it possible to analyze the responses of 250 corn varieties that reflect the genetic pool
present in modern corn reproducing. They discovered that corn varieties adapting to grow in
tropical (or subtropical areas like Mexico were very good at making new root branches
toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapting to temperate (
regions of North America frequently grew roots in many directions without distinguishing between
dry and wet areas in the soil.
This work was made possible through an international cooperation of several research groups.
"Researchers need to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn
varieties can be developed with more drought-adaptive root systems, but the findings highlight the
importance of studying these localized responses at root tips",said lead author Johannes Scharwies,
a postdoctoral scholar in Dinneny's lab.
32.Which of the following drives the research on more adaptable corns?
A.Worsened soils.
B.More severe droughts.
C.Poorer water quality.
D.Greater demand for corn.
33.What does paragraph 2 focus on about the research?
A.Its procedure.
B.Its significance.
C.Its theoretical basis.
D.Its practical value.

34.What can be inferred about corn varieties from temperate regions?
A.They exhibit stronger drought resistance.
B.They tend to grow roots deeper into the soil.
C.They are genetically superior in water absorption.
D.They are less efficient in adapting to water distribution.
35.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Farm Innovation:Corn Grown in Localized Soil
B.Genetic Differences in Corn Varieties'Root Growth
C.Corn Roots:Adaptability and Genetic Insights in Drought

The historic city of Suzhou is crossed with canals.Old whitewashed buildings line the banks.
A century ago some of these would have been Chaguans,or traditional teahouses, where locals
gathered to discuss the news or conduct business.Today visitors are more likely to find shops
serving a different kind of drink. There are dozens of Starbucks outlets in Suzhou,as well as other
coffee sellers.36 And it became the country with the most branded coffee shops in the world.
The early history of coffee in China is unclear. It is reported that it was Danes who opened the
first coffee shop in the country in the 1830s.37 That was partly because the Qing dynasty
looked down upon foreigners and sought to prevent their influence.A century later,Lu Xun,a
celebrated author, wrote that he didn't drink the stuff,"I always thought it was for the
westerners."He and most other Chinese people preferred tea.
38 After China introduced market reforms and opened up to the world in the 1980s,
foreign firms such as Maxwell House and Nestle brought instant coffee to the country. They
appealed to local tastes, making their mixes sweeter and less bitter than what they sold elsewhere.
39 Holding a Starbucks cup became a status symbol for them.
Today,a wider range of the population owes thanks to the rise of domestic coffee chains selling
affordable coffee.The leader is Luckin Coffee,with over 20,000 outlets.Starbucks,by comparison,has
7,300 shops.A cup of basic Luckin coffee is about a third of the price of an equal Starbucks
offering.Luckin's sales in China exceeded Starbucks'for the first time in 2023.40
A.Last year China exceeded America.
B.Both chains are expanding into smaller cities.
C.Unfortunately, the drink didn't catch on then.
D.It was totally a different story fifty years later.
E.Rising incomes led to more coffee consumption.
F.Most coffee consumers were young clerks in big cities.
G.The company's freshly served coffee was favorably new to China.
