Passage 1
Do you want to know what your friends are really like? Take a look at their music playlist. More than 36,000 people, from all over the world, took part in an experiment (实验). It compared their personalities with how much they liked different musical styles. The results show that personalities do influence what we listen to. Here’s what certain musical styles say about who you are.
RockLike the sound of loud guitars and heavy drum beats? This type of music sounds very exciting, but fans of it are often quite gentle.

The songs you choose to be part of your life make you different from others. But no matter what style you like, music is for everyone. And enjoying different types of music lets you get a taste of cultures you might not have experienced before. So experiment with your playlist!

Passage 2
Rhythm: The Soul of All Music
Every piece of music has one necessary part—rhythm. It is the regular beat that makes us tap our feet or nod our heads when we listen to songs. Without clear rhythm, music will sound messy and hard to follow.
Different music styles carry totally different rhythmic feelings. Soft folk music has slow, gentle rhythm, which makes listeners calm down. Pop songs own light and catchy beats, so people love to sing along to them. Rap stands for fast, strong rhythm with spoken lyrics. Jazz uses special swing rhythm that jumps freely. Even Chinese traditional music like pipa solos has its own unique rhythmic rules.
Many students think feeling rhythm is a born talent. In fact, it can be trained easily. You can clap hands to songs every day, or try simple percussion instruments. As you practice more, you will quickly catch the hidden beat inside any music.
Rhythm connects music with our hearts. No matter what style you love, feeling the rhythm lets you truly enjoy the beauty of music.

Passage 3
Music and Emotions
Have you ever wondered why certain songs make you feel happy, sad, or energetic? Scientists have discovered that music has a powerful effect on our emotions. This is because music activates different parts of our brains. How Music Affects Our Mood
When we listen to music, our brains produce a chemical called dopamine. This chemical is linked to feelings of pleasure and happiness. That’s why listening to your favorite song can instantly improve your mood. Fast-paced music with a strong rhythm often makes people feel energetic and excited. Slow, quiet music, on the other hand, can help people relax and reduce stress.Music and Memory
Music is also closely connected to memory. This is why a song can suddenly bring back a memory from long ago. When we hear a song that we used to listen to during a special time in our lives, we often remember that time clearly. This is because the brain connects music with emotions and experiences.Music Brings People Together
Music is a universal language that can bring people from different cultures together. When people share music, they share feelings and experiences. This is why concerts and music festivals are so popular—they create a sense of community and connection.Music in Our Daily Lives
Many people use music to improve their daily lives. Some listen to music while exercising to stay motivated. Others play music in the background while studying or working. Even babies respond to music! Studies show that music can help babies develop language skills and emotional understanding.

A.Different types of music. B.How music affects our emotions and lives.

Passage 4
Folk songs are created by common local people and passed down for generations. Unlike written songs made by famous musicians, most early folk songs had no clear writers. Local people sang them during farm work, festivals or family parties to express their true feelings.
Different places in China have special folk song styles. Northwest folk songs have loud, high voices, describing wide fields and mountains. Southern folk songs sound soft and sweet, talking about rivers, fish and quiet village life. Each place’s natural environment shapes its special music rhythm.
In the past, folk songs were only passed by mouth. Old people sang them to children, and kids remembered the words and rhythms. As time went by, some folk songs were lost because no one taught them anymore. To save this cultural treasure, many music workers traveled to villages to record old people’s songs from the last century. These recordings are kept in national music museums.
Now schools also take action. Many middle schools add folk music lessons to art classes. Students learn to sing local folk songs and play simple traditional instruments. Music festivals with folk styles are held every year in many cities. More young people start to fall in love with the old rhythms from our ancestors.
Every folk song carries stories of ordinary people. When we listen and sing them, we feel the warm rhythm of our history and culture.
1. Who created early folk songs?
A.Famous professional musicians B.Common local people
C.Foreign music experts D.Ancient poets only
2. Why do northwest and southern folk songs sound different?
A.Different local natural environments B.Different musical instruments in cities

