Wild Places for Outdoor Adventures in CanadaBest for geological wonders: Gros Morne
Despite being home to landscapes so breathtaking, Newfoundland and Labrador remains one of Canada’s most overlooked provinces. Taking pride of place on its west coast is UNESCO-listed Gros Morne National Park. The park’s calling card is an ancient treasure — the Tablelands, a plateau pushed up by tectonic (地壳的) plate shifts and one of only a few places in the world you can walk on the earth’s mantle (地幔).Best for soft adventure: Thousand Islands
One of Canada’s smallest national parks, Ontario’s Thousand Islands is located in a region of the same name, and made up of 21 islands and numerous smaller islands in the St. Lawrence River. Formed from the worn-down peaks of ancient mountains, much of it is open for camping — a popular, family-friendly option here.Best for a national park pilgrimage: Banff
Canada’s first national park, Banff sits in the palm of the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains and has drawn travellers to its natural hot springs since it first opened in 1885. Those mineral baths also inspired the construction of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a 135-year-old, Scottish baronial-style castle. The action here centres around the skiing town of Banff, but the mountains are home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears.Best for wildlife: Jasper
Banff’s northern, lesser-visited neighbour, Jasper, is double its size and the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. A hiker’s region of wild peaks, it’s hard not to bump into wildlife here. Elk, bighorn sheep, and wolves are abundant. Time your visit for spring or autumn when wildlife-watching is at its peak. Non-hikers can enjoy cable-rides for valley views and star-gazing at night — Jasper is the second-largest Dark Sky Preserve, in the world.
What makes Gros Morne National Park attractive geologically?
A.The availability of camping. B.The Tablelands, an ancient plateau.
C.The presence of natural hot springs. D.Its location in Newfoundland and Labrador.
22.Where can you find a family-friendly camping option in Ontario?
A.In Banff National Park. B.In Jasper National Park.
C.In Thousand Islands Park. D.In Gros Morne National Park.
23.What do Banff and Jasper have in common?
A.Their hot season is spring. B.Their hot springs attract tourists.
C.They have a history of over 100 years. D.A wide range of wildlife can be found there.
(本题10分)US national parks aren’t dogfriendly; while we knew this was the case for some parks, we had heard it varied from park to park. My husband, Mitchell, and I are always on the lookout for dogfriendly options at each national park. We have been to quite a few national parks now and in general, the rule is that dogs must always be on a leash (用狗绳拴住) and stay on paved (铺好的) path areas, no hiking trails (小径).
Yosemite was probably one of the more dogfriendly national parks we’ve been to as there was a longer paved bike trail in addition to a few shorter paved pathways that were dogfriendly. However, the hiking trails were still a nogo. For this reason, we haven’t spent as much time in Yosemite National Park and instead have enjoyed the state parks and national forest that surrounds them.
Dogfriendliness aside, we have not for a second regretted visiting a national park and Yosemite was no exception. You must visit Yosemite if you ever get the chance. There were truly beautiful mountains and even though Mitchell and I grew up in the shadow of (在……附近) the Rockies we were completely impressed by this new landscape. We were fortunate to visit in the fall which had the added benefit of the beautiful colors and fewer people! The landscape easily looked like it could be a painting.
After Yosemite, we had originally planned to make our way to Death Valley. After some discussion, we decided to take a little detour (绕道) and visit Lake Tahoe. The lake was beautiful and there seemed to be signs everywhere for ski hills and endless outdoor activities. We ended up staying for two days at the Zephyr Cove RV Park and Resort. We were able to wash clothes on site, shower and even use their WiFi to catch up on work. We had ended up traveling farther than we planned each day and it was nice to recharge and stay in one place a little longer. We've come to the conclusion we’re still working on slowing down.
What is the rule for dogs in US national parks?
A.They are allowed on all trails in dogfriendly parks.
B.They are allowed on hiking areas in certain parks.
C.They are permitted to be offleash.
D.They are limited to paved areas.
Why did the couple stay in Yosemite National Park for a short time?
A.They preferred state parks.
B.They had been there many times.
C.They wanted to hike with their dog.
D.They needed to travel farther than planned.
