Teaching Objectives

1.               Master the pronunciation of greetings: hi, hello, good morning; be able to read and write seven main characters’ names, and get familiar with the textbook core characters.

2.               Take the initiative to greet new friends, respond politely and introduce yourself properly.

3.               Distinguish and master the pronunciation of the 26 English letters, and write them in standard handwriting.

4.               Master the sounds of the 26 letters and classify them by their vowel sounds.

5.               Recognize and understand common English abbreviations in daily life.

Teaching Content

Page 1 of the textbook shows a scene where a group of middle school students meet and greet each other at the school gate in the morning, introducing the unit theme and core expressions. The students in the picture are the main characters

of this textbook series: Chinese students Fu Xing, Teng Fei, Yaming; British exchange students Peter and his elder sister Helen; American twin sisters Emma and Ella.

•                     Activity 1a: The pictures show three groups of characters having short conversations. It presents the seven main characters and key greeting sentences like Hello! Hi! Good morning. It lays language foundation for the following listening tasks.

•                     Activity 1b: Oral output practice. Students use the greetings from 1a to talk with partners, consolidate target language and know more classmates.

Activities 2a–2d include listening conversations in three scenarios: teacher talking to the whole class, teacher greeting new students, and new friends saying hello to each other. While finishing listening exercises, students learn suitable greetings for different occasions and compare the differences between Chinese and English greeting manners.

The pronunciation section of Starter Unit 1 focuses on the 26 English letters:

1.               Activity 1: Letters used in real-life scenes.

2.               Activity 2: Group letters that share the same vowel sound, helping students summarize pronunciation rules.

3.               Activity 3: Common daily abbreviations to spark students’ interest in letters.
