How to Boost Your Memory
Do you often forget where you put your keys? Or walk into a room and forget 13 you went there for? If so, don't worry — you are not alone. Many people have memory problems 14 time to time.
Scientists have found that there are two main 15 of memory. Short-term memory helps you hold information for a short time, like a phone number you just looked up. Long-term memory stores(存储)information for days or even years.
So how can we move what we learn into long-term memory? Here are some useful tips. First, pay 16 to details. When you study something, try taking notes by writing down key points. It is much easier to remember a summary than every single word. Second, 17 it or lose it. The more you review, the more likely you will remember. Third, make 18 of your senses. Create images, tables, and mind maps to organize information. Scientists have found 19 our brain organizes memories while we sleep, so getting enough sleep is also very important.
Last but not least, find the methods 20 work best for you. There is no one-size-fits-all way to improve memory. Try different techniques and see which ones help you the most.
13. A. what B. why C. where D. how
14. A. at B. in C. from D. with
15. A. parts B. kinds C. types D. groups
16. A. interest B. money C. attention D. care
17. A. make B. keep C. use D. leave
18. A. use B. fun C. sure D. sense
19. A. that B. what C. how D. where
20. A. what B. that C. how D. whether
13.A 14.C 15.B 16.C 17.C 18.A 19.A 20.B
B项why问原因(不需for),C项where问地点,D项how问方式。故选A。
from time to time意为"不时、偶尔"。A项at time to time搭配错误。故选C。
根据教材"two main kinds of memory",选kinds。
Use it or lose it"是教材原文——"使用它,否则就会失去它"。
make use of(利用)是教材核心短语"make use of your senses"。B项make fun of(取笑)不合语境。故选A。
故选A。
A
A. Linking New to Old
Connect(连接)new information with what you already know. Knowledge is like a chain(链条)— new knowledge is best remembered by linking it with old knowledge. For example, when learning "astronaut", think of words you already know like "space" and "astronomy".
B. Using Senses
Make use of your senses to create strong memories. You can draw pictures, make mind maps, or even create a story in your mind like a film. This method is especially helpful for people who easily forget what they have just read.
C. Spaced Review
Instead of reviewing everything at once, review information at different times — after one day, one week, and one month. This helps move knowledge from short-term memory to long-term memory.
D. Paying Attention to Details
When studying similar things, pay close attention to how they are different from each other. For example, if you often mix up "quite" and "quiet", study both carefully and note their differences. This stops you from getting things mixed up.
21.______ 22.______ 23.______
21. Emma says, "I often get similar English words mixed up. For example, I can never remember whether 'affect' means 影响 or if 'effect' does. I need a way to tell them apart."
22. Jack says, "I always forget what I've learned after a few days. Even though I study hard for tests, the information just disappears. I need to find a way to keep knowledge for a longer time."
23. Lucy says, "I can remember facts, but they don't seem to connect to anything. When I learn a new topic, I don't know how to relate it to things I already know. Everything feels like separate pieces."
【答案】21.D 22.C 23.A
Lucy的困难:新知识无法与已知的关联→A选项"Linking New to Old"(新旧知识关联),教材原文"knowledge is like a chain..."。故选A。
B
Understanding Your Memory
Have you ever wondered how your memory works? Scientists have found that there are two main kinds of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory.
Short-term memory is what you use to hold small amounts of information for a very short time. For example, when someone tells you a phone number and you repeat it to yourself until you write it down, you are using your short-term memory. However, this kind of memory is limited(有限的)— it can only hold about seven pieces of information at a time, and the information disappears(消失)quickly if you don't do something with it.
Long-term memory, on the other hand, stores information for days, months, or even a lifetime(一生). When you remember your first day of school, a song you learned years ago, or how to ride a bike, you are using your long-term memory. Unlike short-term memory, long-term memory seems to have no limit(限制).
The real challenge is moving information from short-term memory to long-term memory. This process(过程)is called "consolidation". While you sleep, your brain organizes and strengthens(巩固)your memories, making them last longer. This is why getting enough sleep is so important for learning. Reviewing information regularly also helps — each time you review, you strengthen the memory path in your brain.