Why does the author mention the Rockies?
A.To stress the beauty of Yosemite.
B.To express her desire to visit the Rockies.
C.To describe the breathtaking landscape of her hometown.
D.To show the differences between the Rockies and Yosemite.
What can be inferred about the couple from the last paragraph?
A.They felt relaxed after slowing down.
B.They didn’t reach their intended destination.
C.They visited Lake Tahoe simply out of convenience.
D.They didn’t enjoy traveling because of their work stress.
(本题10分)Every Saturday morning, at 9 am, more than 50, 000 runners set off to run 5km around their local park. The Parkrun phenomenon began with a dozen friends and has inspired 400 events in the UK and more abroad. The events are free, staffed by thousands of volunteers. Runners range from four years old to grandparents; their times range from Andrew Baddeley’s world record of 13 minutes 48 seconds up to an hour.
Parkrun is succeeding where London’s Olympic “legacy (传承)” is failing. Ten years ago on Monday, it was announced that the Games of the 30th Olympics would be to inspire a nation of sport lovers away from their couches (沙发). The population would be fitter, healthier and produce more winners. It has not happened. Officials are still wondering why London Olympics failed to “inspire a generation”. The success of Parkrun offers answers.
Parkrun is not a race but a time trial: Your only competitor is the clock. This kind of sport welcomes anybody. Both new runners and champion runners can have a lot of fun. The Olympic Games, by contrast, wanted to produce more elite athletes. The stress on success kept newcomers from taking part.
In fact, state involvement in planning community sports associations is a bit overdone. If there is a role for government, it should really be getting involved in providing common goods — making sure there is space for playing fields and the money to build tennis and netball courts, and encouraging all these activities in schools. But all the while governments have been busy with selling green spaces, taking money from local authorities and declining attention on sports in education. Instead of wordy, worthy strategies, future governments need to do more to provide the conditions for sports to develop, or at least not make them worse.
What does the author want to show about Parkrun in the first paragraph?
A.Its history. B.Its difficulty. C.Its popularity. D.Its development.
What can we infer about the Games of the 30th Olympics?
A.It promoted national sport participation.
B.It didn’t bring citizens the expected benefits.
C.It helped popularize the Parkrun movement.
D.Its organizers found the answer to the failure in the Games.
What does the underlined word “elite” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Intelligent. B.Brave. C.Excellent. D.Healthy.
What should governments do about sports according to the author?
A.Sell or take up green spaces.
B.Pay less attention to sports in education.
C.Organize community sports associations.
D.Provide the right conditions for sports to develop.
(本题10分)Are you a fan of spending your lunch breaks in an urban (城市的) park? Or do you walk your dog around it each morning and evening? Well, we have good news: spending just 20 minutes in a park every day will make you happier and less stressed — whether or not you’re exercising while you’re there.
Two new studies have shown the benefits of spending time in parks. The latest, from the University of Michigan, suggests spending at least 20 minutes walking or sitting in a place where you’re in contact with nature greatly lowers stress levels. Lead researcher MaryCarol Hunter said, “You don’t have to travel to the wild lands. Getting out of an office building and sitting next to a tree can be enough.”
In a separate study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers found people who visited their local urban parks felt happier. “Overall, we found park visitors reported an improvement in emotional (情绪的) well-being after the park visit,” said lead researcher Hon Yuen. “We did not find that levels of physical activity were related to improved emotional well-being. Instead, we found that time spent in the park was related to improved emotional well-being.”
The results are perhaps unsurprising — many studies have highlighted the benefits of nature on a person’s emotional health. A review of nature treatments for emotional health care found that nature-based activities contributed to a reduction in levels of anxiety and stress.
Meanwhile, a separate study by King’s College London researchers found being outdoors, seeing trees, hearing birdsong, looking at the sky, and feeling in contact with nature were connected with higher levels of emotional well-being. In some cases, these benefits influence people positively for up to seven hours afterwards.
All of these studies show the need to design greener cities for the future and protect our parks.
What does MaryCarol Hunter mean in paragraph 2?
A.Wild lands are disappearing rapidly. B.Urban nature can be beneficial enough.