C.Young people will never enjoy folk songs D.Folk songs should not be kept in museums
Passage 5
Have you ever listened to a piece of music that gave you chills? That feeling is not just in your head—it is real and it has a name: “frisson”, a French word that means “a shiver of excitement”.
Scientists have found that music can cause real physical changes in our bodies. When we listen to music that we enjoy, our brains release dopamine, a chemical that makes us feel pleasure and happiness. This is the same chemical that is released when we eat delicious food or spend time with people we love.
Music also helps us connect with others. When people sing together or play instruments in a group, their heartbeats actually begin to beat at the same rhythm. This is one reason why music has been part of human culture for thousands of years—it brings people together in a way that words alone cannot.
Perhaps the most amazing power of music is its ability to reach people who have lost their memories. Studies have shown that patients with Alzheimer’s disease can still remember and sing songs from their youth, even when they cannot remember their own family members. Music seems to be stored in a different part of the brain that is less affected by the disease.
Whether you are a professional musician or just someone who enjoys listening to the radio, music has the power to change your mood, bring back memories, and connect you to others. As the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.”
1. What is “frisson”?
A.A type of music from France. B.A shiver of excitement caused by music.
C.A chemical in the brain. D.A musical instrument.
2. What chemical does the brain release when we enjoy music?
A.Oxygen. B.Protein. C.Dopamine. D.Vitamin.
3. Why has music been part of human culture for thousands of years, according to the passage?
A.It helps people make money. B.It brings people together.
C.It is easy to learn. D.It makes people famous.
4. What can we learn about Alzheimer’s patients from the passage?
A.They can no longer hear music. B.They often forget how to play instruments.
C.They can still remember songs from their youth. D.They do not enjoy music anymore.
5. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain how to become a professional musician. B.To describe different types of music.
C.To show the power and importance of music. D.To compare music with other art forms.
Passage 6
The Power of Folk Music
When people think of music, they often think of pop stars and big concerts. But there is another kind of music that has been part of human culture for centuries—folk music.
Folk music is the traditional music of a community or country. It is passed down from generation to generation and reflects the history, culture, and daily life of ordinary people. Unlike pop music, which is often written for commercial success, folk music is usually created for personal expression and community celebration.
One of the most famous examples of folk music is Polish folk music. At one time, this kind of music was looked down on by educated people. They thought it was too simple and common. However, the great composer Chopin showed the world its true value. He used Polish folk music in his own works, making it an important characteristic of his music. Thanks to him, Polish folk music became respected and admired around the world.
Folk music is also important because it helps people connect with their roots. When people hear the folk songs of their homeland, they feel a sense of belonging and pride. This is especially true for people who live far from home. Folk music keeps their culture alive.
In many countries, folk music continues to inspire new generations of musicians. Modern artists often mix folk music with pop or rock music, creating exciting new styles. This shows that folk music is not just something from the past—it is alive and growing.

A.Music written for commercial success. B.Traditional music of a community or country.
C.Music played by famous musicians. D.Music that is always fast and lively.

A.Because it was too expensive. B.Because it was thought to be too simple and common.
C.Because it was not well-known. D.Because it was difficult to play.
3. What role did Chopin play in the history of Polish folk music?
A.He created it. B.He helped people value it more.
C.He ignored it. D.He replaced it with classical music.
4. What does the underlined word “roots” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Musical instruments. B.Food and clothing.
C.Family and cultural origins. D.Famous singers.
5. What does the author think about the future of folk music?
A.It will disappear soon. B.It will continue to inspire new generations.
C.It will be replaced by pop music. D.It will only be listened to by old people.
Passage 7
How Music Makes a Difference
Music is more than just sound. It is a powerful force that can change the way we feel and think. Many people turn to music when they are happy, sad, or stressed. Music can help us relax, inspire us, and even heal us.
Some people are drawn to music that tells a story. They enjoy songs that have meaningful lyrics and emotional melodies. Others prefer music that is fast and energetic. They love music that makes them want to dance or move. For many people, music is a way to express themselves when words are not enough.
One example of music’s power is the story of Chris. Chris is a shy boy who finds it difficult to talk to others. However, he is able to communicate through his piano playing. When he plays, he feels confident and happy. The music that he plays touches the hearts of the people who listen to it.
Music also brings people together. At concerts, thousands of people who have different backgrounds come together to enjoy the same music. It creates a sense of community and belonging that is hard to find elsewhere.
In conclusion, music is a gift that we should all treasure. It has the power to heal, connect, and inspire.

