Unit 1 Lights,Camera,Action! How Are Movies Filmed? A Behind-the-Scenes Look When you sit in a cinema enjoying a wonderful movie, you might only focus on actors’ amazing performances or attractive plots. Few people stop to think about the long and complex process behind every film. A finished movie is the fruit of joint efforts of dozens of workers, and every stage requires careful planning and creativity. The whole journey starts with a script. The script lays out the story, dialogues and main scenes, serving as the blueprint for the whole project. Once the script is confirmed, producers will raise money and build the filming team, including directors, actors, photographers and sound engineers. During shooting, the crew works closely together. Directors guide actors to express feelings properly. Cinematographers decide lighting, camera angles and frames. Many classic scenes cannot be completed in one try. Crew members often shoot one scene again and again until they get the perfect effect. This explains why filming usually takes far more time than audiences imagine. However, shooting is just the middle step. Plenty of important work happens after filming, known as post-production. Editors cut thousands of video clips into a smooth, logical story. Sound effects are added to enrich scenes. For example, the sound of wind, rain or animal calls may not be recorded on set and are produced later. Visual effects are also widely used in modern films. Some scenes are shot in front of a green screen. Special software helps designers add imagined landscapes, creatures or fantastic environments. Color grading is another key step. Experts adjust colors to create certain moods: cold dark colors for horror films, warm bright tones for romantic stories. After all editing and effects are finished, the final cut of the movie is completed. Then comes marketing. Trailers, posters and interviews help draw public attention. Finally, the movie can be shown in cinemas or streaming platforms. Every successful film relies on teamwork. There is no magic on screen. What we watch is thousands of hours of careful work from people who love film. Next time you enjoy a movie, spare a thought for all the unknown workers behind the camera. The writer laid out all plots in the script. The script serves as the guide for the whole crew. spare a thought for 体谅;想一想 Spare a thought for the hard-working film crew. rely on 依靠,依赖 Filmmaking relies on close teamwork. 1. When you sit in a cinema enjoying a wonderful movie, you might only focus on actors’ amazing performances or attractive plots. 2. A finished movie is the fruit of joint efforts of dozens of workers, and every stage requires careful planning and creativity. 【高考真题链接】 (2024·浙江·高考真题)Tom Sawyer Play Is an Adventure A 35-minute hand-clapping, foot-stomping musical version of a Mark Twain favorite returns with this Tall Stacks festival. “Tom Sawyer: A River Adventure” has all the good stuff, including the fence painting, the graveyard, the island and the cave. We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK. Grosvenor Park, Chester Every summer, Storyhouse theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees three diverse performances: The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show. Minack Theatre, Cornwall Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the sky-blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare. Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally splendid productions at the amphitheatre located in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas. Shakespeare in the Squares, London Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? These guys live up to the theatre’s name, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year. This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well. 1.Which play fascinates the author of this passage most? A.The Gangs of New York. B.The Importance of Being Earnest. C.The Wizard of Oz. As the daughter of a Huangmei Opera performer, she made her first performance at 10 years old in 1978. From that point on, her career has become closely connected with the art’s development. But Huangmei Opera’s path has not been easy. Like many traditional Chinese art forms, it has struggled against the pull of modern fun and digital media. Some productions failed to connect with modern life. Younger audiences lost interest and left. Meanwhile, low pay and limited career chances drove performers elsewhere. In order to revive the art form, Han has been working to strengthen its foundation (基础). Under her leadership, the city of Anqing in Anhui established a range of facilities to support the development of Huangmei Opera. Yet basic facilities alone are not enough. “In 2010, I realized that without generations of newcomers, our mission could not