C.Traveling in wild lands can be dangerous. D.Office buildings are the main cause of stress.
What is the key finding of the University of Alabama study?
A.Larger park areas lead to greater happiness.
B.Physical activity is key to emotional health.
C.Park visits help improve emotional happiness.
D.Dog walking is preferred among park activities.
What is the author’s attitude towards nature’s lasting effects?
A.Doubtful. B.Unfavorable. C.Positive. D.Uninterested.
What is the best title for the text?
A.The History of Urban Park Design B.Exercise Matters: A Guide to Health
C.Scientists’ Advice on Stress Reduction D.New Studies: Why Parks Make You Happier
(本题12.5分)Many people enjoy spending their vacations swimming, lying in the sun and staying at luxurious hotels. 36(2.5分) They head for the country, to one of the numerous United States national parks, and take advantage of the fresh air and many outdoor activities that nature has to offer.

Camping out does have its disadvantages, however. 39(2.5分) Even after the weather clears up, there’s still lots of mud to deal with. The weather can be quite cold at night, and there are always many mosquitoes (蚊子).
Park rangers (护林员) recommend that visitors watch out for snakes, whose bites can be poisonous. They stress the fact that it is necessary that food be kept packed away, so that an unexpected bear doesn’t pay an unwelcome visit to some surprised guests. 40(2.5分) “It might be nice to sit by a swimming pool and sip (小口抿) a drink,” says Tanya Rodriguez, a nature lover, “but nature is really so beautiful, and I’ve met such interesting people here. Nothing compares to a vacation like this!”
A.If it rains, there is not much to do.
B.Camping is not really my cup of tea.
C.But every once in a while I like to get back to nature.

Charlie was a rich boy who had more toys than you could imagine. His family had a lot of money, and whenever he liked something, they would buy it for him. In reality, then, he had no idea what things cost, and wouldn’t bother to take care of what he had. Nor did he realize how difficult it was for other children to get toys like the ones he had.
A time came, though, when he was so used to all his toys that he began to want something different. One of his uncles found a fine horse and he gave it to Charlie, as something unusual. Charlie was very excited at having a horse. He learned to ride, and was constantly on his horse, going here and there. However, he treated the horse just as badly as he treated all his other toys, and it soon started looking sick. For the first time in his life Charlie became truly worried. He loved the horse, and the fact that his family had offered to buy him a new one meant nothing to him.
One day, while in the countryside, he saw a little girl with a horse. The girl looked very poor, but the horse seemed happy and looked great. Wondering how she had managed this, Charlie secretly followed them, watching everything they did. First he followed them through the forest, where he saw that she never used the stick and never hit the horse. This was the opposite of what Charlie had done to his horse. Then they came to the stable (马厩), and as soon as they arrived the girl fed and watered the horse. Then she carefully cleaned it. Charlie was surprised. He’d never done any of those things for his horse. He saw that the girl spent a lot of time giving care and attention to her horse, and that she did it all on her own. This had never entered Charlie’s mind; he had always been too busy playing and having fun to look after the horse.Paragraph 1:
Charlie wanted to change and become like the girl.

Paragraph 2:
As a result, Charlie gave up constantly asking for new toys.

W: Oh, we go to the movies too much. Can’t we do something different for a change, honey?
M: Well, do you have any suggestions?
W: Let me see. How do you feel about asking some friends over to play cards?
M: It’s okay with me. We don’t have some beer or anything to eat at home.
W: Well, let’s call Juliet and ask her and her neighbor David to come over. I’ll go to the store and buy some food and drinks.
M: Okay, that’s a good idea.

M: Central Park is one of the most famous urban parks in the world, yet it is only the 5th biggest park in New York City at 843 acres. The largest is Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx area of the city. The second largest is Greenbelt Park, which is found on Staten Island. However, neither enjoys the history of Central Park, which is in the center of Manhattan. It is the most visited urban park in the US and the most filmed location in the world. Planning for the park began back in the 1840s. However, the plans were not accepted until 1853, and work did not begin until 1857. Additional land was bought at the northern end in 1859. But the park was not fully complete until 1876, almost 30 years after it was thought up. The park is now home to Central Park Zoo, the Delacorte Theater and the Literary Walk, which is made up of statues of famous writers.
