A Can you stand on one leg for 10 seconds? Just 15 minutes a day of practice can be beneficial, but do more if you have time. Starting earlier helps: try the exercises below on a hard, level surface. Easy Level: Standing on one leg—with your hands resting on a work surface if you’re feeling unsteady—see how long you can maintain your balance. Do this one while you’re brushing your teeth. Medium Level: For this movement, start from standing and take a big step forwards, bending your front leg until your trailing knee just brushes the floor. Then push off your front leg and return to a standing position. Hard Level: Try step-ups on to a step or box: put one foot on to a box and push through that heel to step up so both feet end up together. To ensure you aren’t using your trailing leg to help, keep your toes off the ground on that foot. Balance could be a matter of life and death. The World Health Organization estimates that 684,000 fatal falls occur each year, making falling the second leading cause of unintentional injury death. Some of these falls are caused by more serious conditions – but many aren’t. According to George Locker, a long-term practitioner of tai chi, a loss of balance is a medical problem that can’t be treated with drugs or surgery, despite its effects. Increasingly, efforts are being made to remedy (补救) the balance problem among the groups already most affected by it. Tai chi, practiced by an estimated 50 million people in China, is an option. Studies have shown that as little as eight weeks of practice can improve older adults’ scores on the Tinetti test—a commonly used measure of competence in basic tasks such as rising from a chair and walking—as well as reducing fear of falling. Longer periods of study show further benefits. Whatever activity you choose, the lesson is to work on your balance before you need to, not after it becomes an issue. As Locker puts it: everyone’s told to save money for their retirement, and nobody’s taught to save their balance. But both are difficult to get back once they’re gone. 26. What does George Locker think of a lack of balance? A. It is costly to get treated with drugs and surgery. B. It is a minor issue that doesn’t affect one’s overall health. C. It is a problem without any medical solution. D. It is a problem that can be easily fixed by exercising. 27. Which of the following best illustrates the Medium Level practice? A. B. C. D. 28. What is the lesson conveyed in the passage regarding balance and health? A. Balance is the top leading cause of sudden death from injuries. B. It is essential for those affected by balance issues to seek help. C. Tai chi is the most effective way to improve one’s balance. D. It is wiser to work on balance as early as possible. B We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new. For them, it’s just normal. This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age. Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes (戳) the page with his finger. What’s up with that? He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid? Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that. Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like your grandfather. Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produce audio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites. There’s one notable gap in my new-media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province. Anyway, grandpa is now an internet star — two minutes of fame! I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2-year-old grandson sees it on his tablet. 29. What do the underlined words “hit home for me” mean in paragraph 2? A. Provided shelter for me. B. Worked quite well on me. C. Took the pressure off me. D. Became very clear to me. 30. Why did the kid poke the storybook? A. He took it for a tablet computer. B. He disliked the colorful pictures. C. He was angry with his grandpa. D. He wanted to read it by himself. 31. What does the author think of himself? A. Socially ambitious. B. Physically attractive. C. Financially independent. D. Digitally competent. C The curb cut It’s a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. Yet, without it, daily life might be a lot harder — in more ways than one. Pushing a baby stroller onto the curb, skateboarding onto a sidewalk or taking a full grocery cart from the sidewalk to your car — all these tasks are easier because of the curb cut. But it was created with a different purpose in mind. It’s hard to imagine today, but back in the 1970s, most sidewalks in the United States ended with a sharp drop-off. That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps (斜坡) to help them move along city blocks without assistance. According to one disability rights leader, a six-inch curb “might as well have been Mount Everest”. So, activists from Berkeley, California, who also needed wheelchairs, organized a campaign to create tiny ramps at intersections to help people dependent on wheels move up and down curbs independently. I think about the “curb cut effect” a lot when working on issues around health equity (公平). The first time I even heard about the curb cut was in a 2017 Stanford Social Innovation Review piece by PolicyLink CEO Angela Blackwell. Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity as “a zero-sum game (零和游戏)” and that it’s commonly believed there is a “prejudiced societal suspicion that intentionally supporting one group hurts another.” What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, everyone wins.” There are multiple examples of this principle at work. For example, investing in policies that create more living-wage jobs or increase the availability of affordable housing certainly benefits people in communities that have limited options. But, the action also empowers those people with opportunities for better health and the means to become contributing members of society — and that benefits everyone. Even the football huddle (密商) was initially created to help deaf football players at Gallaudet College keep their game plans secret from opponents who could have read their sign language. Today, it’s used by every team to prevent the opponent from learning about game-winning strategies. So, next time you cross the street, or roll your suitcase through a crosswalk or ride your bike directly onto a sidewalk — think about how much the curb cut, that change in design that broke down walls of exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but all of us. 32. What was the curb cut designed for at first? A. Riding a skateboard onto a sidewalk quickly. B. Pushing a baby stroller onto the curbs independently. C. Making it easy for wheelchairs to move up and down curbs. D. Taking a full grocery cart from the sidewalk to a customer’s car. 33. By “might as well have been Mount Everest” (paragraph 3), the disability rights leader implies that a six-inch curb may become ________. A. an unforgettable symbol B. an impassable barrier C. an important sign D. an impressive landmark 34. According to Angela Blackwell, many people believe that ________. A. it’s impossible for everyone to benefit equally B. it’s necessary to go all out to help the disabled C. it’s not worthwhile to promote health equity D. it’s fair to give the disadvantaged more help than others 35. Which of the following examples best illustrates the “curb cut effect” principle? A. Parks designed for city dwellers provide fun for people of all ages. B. Phones first made for business people become popular with the public. C. Subtitles created for the hearing-impaired end up benefiting all viewers. D. Drugs developed for rare diseases help more relevant patients over time. 36. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage? A. Everyday items are originally invented for people in need of help. B. Action empowers those with opportunities for better solutions. C. Society should create circumstances that get everyone involved. D. Caring for disadvantaged groups may finally benefit all. D Americans clearly love their museums. One of the most famous, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), saw a record 6.5 million visitors in 2015. But record attendance doesn’t necessarily translate into record revenue. Last month, the Met said it was trying to erase a USS10 million budget deficit. Meanwhile, one of its rivals, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), was abundant in cash, but only about three million people stopped by in 2015. Why do some museums flourish while others flounder? My research leads me to believe there are three reasons: fashion, billionaires and demographics. First, underlying the Met’s financial challenges is the problem with the acquisitions policy. Recent directors of the Met did not add much to the museum’s modern collection. The argument was that museums such as the MoMA were already providing such works in their collections and that the acquisition of contemporary art by living artists was problematic and risky. However, given the fact that museum-goers increasingly favor contemporary art, the revenue of the Met will likely fall if it isn’t able to keep up with the tastes of the customers. And by the time it might recognize this, it’s already too late to do much about it because the costs to acquire the in-demand art is sky-high. This leads to a second critical issue-the changing distribution of income and its effects on museum finance and operation. We are living in a boom period for contemporary art. The number of auctions and art fairs has grown enormously to accommodate this growing market. In a world with about 1,800 billionaires, it only takes a relative few to drive high-end art prices to astronomical levels. Works by the German artist Gerhard Richter have generated $1.2 billion in sales in recent years. The soaring prices mean museums simply can’t keep up and must usually depend on donations to assemble the best works, or they’re priced