continue,” Han said. Therefore, for nearly seven years after assuming her teaching post, she gave up acting in new shows for herself, focusing mainly on training students. As college head of the Huangmei Opera Arts College at Anqing Normal University, she personalizes training programs based on each student’s strengths — whether voice quality, or acting style — encouraging them to develop unique artistic identities while mastering the classical plays. Breaking with the opera world’s long-standing rules, where lead roles traditionally go to senior performers, Han introduces what she calls an “everyone can be the lead” model. Her dreams go beyond China. On July 3, 2025, Han led her team in a flash performance at Frankfurt’s Römer Square in Germany. She sang excerpts (片段) from familiar operas. People were attracted. “It is not easy to find a lifelong love,” she said. “I was fortunate to find this calling, and I have never left it.” 1.What difficulty did Huangmei Opera face? A.Poor performance. B.Fixed rules of classical plays. C.Limited training chances. D.Competition from digital media. 2.Why did Han stop acting in new shows for seven years? A.To build more theaters. B.To develop young talent. C.To update classical plays. D.To enter the foreign market. 3.What is special about Han’s training model? A.Creating new acting styles. B.Giving seniors the lead roles. C.Focusing on individual gifts. D.Simplifying classical operas. 4.Which of the following can best describe Han Zaifen? A.Determined. B.Generous. C.Humorous. D.Independent. 根据原文第二段“Like many traditional Chinese art forms, it has struggled against the pull of modern fun and digital media.(和许多中国传统艺术形式一样,它在现代娱乐和数字媒体的冲击下举步维艰。)” 根据原文第三段“Therefore, for nearly seven years after assuming her teaching post, she gave up acting in new shows for herself, focusing mainly on training students.(因此,在任职教学岗位后的近七年时间里,她放弃了出演新剧目,主要专注于培养学生。)” 根据原文第四段“As college head of the Huangmei Opera Arts College at Anqing Normal University, she personalizes training programs based on each student’s strengths — whether voice quality, or acting style — encouraging them to develop unique artistic identities while mastering the classical plays.(作为安庆师范大学黄梅戏艺术学院院长,她根据学生的嗓音、表演风格等个人优势制定个性化培养方案,鼓励学生在掌握经典剧目的同时,打造独特的艺术特色。)” 根据原文第一段“As the daughter of a Huangmei Opera performer, she made her first performance at 10 years old in 1978. From that point on, her career has become closely connected with the art’s development.(作为黄梅戏演员的女儿,她于1978年10岁时首次登台演出。从那时起,她的职业生涯便与这门艺术的发展紧密相连。)”及第三段“Therefore, for nearly seven years after assuming her teaching post, she gave up acting in new shows for herself, focusing mainly on training students.(因此,在任职教学岗位后的近七年时间里,她放弃了出演新剧目,主要专注于培养学生。)” Passage 4 (25-26高一下·辽宁·期末)Tilly Norwood officially made her acting debut in October 2025 at the Zurich Film Festival. She first appeared in the short film AI Commissioner three months earlier. But Norwood was made by artificial intelligence (AI). The AI “actress” was created by Xicoia, the AI branch of the UK production company Particle6. And AI Commissioner is an AI-generated short film, written by ChatGPT. Norwood introduces a new type of technology to Hollywood. Unlike computer-generated imagery, where an actor’s movements are turned into a digital character, there is no human behind Norwood’s performance. Every expression and line delivery is created by AI. Norwood has been trained on the performances of hundreds of actors, without any payment or consent. She draws on the information from those performances for her expressions and line delivery. Her arrival comes less than two years after the artist strikes that brought Hollywood to a standstill, with AI a central issue in the protests. Norwood also started a debate on what counts as art. We consider creativity to be a human quality. Art is generally understood as an expression of human experience. However, Norwood’s performances do not come from such creativity or human experience; instead, a database of pre-existing performances. How can that be compared with actors’ performances — a craft they have developed throughout years of practice and hard work in their careers? Also, Norwood’s survival depends on how the audience feels. If they do accept AI actors, there could be a major effect on jobs. Entry- and mid-level acting jobs could disappear. AI actors could also reduce the demand for whole creative teams — from makeup and costume to lighting and set design — since they reduce the need for on-set artistry. Norwood is not a question of the future of Hollywood. She is a cultural stress test — a case study in how much we value human creativity. AI is here, and some audiences will accept it. The risk is that in choosing imitation (模仿) over human artistry, we change culture in ways that cannot be easily reversed (逆转). 