Wild Places for Outdoor Adventures in Canada
Best for geological wonders: Gros Morne
Despite being home to landscapes so breathtaking, Newfoundland and Labrador remains one of Canada’s most overlooked provinces. Taking pride of place on its west coast is UNESCO-listed Gros Morne National Park. The park’s calling card is an ancient treasure — the Tablelands, a plateau pushed up by tectonic (地壳的) plate shifts and one of only a few places in the world you can walk on the earth’s mantle (地幔).
Best for soft adventure: Thousand Islands
One of Canada’s smallest national parks, Ontario’s Thousand Islands is located in a region of the same name, and made up of 21 islands and numerous smaller islands in the St. Lawrence River. Formed from the worn-down peaks of ancient mountains, much of it is open for camping — a popular, family-friendly option here.
Best for a national park pilgrimage: Banff
Canada’s first national park, Banff sits in the palm of the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains and has drawn travellers to its natural hot springs since it first opened in 1885. Those mineral baths also inspired the construction of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a 135-year-old, Scottish baronial-style castle. The action here centres around the skiing town of Banff, but the mountains are home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears.
Best for wildlife: Jasper
根据Best for geological wonders: Gros Morne部分中“The park’s calling card is an ancient treasure — the Tablelands, a plateau pushed up by tectonic (地壳的) plate shifts and one of only a few places in the world you can walk on the earth’s mantle (地幔).(这个公园的名片是一处古老的宝藏——Tablelands,这是一个由地壳板块移动推升形成的高原,也是世界上仅有的几个可以在地球地幔上行走的地方之一。)”
根据Best for soft adventure: Thousand Islands部分中“One of Canada’s smallest national parks, Ontario’s Thousand Islands is located in a region of the same name, and made up of 21 islands and numerous smaller islands in the St. Lawrence River. Formed from the worn-down peaks of ancient mountains, much of it is open for camping — a popular, family-friendly option here.(加拿大最小的国家公园之一,安大略省的千岛湖位于同名地区,由圣劳伦斯河中的21个岛屿和众多较小的岛屿组成。它由古老山脉被侵蚀的山峰形成,这里的大部分区域都开放供露营——这是一个受欢迎的、适合家庭的选择。)”可知,在安大略省的千岛湖公园可以找到适合家庭的露营选择。故选C项。
23.细节理解题。根据Best for a national park pilgrimage: Banff部分中“The action here centres around the skiing town of Banff, but the mountains are home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears.(这里的活动以班夫滑雪小镇为中心,但这些山脉是驼鹿和灰熊等野生动物的家园。)”以及Best for wildlife: Jasper部分中“A hiker’s region of wild peaks, it’s hard not to bump into wildlife here. Elk, bighorn sheep, and wolves are abundant.(这是一个徒步旅行者的野峰地区,在这里很难不遇到野生动物。麋鹿、大角羊和狼数量众多。)”可知,在Banff和Jasper都能发现各种各样的野生动物。故选D项。
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.A
根据第一段中“We have been to quite a few national parks now and in general, the rule is that dogs must always be on a leash (用狗绳拴住) and stay on paved (铺好的) path areas, no hiking trails (小径).(我们现在已经去过不少国家公园了,总的来说,规则是狗必须总是拴着狗链,并且待在铺设好的小路上,不能走徒步路线)”可知,美国国家公园对宠物的规定是:只能在铺好的路上,不能去徒步旅行的小径,故选D。