out. Moreover, billionaires themselves are increasingly setting up their own private museums, further distancing the ability of public museums to get the good stuff. A third interrelated problem is that demographic issues have put pressure on the revenue side. Unemployment, early retirements and the aging of the population in the US have contributed to increased attendance at museums. You might think it’s a good thing, but more traffic means higher costs, and when those additional visitors don’t result in more revenue, profitability goes down. This is because of the longstanding movement toward making museums “free” by having individuals, government or businesses “sponsor” the cost. But when that support gets reduced by budget costs or another reason, museums must either cover the cost themselves or lose patrons by suddenly charging fees. There is evidence that attendance rises when economic growth slows, but that’s also when those “sponsors” are more likely to begin to disappear. Museums will certainly continue to exist and provide us with invaluable insights into our culture. But they must exist under economic principles, and it’d be wise for their administrators to consider the economies in their calculations. 37. According to the author, ________. A. MoMA saw a rise in donation due to its increased attendance B. the Met failed to respond to the artistic tastes of modern visitors C. the Met considered works of the living artists as questionable D. MoMA added to its modern collection despite the budget deficit 38. What can we infer from the passage? A. Billionaires control art auctions to price out public museums. B. The boom of modern art will lead visitors to private museums. C. The increase in visitors can hurt the profitability of museums. D. Economic slowdowns result in a weakened interest in museums. 39. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of museums in the US? A. Pessimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Uncertain. 40. Which is the best title of the passage? A. How can Museums Boost Revenues? B. Should Museums Charge Entrance Fees? C. Will Museums Survive in a Fast-changing World? D. What Causes the Financial Challenges of Museums? C 27. B 28. 根据第六段“According to George Locker, a long-term practitioner of tai chi, a loss of balance is a medical problem that can’t be treated with drugs or surgery, despite its effects.(长期练习太极拳的乔治·洛克认为,失去平衡是一种医学问题,尽管药物或手术有用,但是无法治愈)”可知,乔治·洛克认为缺乏平衡是一个没有任何医学解决办法的问题。 根据第四段“Medium Level: For this movement, start from standing and take a big step forwards, bending your front leg until your trailing knee just brushes the floor. Then push off your front leg and return to a standing position.(中等水平:这个动作,从站立开始,向前迈出一大步,弯曲你的前腿,直到你的后膝刚刚触地。然后蹬开你的前腿,回到站立的姿势)”可知,B图属于中级做法。故选B。 【28题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Whatever activity you choose, the lesson is to work on your balance before you need to, not after it becomes an issue. As Locker puts it: everyone’s told to save money for their retirement, and nobody’s taught to save their balance. But both are difficult to get back once they’re gone. (无论你选择什么活动,教训是在你需要之前就开始锻炼你的平衡能力,而不是在它成为一个问题之后。正如洛克所说:每个人都被告知要为退休存钱,但没有人被教导要平衡。但是一旦失去平衡能力了,就很难再回来了)”可知,尽早学习平衡是更明智的做法。故选D。 B We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. D 30. A 31. 根据第一段“We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new. For them, it’s just normal.(我们记者身处一个拥有众多新型多媒体工具的全新叙事时代,很多年轻人甚至察觉不到这是新鲜事物,对他们而言这只是常态)”以及第二段画线部分的下文“I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.(春节假期,我和两岁的孙子坐在沙发上。我带了一本儿童读物来读。上面有简单的文字和色彩丰富的图画——与他的年龄非常匹配。)”作者与孙子相处的亲身经历可知,这件事让作者彻底明白了前文所说的道理。“hit home for me”意为“让我彻底明白、让我深有体会”。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that.(他的父亲经常用平板电脑逗孩子玩,里面装满了彩色图片,戳一下就会动起来。他以为我的故事书也是那样的。)”可知,孩子戳故事书是因为他误以为它是一台平板电脑。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据第六段中“Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produce audio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites. (好吧,我可能老了,但从数字化角度来说,我并不是无可救药地落伍。我编辑视频、制作音频、使用移动支付,甚至还建过网站。)”可知,作者认为自己精通数字技术。 C The curb cut It’s a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. C 33. B 34. A 35. C 36. 根据第三段“So, activists from Berkeley, California, who also needed wheelchairs, organized a campaign to create tiny ramps at intersections to help people dependent on wheels move up and down curbs independently.(因此,来自加州伯克利、同样依靠轮椅出行的活动人士发起行动,在路口修建小型斜坡,方便依靠轮具出行的人独立上下路缘。)” 根据第三段“It’s hard to imagine today, but back in the 1970s, most sidewalks in the United States ended with a sharp drop-off. That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps to help them move along city blocks without assistance.(如今很难想象,但在 20 世纪 70 年代,美国大多数人行道边缘都是陡峭落差。这对轮椅使用者来说是巨大难题,没有斜坡,他们无法独自沿街通行。)”可推知,六英寸高的路缘对于轮椅使用者而言如同珠峰一样难以跨越,是无法通行的障碍。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity as “a zero-sum game (零和游戏)” and that it’s commonly believed there is a “prejudiced societal suspicion that intentionally supporting one group hurts another.”