1.What kind of film is AI Commissioner? A.An old-school movie. B.A science fiction movie. C.An independent film of Zurich. D.A film wholly made by non-human. 2.What can be learnt about Norwood? A.She is popular with audiences. B.She is replacing human performers. C.She learns acting from data-collection. D.She is a product of Hollywood strike. 3.What can be concluded from the last paragraph? A.AI imitation brings damage to humans. B.AI stars will be part of Hollywood. C.Hollywood won’t value human creativity. D.AI performers will be accepted by all the audience. 4.What is the main idea of the passage? A.AI-generated films redefine art. B.Film industry faces new challenges. C.Imitation of human artistry damages movies. D.An AI actress made her first appearance. 根据第二段“And AI Commissioner is an AI-generated short film, written by ChatGPT.(《AI专员》是一部由人工智能生成的短片,剧本由ChatGPT创作。)” 根据第四段“Norwood has been trained on the performances of hundreds of actors, without any payment or consent. She draws on the information from those performances for her expressions and line delivery.(Norwood通过学习数百名演员的表演素材完成训练,全程未支付任何报酬,也未征得演员们的许可。她利用这些表演资料生成面部表情与台词演绎。)”可知,该AI角色依靠收集的表演数据学习演技。 3.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Norwood is not a question of the future of Hollywood. The study found that a drama-based approach to teaching Shakespeare broadened children’s vocabulary, improved the quality of their writing, and improved their emotional understanding. “The way actors work makes a big difference to how children use language and how they think about themselves,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, lead researcher of the study. The study involved hundreds of Year 5 pupils (aged nine and ten) from 45 state primary schools. They were divided into a target group and a control group. Both groups were asked to read a passage from Romeo and Juliet and write a letter as Romeo after being apart from Juliet. The only difference was that the target group first took part in a 30-minute drama-based activity, while the control group did not. It was shown that pupils in the target group drew on a wider vocabulary, used more complicated or rarer words, and wrote at greater length. They also appeared more comfortable writing in role. While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion. O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding shown in the children’s writing, and that they expressed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly. “It is probably related to the drama-based process, where you are used to trying to think and feel as the character,” she added. But could the results be reproduced with any old dramatists? O’Hanlon said more research would be needed. However, she pointed out Shakespeare’s unique value: his 20,000-word vocabulary gives children a huge language improvement. Only when they act the words out with their whole bodies does this effect come to life. 1.How can children benefit from Shakespeare’s works based on the study? A.By rewriting Shakespeare’s plays. B.By performing Shakespeare’s works. C.By learning Shakespeare’s lines by heart. D.By watching professional acting on stage. 2.What can be inferred about the target group in the study? A.They wrote shorter texts but expressed more emotions. B.They struggled with Shakespeare’s difficult vocabulary. C.They preferred writing about their own personal experiences. D.They could understand and express characters’ feelings better. 3.What did O’Hanlon think of the target group’s emotional depth? A.Impressive. B.Ordinary. C.Disappointing. D.Confusing. 4.What can be learned from the text? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Reading makes a full man. C.Learning by doing works best. D.Actions speak louder than words. 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.C 【导语】本文介绍一项研究表明,通过戏剧表演的方式学习莎士比亚作品,能够拓宽孩子词汇量、提升写作水平并加深情感理解,对比实验证实参与戏剧活动的学生表现更突出,研究者也指出莎士比亚丰富的词汇量只有通过肢体演绎才能发挥教学优势。 1.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“The grammar school boy from Stratford-Upon-Avon has made headlines again after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act him out.(一项开创性研究表明莎士比亚作品确实有益于孩子读写能力与情感发展,但前提是孩子们要演绎他的作品)”可知,孩子通过表演莎士比亚作品从中获益。 2.推理判断题。根据文章第四段“While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion.(对照组学生想象自己与爱人分离的感受,实验组学生换位思考罗密欧,表达角色的情绪)”可推知,实验组学生能更好地理解和表达人物的情感。 3.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding shown in the children’s writing, and that they expressed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly.(奥汉伦表示,她对孩子们作文中展现出的情感理解最为惊讶,他们共情更深、情绪表达更生动)”可知,她认为实验组孩子展现的情感深度令人印象深刻。 4.主旨大意题。根据全文多处内容,第三段实验组参与戏剧实践活动,第四段、第六段说明亲身演绎能充分发挥莎士比亚作品的教学效果,可推知文章核心体现实践式学习效果最好。 