So the next time you forget something, don't be too hard on yourself. Memory is not perfect for anyone. But by understanding how it works, you can learn to use it better.
24. What is the main purpose(目的)of the passage?
A. To tell readers why people forget things.
B. To explain how memory works and how to use it better.
C. To compare short-term memory with long-term memory only.
D. To show why getting enough sleep is the only way to improve memory.
25. What does "consolidation" mean in the passage?
A. The process of forgetting old information.
B. The process of moving information from short-term memory to long-term memory.
C. The process of creating new information.
D. The process of teaching someone about memory.
26. Which of the following is TRUE about short-term memory?
A. It can store information for a lifetime.
B. It has no limit on how much you can remember.
C. It only holds about seven pieces of information at a time.
D. It works best when you are sleeping.
文章末段"by understanding how it works, you can learn to use it better"点明主旨。A/C/D均片面或绝对。故选B。
第四段this process指代前一句"moving information from short-term to long-term memory"。故选B。
第三段"it can only hold about seven pieces of information at a time"为短期记忆特点。
Grandma's Cookies
Last weekend, I visited my grandma. When I walked into her room, she looked at me and smiled. "Johnny, you're back! I saved your favourite cookies for you."
I was a little surprised(惊讶的). My name is Rick, not Johnny — Johnny is my dad's name. "Grandma, it's me, Rick," I said gently. She thought for a moment and then her face lit up. "Oh, Rick! Of course! But don't eat the cookies — I'm saving them for my grandson."
I didn't know what to say. I am her grandson, Rick. But I simply smiled and said, "OK, Grandma. I won't touch them."
Later, my parents told me that we are taking Grandma to see a doctor. They explained that her memory has been getting worse(变差)as she gets older. I felt sad, but I also remembered the good times we had. Grandma used to take me to the park and fly kites with me. She taught me how to bake(烘焙)cookies. These are sweet memories I will never forget.
My friend Fu Xing told me something that comforted me: "Instead of what she forgets, keep in mind what she remembers. Your grandma still remembers that you love cookies!"
She was right. Grandma may forget my name sometimes, but she has not forgotten her love for me. And I know I will never forget that love either.
27. Who is Johnny?
A. The writer's brother. B. The writer's uncle.
C. The writer's father. D. The writer's cousin.
28. How did the writer feel when Grandma called him Johnny?
A. Happy. B. Angry. C. Surprised. D. Excited.
29. What can we learn from Fu Xing's advice?
A. We should feel sad about what old people forget.
B. We should focus on what people remember instead of what they forget.
C. We should tell old people that they are wrong when they forget things.
D. We should stop visiting old people when they forget our names.
Johnny is my dad's name"直接给出答案。故选C。
I was a little surprised"表达作者情绪。故选C。
A/C/D均相反。故选B。
D
Why Is Riding a Bike Not Easy to Forget?
Have you ever noticed that once you learn to ride a bike, you never really forget how to do it? Even if you haven't ridden one for years, your body still remembers. Why is that?
Scientists explain that there are different kinds of long-term memory. One important type is called "procedural(程序性的)memory" — the memory of how to do things. This includes skills like riding a bike, swimming, or playing a musical instrument(乐器). Procedural memory is stored in a more stable(稳定的)area of the brain, which means it is less likely to disappear.
Another type is "declarative memory" — the memory of facts and events. This includes remembering what you ate for breakfast yesterday, where you went last weekend, or the year World War Ⅱ ended. Declarative memory is easier to lose, which is why we often forget facts but rarely forget skills.
How can we use this knowledge to improve our learning? First, turn facts into actions(行动). For example, instead of just reading about a science experiment(实验), try doing it yourself. The hands-on experience helps create a procedural-like memory that lasts longer. Second, repeat the skill regularly. Even for procedural memory, "use it or lose it" still applies — the more you practise, the stronger the memory becomes.
