Starter Unit 3 Welcome! Lesson 1 Section A 1a-2d
Teaching Objectives
1. Identify common plants and animals in a Chinese countryside courtyard from pictures, and master their singular and plural English nouns.
2. Recognize cardinal numbers within 20 through listening and accurately record quantity information.
3. Capture key words and detailed facts while listening to audio materials.
4. Communicate with partners freely about plants, animals and related details in a courtyard by using numbers, animal & plant nouns, demonstrative pronouns, singular/plural nouns and simple present tense.
Teaching Content
This lesson features a picture of a traditional Chinese rural courtyard. By observing and discussing the scene, students talk about various animals and plants with curiosity, cultivate love for nature and experience the joy of countryside life.
The lesson reviews primary school knowledge including numbers, creature words, demonstrative pronouns, noun number changes and simple present tense. From the perspective of foreign students Peter and Helen, students discover unique features of Chinese farmyards and learn how to ask about unfamiliar plants and animals.
The listening part consists of three short dialogues set in the same courtyard scene. Curious Peter and Helen ask Grandpa Fu Xing about unknown creatures, and Grandpa answers them patiently. Target vocabulary and sentence patterns for identifying animals/plants are naturally embedded in the conversations.
Activity 2d provides core sentence frames as language supports. Students can flexibly use words about creatures and numbers to make conversations based on the picture in 1a and describe details of the farmyard.