Passage 8
Music is everywhere in our daily life. Different rhythms influence our moods in different ways. Slow, soft music such as folk songs and light piano pieces can make us relaxed when we feel tired or worried. Fast rock and pop music can lift our spirits when we feel upset.
A music teacher called Ms. Li did a small study in her school. She divided 120 students into three groups. Group 1 listened to soft Chinese folk music before exams; Group 2 listened to loud pop music; Group 3 had no music at all.
The result was surprising. Most students in Group 1 said they felt calm and clear-minded during tests. Their scores were 8-10 points higher on average. Students in Group 2 felt excited but nervous. They found it hard to focus on their paper. Group 3 felt common stress without any special change.
Ms. Li explained the reason. Slow traditional music has gentle, steady rhythms. It slows down our heartbeat and clears our busy minds. Quick pop beats make our brains too active, so it’s hard to pay attention to difficult problems.
This study gives us a useful tip. If you have heavy schoolwork or important exams, try to spend ten minutes listening to quiet folk music. It will help you feel peaceful and perform better. Besides, music with beautiful traditional rhythms also lets us know more about our own culture while relaxing ourselves.
1. What kind of music helps people relax according to Paragraph 1?
A.Loud rock music. B.Soft slow folk music.
C.Fast pop songs. D.Rap music with strong beats.
2. How many students took part in Ms. Li’s study?
A.8. B.10. C.120. D.3.
3. Why did Group 1 get higher exam scores?
A.Folk music made them calm and focused. B.They studied harder than other groups.
C.The music gave them exam answers. D.They liked all kinds of loud music.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fast pop music helps students get high marks.
B.Music rhythm influences people’s feelings.
C.No music is the best choice before exams.
D.Folk music is only popular with old people.
5. Where can we most probably read this text?
A.A school education magazine. B.A travel guidebook.
C.A sports newspaper. D.A cooking book.
Passage 9
Most people enjoy listening to music. But when you ask your classmates what they like listening to, you are likely to get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical tastes? Do you know about the reasons? What do these differences say about us?
Researchers set out to answer these questions. They surveyed 350,000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they detected some connections between musical tastes and personality. Outgoing people preferred music with a fast rhythm (节奏), such as rap. Country music lovers were shown to be more responsible. The researchers guessed worried people might like either sad music or rhythmic music. But it turned out that these people liked neither. Instead, they preferred loud and powerful music.
The researchers also said that climate might influence people’s musical tastes and personality. People in warmer climate preferred rhythmic music. They were more outgoing. This might be a result of longer daylight hours and warmer evenings. They encouraged people to join in social activities.
Of course, we might not divide people simply by their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people from different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by languages and cultures,” said Dr. David Greenberg, “But if an outgoing person in one part of the world likes the same music as outgoing people elsewhere, then we can say that music is really like a powerful bridge.”
1. How does the writer develop Paragraph 1?
A.By asking questions. B.By listing numbers.
C.By giving examples. D.By telling the truth.
2. What does the underlined word “they” refer to?
A.The researchers. B.Outgoing people.
C.Worried people. D.Music lovers.
3. Who might be interested in loud music?
A.A lively basketball player from South Africa.
B.An outgoing businessman from Switzerland.
C.A worried mother from North China.
D.A patient clerk from Colombia.
4. Why can music be considered as a powerful bridge for all people?
A.Because people from different countries build a bridge to music.
B.Because people from different cultures have different tastes of music.
C.Because people with different personality prefer the same taste of music.
D.Because music is a good way of communication between people with similar personality.
5. What is this passage mainly about?
A.The ways to be an outgoing person. B.A study about different kinds of music.
C.A survey about how to show your feelings. D.The musical tastes between different people.
Passage 10
When I was a teenager, my parents were never interested in the music I preferred. They said to me, “David, the music you like listening to is a lot of noise.” At the same time, my father described the music that he liked as beautiful. As it turns out, they are not alone. As I grow older, I’ve often heard people of my age say, “Today’s music is terrible.” Many older people just don’t like new music. But why is that?
The mere exposure effect (纯粹接触效应) may explain this. It means the more familiar we are with something, the more likely we are to prefer it. When we are in our early teens, we usually spend a lot of time listening to popular music and discussing it with our friends. The new songs and singers during this time become familiar to us. After we turn 30 years old, we are busy working and raising our families. We don’t have so much time to look for new music. Instead, we prefer to listen to our old favourites. According to studies, by the time we turn 33 years old, most of us will completely stop exploring new music.
But I think there is another reason for older people’s dislike of new music. Most new music, after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people. Some types of music began as a rebellion by young people against out-of-date ways of doing things. These types include punk, rap, hip-hop, heavy metal and more. They naturally interest younger listeners.
Do your parents dislike the music you like too? Now, after reading this article, you know there is nothing wrong with that.
1. Which of the following charts correctly shows “the mere exposure effect”? (Preference: 偏爱,Level of familiarity: 熟悉度)
A. B. C. D.
2. Why do many older people dislike new music?
①Because the new music sounds terrible.
②Because they are afraid of noise.
③Because most new music is not written for them.
④Because they are not familiar with the new music.
A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.②④
3. Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “rebellion” in Paragraph 3?
A.Purpose. B.Sense. C.Praise. D.Disagreement.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.New music will become more popular with older people.
B.Older people will try to listen to different kinds of new music.
C.People will know it’s normal that older people dislike new music.
D.More beautiful and simple songs will be written for older people.
5. What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Why don’t Your Parents Like the Music You Like?
B.What's the Real Meaning of the Mere Exposure Effect?
C.When do Most Young People Stop Exploring New Music?
D.How do Young People Like Different Types of New Music?
Passage 11
Feel the rhythm: Traditional Chinese folk music has a history of thousands of years. It carries our culture, stories and feelings. Unlike Western music which mainly uses pianos and violins, Chinese folk music has special instruments such as erhu, pipa, guzheng and dizi. Each instrument creates its own special sound and mood.
The erhu is often called the Chinese violin. It only has two strings, but it can produce sounds full of sadness and warmth. Erquan Yingyue, the famous erhu work by Abing, is a perfect example. When you listen to it, you can feel the musician’s hard life and his deep love for the world around him. This piece of music is played in many international concerts every year and highly praised by foreign music experts.
The guzheng has a brighter, softer sound. It is usually used to play beautiful songs about mountains, rivers and spring scenes. Many old poems were written to match guzheng music. In ancient times, guzheng was popular among ladies from rich families. Today, many children learn to play guzheng as a hobby.
However, traditional folk music faces some challenges now. Lots of teenagers are crazy about foreign pop, rap and rock. They think old folk music sounds slow and boring. To change this situation, modern musicians are making new changes. They mix traditional instrumental sounds with modern pop beats. This new style of music quickly wins young people’s hearts.

