"I just wanted to get a sense of the reach of his vision,"says Fiennes from Umbria,Italy, where he's renting a farmhouse with no Wi-Fi,so he is at a local cafe, wearing a loose white shirt open at the neck in the heat. From all the conversations I have had with New Yorkers, they consider his legacy to be extremely negative. But you can't go to New York and not benefit from the West Side Highway or Riverside Park. You still use the tunnels and bridges that he built.Of course, the Cross Bronx Expressway is horrible-it's a controversial legacy. And that is very much addressed in the play." The play Straight Line Crazy revolves around two key moments in Moses's life. The first is in 1926,when viewers see him driving through his plan to open up Long Island and create Jones Beach State Park, changing the coastline from a playground for renowned families such as the Vanderbilts and the Whitneys into a recreational facility for everyone.By 1955 that idealism had soured and Moses's plan to route a highway through Washington Square was thwarted by a mass protest of local residents. determined to protect their community. When Hare's play Straight Line Crazy directed by Nicholas Hytner, opened in London in March 2022,it was a revelation: huge ideas dealt with in witty (and vivid ways. And it was an education too, introducing a largely ignorant English theater-going public to the whole idea of Moses."But in New York,"says Hare,"everyone already has a view about him." 28.Why did Ralph Fiennes take a helicopter ride over New York? A.He learned to be an urban planner. B.He inspected expressways and bridges C.He admired the city from above as a tourist. D.He drew inspiration for acting Robert Moses 29.What does the underlined word"thwarted"mean in Paragraph 3? A.Prevented. B.Adopted. C.Supported. D.Adapted. 30.What can be inferred from the text? A.New Yorkers can't get benefits from Moses's design. B.Moses's plan in 1926 was met with protests of the locals. C.Hare, the director of this play, thought highly of Robert Moses. D.All the New Yorkers don't think the Cross Bronx Expressway valuable. 31.In which section of the newspaper might the text appear? A.Environment. B.Lifestyle. C.Entertainment. D.Community. 0 "Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?Lindsey whispers to Tori. With her eyes shining,Tori brags,"You bet I did.Sean told me two days ago." Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about? It just happens to be yours tuly,Adam Freedman.I can tell you that what they are saying is (a)not nice and (b)not even true.Still,Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me.Many of our conversations are gossip ()I have noticed three effects of gossip:it can hurt people,it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group. An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about.Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic-breakups,trouble at home, even dropping out-that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is,the juicier the gossip it makes.Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain. If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it?The answer lies in another effect of gossip:the satisfaction it gives us.Sharing the latest rumor (can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't.Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the"in group".In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority () Gossip also can have a third effect:it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act.Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group.Translated into high school terms, this means 4 that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The do's and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook. The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation. The next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your"juicy story"might have. 32.Why does the author use a conversation at the beginning of the passage? A.To introduce a topic. B.To present an argument. C.To describe the characters. D.To clarify his writing purpose. 33.What is an important negative effect of gossip? A.Breaking up relationships. B.Causing unpleasant experiences. C.Embarrassing the listener. D.Spreading information around. 34.What does Professor David Wilson think that gossip can do? A.It attracts the police's attention to group behaviors. B.It forces schools to improve student handbooks. C.It helps people watch their own behaviors. D.It provides students with written rules. 35.What advice does the author give in the passage? A.Never become a gossiper. B.Stay away from gossipers. C.Don't let gossip turn into lies D.Think twice before you gossip. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Cloud storage (is a flexible and convenient way to store data with complete peace of mind.It enables you to store your data on distant servers.36 In this way,the space on your computer won't be taken up.There are two options available:public cloud storage allows you to share hosting space with other users;private cloud storage is the ideal choice for companies who want to have their data stored in their own environment. 37 Once you have registered and set up your account, you simply save your files via the Internet using your username and password. This ensures your data remains secure and inaccessible to anyone else.Should you choose, you can put certain permissions in place, which makes it easy to share your data with your colleagues or your family. When you sign up to cloud storage, you can choose the amount of space you need.38You can store anything digital:all your files, videos and pictures.Whether you want to use this storage solution to store your family photographs or you want to use it to store your work documentation, you will find it quite convenient. Is it better than your computer or an external drive ()The answer is a definite yes.39 This is the most common cause of lost work and memories.Extemal hard drives can still break,or fail. Here you also have the added risk of misplacing it or having it stolen. There are so many advantages to cloud computing, from the ability to access your data from wherever, whenever,to not needing expensive external storage devices.40 A.Computers crash all the time. B.Cloud storage is very simple to use. C.You will find cloud storage very cheap. D.This means you can store all your digital things remotely. E.Cloud storage providers offer many layers of data security. F.You can start with a small amount and increase the storage size later on. Some people might argue that it wasn't a good idea for my parents to take us out of school for a year. But I think it was a wonderful opportunity.Having connections in all those countries has been incredibly enriching.Travelling is a great thing, and I hope you all have the chance to do a lot too. 2