So next time you wonder why you can still ride a bike but can't remember what you learned in history class last month, you know the answer: your brain stores different kinds of memory in different ways.
30. What is procedural memory?
A. The memory of facts and events.
B. The memory of how to do things.
C. The memory of what people said.
D. The memory of numbers only.
31. Why is riding a bike not easy to forget?
A. Because we ride a bike every day.
B. Because procedural memory is stored in a more stable area of the brain.
C. Because bikes are very simple to understand.
D. Because everyone has a very good memory for bikes.
32. What does the writer suggest to improve learning?
A. Read about experiments instead of doing them.
B. Turn facts into actions and repeat skills regularly.
C. Only study facts and events.
D. Try to forget old skills to make room for new ones.
33. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Ride a Bike
B. How Our Brain Stores Different Kinds of Memory
C. Riding a Bike Is the Most Important Skill
D. Why Facts Are Hard to Remember
第二段"procedural memory — the memory of how to do things"直接定义。故选B。
第二段"stored in a more stable area...less likely to disappear"解释了原因。故选B。
第四段"turn facts into actions"和"repeat the skill regularly"。故选B。
The Fox and the Grapevine
One morning, Mother Fox told Baby Fox that she was going to pick some grapes for him. Then she ran out, and he waited.
After a long time, Baby Fox heard a familiar cry nearby: "Danger! Run!" It was his mother! He also heard gunshots(枪声)! Poor, scared Baby Fox quickly ran away. He wondered what happened to his mother, but he was too afraid to look back.
Many years later, the grown-up fox returned home. He felt sad when he recalled(回忆)what happened that day. Then he saw a grapevine(葡萄藤)nearby. "That's strange," said Fox. "I wonder how it grows here." He tasted a grape — "So sweet!" It reminded him of his mother.
Suddenly, tears(泪水)filled his eyes. He realized where the grapevine came from. When Mother Fox was on her way home with grapes in her mouth, she shouted out to warn her baby of danger. This was why she dropped the grapes. The grapes took root(生根)and grew into this beautiful grapevine.
Fox sat under the grapevine for a long time. He finally understood that even though his mother was gone, her love had grown into something that would last forever.
34. Why did Mother Fox shout "Danger! Run!"?

One of my most precious memories is about my grandfather. When I was ten, he taught me how to fly a kite in the park. I remember how excited I was when the kite first flew into the sky. My grandfather smiled and said, "See? You can do anything if you try your best."
This memory is precious because my grandfather passed away(去世)two years ago. But whenever I feel sad or face difficulties, I think of that day and his words. It gives me strength(力量)and reminds me that I am loved.
From this memory, I have learned that the most valuable things in life are not expensive gifts but simple moments with people we love. I believe that happy memories stay with us forever and help us become better people.

Dear Wang Tao,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble remembering English words. I understand how you feel, because I used to have the same problem.
Here are some tips that may help you. First, don't try to memorize words by simply reading them again and again. Instead, link new words with things you already know. For example, when you learn the word "astronaut", connect it with words like "space" and "astronomy". This way, your brain can store the new information better.
Second, make use of your senses. Draw pictures for words, create mind maps, or even make up a story with the new words you are learning. I have found that using senses makes it easier to move information from short-term memory to long-term memory.
I believe that if you try these methods, your memory will surely improve. Don't give up — finding the right way takes time!
Yours,
Li Hua

A
C

34.Because she wanted to warn Baby Fox of danger.
35.He wondered how the grapevine grew there.
36.It came from the grapes that Mother Fox dropped when she shouted to warn Baby Fox.
The grapevine means his mother's love — even though she is gone, her love has grown into something lasting. I believe happy memories help us in two ways. First, they give us strength(力量)when we face difficulties. Second, happy memories connect us with people we care about, even when they are not with us.
38.
One of my most precious memories is about my grandfather. When I was ten, he taught me how to fly a kite in the park. I remember how excited I was when the kite first flew into the sky. My grandfather smiled and said, "See? You can do anything if you try."
Yours,
Li Hua