Passage 3
阅读下列材料,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

Passage 5
阅读下面短文,从各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Passage 6
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

Li’s study?

【答案】1. A 2. C 3. C 4. D 5. D

5. 全文围绕“不同人的音乐品味及其与性格的关系”展开,选项D正确。A“成为外向者的方法”;B“关于不同种类音乐的研究”;C“关于如何表达感受的调查”,均不准确。
【答案】1. A 2. C 3. D 4. C 5. A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要探讨了为何父母不喜欢孩子的音乐:熟悉度效应(年少常听,年长不追新)及新音乐专为年轻人创作。
【详解】1. 文章第二段提到“The mere exposure effect (纯粹接触效应) may explain this. It means the more familiar we are with something, the more likely we are to prefer it.”,“纯粹接触效应”是指:熟悉度越高,偏好度越高,所以正确的图表应该是:横轴为“熟悉度”,纵轴为“偏好”,两者呈正相关(上升曲线)。选项A的图示符合。
2. 第三段明确写道“Most new music, after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people.”,大多数新音乐不是为他们写的,是为年轻人创作的。第二段提到“ According to studies, by the time we turn 33 years old, most of us will completely stop exploring new music.”,年轻人到33岁后不再探索新音乐,所以对新音乐不熟悉,而“纯粹接触效应”表明人们偏好熟悉的事物。③④符合。
3. 原文第三段提到“Some types of music began as a rebellion by young people against out-of-date ways of doing things.”,某些音乐类型起初是年轻人对过时做事方式的一种“反抗/叛逆”,rebellion意为“反抗/叛逆”,与disagreement(不认同/反对)意思最接近。
4. 最后一段提到“Do your parents dislike the music you like too? Now, after reading this article, you know there is nothing wrong with that.”,读完这篇文章后,你会明白父母不喜欢你的音乐是很正常的,没什么问题。选项C“人们会知道老年人不喜欢新音乐是正常的”与原文完全吻合。

Chopin: A Great Inspiration
When the great composer Robert Schumann first heard a work which was written by young Chopin, he said, “Hats off, gentlemen! A genius!”
Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849) is considered one of the greatest musicians in history. During his short lifetime, he was celebrated as one of the world’s greatest pianists, even though he only gave around 30 concerts. He was also a gifted composer who left behind more than 200 musical works.
Chopin was born in a village in Poland. He didn’t attend music school until he was 16, but soon outdid his teachers. His parents sent him to Vienna in 1829 to widen his musical experience. By 1832, he had made his way to Paris, the city that he would call home for the rest of his life.
Chopin was not only a great pianist, but also a respected piano teacher. He often told his students, “Put all your soul into it! Play the way you feel!” This is advice that is still followed by musicians today.

We are our own people!” Chopin’s music encouraged his people and helped them keep going through years of difficulty. Today, the Polish people proudly think of Poland as the country of Chopin.
When Chopin died from ill health at 39, thousands of people travelled from faraway countries to attend his funeral. Today, people around the world still listen to his moving and often sad music.