根据第二段中“However, the hiking trails were still a nogo. For this reason, we haven’t spent as much time in Yosemite National Park and instead have enjoyed the state parks and national forest that surrounds them.(然而,徒步旅行仍然是一个禁忌。出于这个原因,我们没有在约塞米蒂国家公园花那么多时间,而是享受了周围的州立公园和国家森林)”可知,作者和丈夫没有在约塞米蒂国家公园游览很长时间是因为他们想带狗一起徒步,而约塞米蒂国家公园不允许狗进入徒步的小路,故选C。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段中“You must visit Yosemite if you ever get the chance. There were truly beautiful mountains and even though Mitchell and I grew up in the shadow of (在……附近) the Rockies we were completely impressed by this new landscape.(如果有机会,你一定要去约塞米蒂。那里有真正美丽的山脉,尽管米切尔和我是在落基山脉的阴影下长大的,但我们对这一新景观印象深刻)”可知,虽然作者和丈夫从小生活在落基山风景区附近,但是约塞米蒂国家公园的景色给他们留下了深刻的印象,因此作者提到落基山是为了强调约塞米蒂国家公园的景色很美,故选A。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We had ended up traveling farther than we planned each day and it was nice to recharge and stay in one place a little longer. We’ve come to the conclusion we’re still working on slowing down.(我们每天的行程都比计划的要远,能在一个地方多待一会儿,给自己充电感觉真好。我们得出的结论是,我们仍在努力放慢速度)”可知,作者在放慢速度后感觉很放松,故选A。
根据第一段内容,尤其是“Every Saturday morning, at 9 am, more than 50, 000 runners set off to run 5km around their local park. ”(每周六早上9点,超过5万名跑步者开始在当地公园周围跑5公里)和“Runners range from four years old to grandparents; their times range from Andrew Baddeley’s world record of 13 minutes 48 seconds up to an hour.(跑步者从四岁的孩子到祖父母;他们的用时范围从Andrew Baddeley创造的13分48秒的世界纪录到1小时不等)”可知,本段主要介绍了公园跑步的受欢迎程度。故选C。
根据第二段“Parkrun is succeeding where London’s Olympic ‘legacy (传承)’ is failing. Ten years ago on Monday, it was announced that the Games of the 30th Olympics would be to inspire a nation of sport lovers away from their couches (沙发). The population would be fitter, healthier and produce more winners. It has not happened.(Parkrun在伦敦奥运‘传承’失败的地方取得了成功。
根据最后一段“Instead of wordy, worthy strategies, future governments need to do more to provide the conditions for sports to develop, or at least not make them worse.(未来的政府需要做的不是冗长而有价值的策略,而是为体育发展提供更多的条件,或者至少不要让它们变得更糟)”可知,政府应该为体育发展提供更多的便利条件。故选D。
根据第二段MaryCarol Hunter所说的话“You don’t have to travel to the wild lands. Getting out of an office building and sitting next to a tree can be enough.(你不必前往荒野之地,只需走出办公楼,坐在一棵树旁就足够了。)”
根据第三段“In a separate study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers found people who visited their local urban parks felt happier.(阿拉巴马大学伯明翰分校的另一项研究发现,去当地城市公园游玩的人会感到更快乐。)”
根据第五段“In some cases, these benefits influence people positively for up to seven hours afterwards.(在某些情况下,这些益处能对人产生长达七小时的积极影响。)”和最后一段“All of these studies show the need to design greener cities for the future and protect our parks.(所有这些研究表明,未来需要设计更环保的城市并保护我们的公园。)”
根据第一段“Well, we have good news: spending just 20 minutes in a park every day will make you happier and less stressed — whether or not you’re exercising while you’re there.(好消息是:每天只需在公园里待上20分钟,不论是否运动,都能让你更快乐、减轻压力。)”和最后一段“All of these studies show the need to design greener cities for the future and protect our parks.(所有这些研究表明,未来需要设计更环保的城市并保护我们的公园。)”

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
As a result, Charlie gave up constantly asking for new toys.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Charlie wanted to change and become like the girl. With the girl’s help he learned how to put care and attention into things, and that if you did so you would enjoy them much more. He learned that you could be much happier with only a few special things that you truly took care of than with thousands of toys that were only good for a short time and were then thrown aside. Charlie also learned that the care put into these things was sometimes difficult, but that all the efforts would be worthwhile.Paragraph 2:
As a result, Charlie gave up constantly asking for new toys. He gave the girl many of his own toys, and more to other children in the village. He only kept those few toys he really liked. And, just as he had learned from the girl, he set himself to repair and care for those toys, so he could really enjoy playing with them.
①照顾:take care of/look after
②放弃:give up/abandon
③修理:repair/fix
