Passage 2
Three students are sharing their favourite words.
“A good seed needs a healthy body, positive spirit and kind heart to grow strong and bear fruits. ”
I learned this deeply from Yuan Longping’s life. Yuan Longping lived a simple life, cared about hungry people and devoted all his energy to feeding the world. He never cared about fame or money, but rooted himself in the land to do meaningful things. This saying helps me shape good qualities and live a valuable life. (Fu Xing)
“Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.”
The brave female scientist Marie Curie stuck to her research for years under terrible conditions. She was not afraid of unknown radioactive materials. Instead, she chose to study and understand them little by little, finally winning two Nobel Prizes. She believed fear only comes from ignorance (无知). This saying reminds me to face difficulties bravely instead of running away from troubles. (Lucy)
“The important thing is to never stop questioning.”
This saying has encouraged lots of young learners. The great scientist Albert Einstein kept asking questions all his life. He never accepted facts without thinking deeply. His endless curiosity helped him make world-famous achievements in physics. Einstein’s story tells us curiosity is the key to discovery. This saying teaches us to think actively and dare to ask “why” in study and life. (Chen Hao)

Passage 5
We all have those moments when bright ideas hit us, but not everyone can develop such moments into the fruits of creative thinking. While we believe creative thinking is the falling apple of Isaac Newton, who was born in 1643, we seldom notice that creative thinking is in fact a process.
Let’s look at what happened in 1666. Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon circling the earth. Newton believed it did. He called it “gravity”.
This story has become one of the most popular examples of “eureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, the whole process of creative thinking shouldn’t be forgotten. Newton studied mathematics for a long time to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems.
Newton began to examine “gravity” carefully. He experimented, studied the results, and used what he learned to design new experiments. This process of inquiry (调查) , which began with the falling apple, lasted for many years until he finally published (发表) his groundbreaking work in 1687.
The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our life. In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. Once the moment comes, we catch it and then keep on working in the years to come. It takes a lot to get the fruits of creative thinking, but the sweetest fruits will be ready for those who wait the longest.
1. How long did Newton continue to study gravity after the apple fell?
A.For 44 years B.For 33 years C.For 23 years D.For 21 years

A.The moon. B.The earth. C.The force. D.The apple.
3. The underlined word “eureka” in paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A.I’ve got it B.I give up C.I have no idea D.I believe it
4. What can we learn from Newton’s story?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Rome wasn’t built in a day.
C.The early bird catches the worm. D.Action speaks louder than words.
5. What is the best title for the text?
A.Tips on Becoming a Scientist B.Creative Thinking: A Long Road

She loved biology and hoped to join the school biology competition, but she failed the school selection twice in a row. After the second failure, she locked herself in the room and refused to read biology textbooks any more.
Her biology teacher found her sadness and had a long talk with her. “All inspiring people you admire have failed many times before their success. Failure is not the end of your dream. Passage 10
When we talk about inspiring people, different teenagers have different ideas. Some only admire pop stars or sports players for their fame and bright public performances. However, if we look deeper, we will find that every person who is worth admiring shares the same shining qualities: courage, devotion and perseverance.
It is true that many famous stars look perfect on TV or online. But most teenagers pay no attention to the hard days behind their success. Before getting public praise, they practiced thousands of times, faced countless doubts and overcame plenty of difficulties. No bright achievement can come easily to anyone.
What’s more, inspiring people do not only mean world-famous pioneers or super stars. Ordinary people around us can also light up our life and become our role models. A headteacher who stays late to help slow students, a community doctor who works hard on holidays, a volunteer who spends free time helping the old—all of them carry valuable spirit that we should learn from.
Looking up to inspiring people is meaningful for middle school students. Their life stories teach us two important lessons. First, never be afraid of difficulties and temporary failures. Second, keep a lasting wish to improve ourselves every day.
If we take these two lessons into our daily study and life, we will gradually become stronger and more responsible. One day, we may also become an inspiring person for people around us.

Passage 12
People in our village made a living by planting fruit trees when I was very young. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the nearby hill. At that time, people had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill. Even though they worked hard, the fruit production (产量) was still low because of the water shortage.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (水渠) and other projects began to be built in our village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.

A.For 44 years B.For 33 years C.For 23 years D.For 21 years
2. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?

C.Newton’s Apple: A Lucky Moment D.The Importance of Patience in Science

Passage 9
Two years ago, Li Man was a girl who easily lost heart when meeting difficulties.
It is a chance for you to find your weak points and make progress,” the teacher told her softly. These words deeply inspired Li Man.
From that day on, Li made big changes to her study habits. She prepared a mistake notebook to record every wrong exercise. After each class, she stayed behind to ask the teacher for unclear knowledge points. When she met hard biology theories, she drew mind maps to remember them instead of feeling upset.
Months of steady effort brought good results. Last spring, she took part in the city middle school biology competition and won the second prize. Standing on the award stage, Li thought of the two failures she had experienced.
Now Li often shares her experience with her classmates. She tells them that the inspiring people around us are not those who never make mistakes. They are people who hold enough courage to start again after every fall.

The river was so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that the water conservation project (水利工程) helped the villagers increase (增加) their fruit production with clean water in the river.
