When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.
After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied, “you’ll get there in five minutes,” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it.
Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world—the Grand Canyon.
I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!
I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself. “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. What do you think?

How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动), and it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries, springs (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock was developed. It was also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, the digital clock came. And nowadays satellites (卫星) send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work.
26. According to the passage, we can’t use a ________ to tell the time on a rainy day.

For centuries, the Forbidden City has been an imposing (雄伟壮观的) place. Emperors and their advisers gave suggestions on the biggest things for centuries. However, since 1912, the palace has lost its original function. It was treated as a normal museum. Most of the halls were closed to the public, and a few were open for tourists.
But as the Forbidden City’s birthday is coming, a big change has been taking place. Even the dark and dusty corners of the palace have changed a lot. In 2012, only 30% was open to the public. Now, 80% of the palace is open to tourists. The Chinese government has put money into traditional culture. And it called on the Forbidden City to better show its holdings. But even all that new space is not enough to show the treasures collected over the centuries. The Forbidden City can show only about 30,000 objects at a time, or 2% of its total.
The museum staff have also become more creative in using the space. During a recent visit, there was a show on how the imperial family (皇家) celebrated the Chinese New Year.
The new gift stores are not the same as before. Instead of key chains and dolls, there are more beautiful china, textiles, and even furniture. The new shops were especially attractive. They offered traditional products made by government-recognized (政府承认的) masters using traditional methods.
Three Changes in the Forbidden City
______
More creative activities to be held
More traditional products to be made
Many tourists show their opinions about the changes.
We never used to come here because there wasn’t really too much to see. But now we can walk around and see new exhibitions. It makes it easier for younger people or children to know the past.
The most attractive part of the Forbidden City today is that the great walls around it are now mostly open to the public. As we walk along the way, we can get a good view of the grounds.
Their gift store has even become fashionable in some circles. It’s good that the Forbidden City is taking a lead in keeping these traditional practices alive.
46. What was the main function of the Forbidden City for centuries?
_________________________________________________
47. How many objects does the Forbidden City have in total?

48. Why did the new shops become more popular than before?

Should teenagers be allowed to take art classes on weekends?
Many parents believe art classes will affect teenagers’ study because they have heavy schoolwork. They hope kids spend all free time on lessons. However, I totally disagree.
In my opinion, taking art classes is a good way to relax and develop our hobbies. It helps us reduce pressure from study.
As for me, I advise teenagers to manage time wisely. We should learn to balance study and hobbies. If we make good plans, art classes won’t be a problem. Instead, they can bring us joy and make us more energetic.

28. How many kinds of clocks are mentioned in the passage?

29. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1 ②=Paragraph 2...)

30. What does the passage mainly talk about?

The most attractive part of the Forbidden City today is that the great walls around it are now mostly open to the public. As we walk along the way, we can get a good view of the grounds.