(布莱克威尔正确地指出,许多人将公平视为“零和游戏”,并且人们普遍认为,“社会上存在一种带有偏见的猜疑,即故意支持一个群体就会伤害另一个群体。”)” 根据第四段“What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, everyone wins.”(布莱克威尔表示,路缘斜坡效应所揭示的是,“当社会创造条件,让那些被落下的弱势群体能够充分参与并做出贡献时,所有人都会受益。”)” 根据第四段“What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, everyone wins.”(布莱克威尔表示,路缘斜坡效应所揭示的是,“当社会创造条件,让那些被落下的弱势群体能够充分参与并做出贡献时,所有人都会受益。”)”以及最后一段“that change in design that broke down walls of exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but all of us.(这种设计上的改变打破了对某一处于劣势的群体的排斥壁垒,不仅帮助了这个群体,也帮助了我们所有人)”可知,文章最终得出的结论是关怀弱势群体最终可能会让所有人都受益。 D Americans clearly love their museums. B 38. C 39. C 40. 根据第二段中“However, given the fact that museum-goers increasingly favor contemporary art, the revenue of the Met will likely fall if it isn’t able to keep up with the tastes of the customers.(然而,鉴于参观博物馆的人越来越喜欢当代艺术,如果不能跟上顾客的品味,大都会博物馆的收入可能会下降)”可知,大都会未能对现代游客的艺术品味作出反应。 根据倒数第二段中“You might think it’s a good thing, but more traffic means higher costs, and when those additional visitors don’t result in more revenue, profitability goes down.(你可能认为这是一件好事,但更多的流量意味着更高的成本,而当这些额外的访客不能带来更多的收入时,盈利能力就会下降)”可推知,游客数量的增加会损害博物馆的盈利能力。 根据最后一段“Museums will certainly continue to exist and provide us with invaluable insights into our culture. But they must exist under economic principles, and it’d be wise for their administrators to consider the economies in their calculations.(博物馆肯定会继续存在,并为我们提供了解我们文化的宝贵见解。但它们必须存在于经济原则之下,对它们的管理者来说,在计算中考虑经济是明智的)”可推知,作者对美国博物馆的未来持谨慎态度。故选C。 【40题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Americans clearly love their museums. My research leads me to believe there are three reasons: fashion, billionaires and demographics.(美国人显然喜欢他们的博物馆。 Part IV Discourse Structure (2’×5) Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym, ” while another read: “___41___” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition. So, how do you find a workout partner? First of all, decide what you want from that person. ___42___ Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility? Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner. You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. ___43___ If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym. My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. ___44___ You and your partner will probably have different skills. ___45___ Over time, both of you will benefit—your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other. A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward. B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by. C. You’ll work harder if you train with someone else. D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport? E. How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice? F. Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other. G. Any notice for a training partner should include such information. C 42. D 43. B 44. G 45. 【41题详解】 根据前文“Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,”(《健身杂志》最近刊登了一篇题为《感谢健身伙伴的五个理由》的文章。一个理由是:“如果你知道有人在健身房等你,你就会去锻炼。”)”以及后文“With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition. (有一个锻炼伙伴,你将会努力训练,因为你们之间有一个微妙的竞争)”可知,空处陈述另一个和别人一起锻炼的理由,故选项应与后文是顺承关系,选项C中的“train with someone else”与后文的“With a workout partner”相对应,选项C“You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.(如果你和别人一起训练,你会更努力)”符合语意。故选C项。 【42题详解】 根据前文“First of all, decide what you want from that person. (首先,决定你想从那个人身上得到什么)”和后文“Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?(或者你只是想要身体健康,能够移动的力量和灵活性?)” D“Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport? (你想在你最喜欢的运动项目上成为更好的运动员吗?)”与后文在语意上构成选择关系。故选D项。 【43题详解】 根据前文“You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won't result in a useful response. (你可能会考虑在社交媒体上发布你想要的东西,但可能不会得到有用的回应)”和后文“If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.(如果你打算在健身房锻炼,那个人一定是同一个健身房的)”可知,寻找的锻炼伙伴要具有便利性的特点。选项B中的“live close by”与后文的“belong to the same gym”相对应,选项B“A workout partner usually needs to live close by. (锻炼伙伴通常需要住在附近)”与下文是顺承关系。故选B项。 【44题详解】 根据前文“My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. (我的搭档把她的要求贴在了当地公园的布告栏上。她的注意事项包括她想要做什么样的锻炼,每周多少天,每次培训要花多少小时,以及她的年龄。它还列出了她最喜欢的运动和活动,并提供了她的电话号码)”可知,本段作者以自己的锻炼伙伴为例,说明寻找锻炼伙伴布告所要包括的信息。所以选项G“Any notice for a training partner should include such information. (任何锻炼伙伴的布告都应包括这些信息)”是对上文内容的总结,符合语意。故选G项。 【45题详解】 根据前文“You and your partner will probably have different skills. (你和你的伴侣可能有不同的技能)”和后文“Over time, both of you will benefit—your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other. (久而久之,你们双方都会受益—你的伴侣会举起更多的重量,你也会变得更健康。你们关系的核心是你们永远在一起互相帮助)”可知,要学会求同存异,一起合作,共同提高。选项F中的“differences”对应前文的“different skills”,选项中的“work with each other”对应后文的“be there to help each other”,故选项F“Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other. (接受你们的不同,学会彼此合作)”起到承上启下的作用,符合语意。故选F项。 【点睛】 Part V Vocabulary Section A (0.5’×10) 选出可以填入句子空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。每个选项只能用一遍,每组有两个多余选项。 A. compel, B. delightful, C. perceive, D. projection, E. make light of, F. smell the roses, G. put on the spot 46.