Passage 6 (25-26高二下·湖南衡阳·期末)AI-powered short dramas have transformed from a technological novelty into a cultural phenomenon over the past few months. Produced at high speeds, these stories not only lower the barriers to cross-cultural understanding, but also provide a new narrative framework for new-media content creation. It’s a narrative that can be endlessly adapted and expanded — and audiences adore it. AI drives the entire short-drama production pipeline, from script generation to scene creation and visual effects. This means content can be produced and distributed in near real-time. As a result, stories can now reach wider audiences than ever before, all at low cost and with high efficiency. However, AI is not merely a technical gimmick (噱头) to draw in viewers. Instead, it paves the way for bold experiments in narrative innovation, establishing a new model for creators. AI-powered short dramas have already established a well-defined human-machine collaborative (合作的) work-flow. Creative teams concentrate on vision, narrative framing, and meaning-making, while AI enhances production efficiency and broadens the scope of expression. This signals a shift in focus for AI-powered short dramas, moving from a pursuit of quantity to a refined emphasis on quality. As these productions compete with other forms of dramas, their strength lies not in cost-cutting or efficiency gains, but in their ability to translate complex narrative issues into rich, emotionally charged visual storytelling. However, if AI-powered short dramas aim to enhance their quality and influence on a global scale, they require a clear understanding of the boundaries of technology-enabled communication. It is crucial for content creators to understand and respect diverse cultures. They need to exercise self-restraint (自我克制) and follow ethical standards and legal rules. No matter how technology evolves, the most important part of any short drama remains an engaging story. When creators use characters and narratives to build emotional connections and dramatic tension, AI becomes an enabler. 1.According to paragraph 2, what advantage do AI short dramas have? A.They cost little and are made fast. B.They don’t need any creative ideas. C.They can replace human workers. D.They avoid cultural differences. 2.What should creators pay attention to? A.Making more short dramas. B.Using technology without limits. C.Prioritizing speed and cutting costs. D.Respecting cultures and obeying laws. 3.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph? A.Visual quality is key, while AI is a tool. B.Engaging stories are key, while AI is a tool. C.Cultural themes are key, while AI is a creator. D.Technical efficiency is key, while AI is a creator. 4.What is the text mainly about? A.History of video production. B.Development of AI stories. C.Rise and regulation of AI short dramas. D.Quality and efficiency of AI short dramas. 【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.C 【导语】文章介绍AI短剧从新奇技术发展为文化现象,阐述其优势、创作模式转变及高质量发展的规范与核心要义。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“This means content can be produced and distributed in near real-time. Unlike traditional professional movies that require huge teams and costly devices, modern filming allows ordinary students to record stories with simple cameras, proper lighting and basic editing skills. Liu Yu, a high school student, recently won a city youth film award with his self-created short film. Instead of focusing on fancy scenes or special effects, his film records the daily life of elderly craftsmen who stick to traditional handmade skills. He shot all the materials with a smartphone, adjusted soft lighting to create a warm atmosphere, and edited the videos patiently in his spare time. It took him nearly three months to finish the whole work. “Many teenagers love watching movies, but few try to create their own works,” Liu Yu said in an interview. “Filming is not just about taking beautiful pictures. It teaches me to observe life carefully and tell stories with screens. Lights and cameras are simple tools, but they help us discover the beauty around us and spread positive values.” He also added that creating a film taught him teamwork and time management, as he discussed plot designs and scene arrangements with his classmates. A professional film critic spoke highly of student-made short films. He believes that teenage creators have unique and fresh views of the world. Their works may lack perfect technology, but they are full of sincerity and creativity. Nowadays, more schools are providing basic filming courses, teaching students shooting skills, lighting settings and video editing. These practical abilities greatly enrich students’ after-school life and broaden their horizons. However, the critic also reminded young creators that a good film relies on a meaningful story rather than fancy equipment. Technology serves the content, and sincere emotion and positive themes are always the soul of a wonderful film. 1.What do we know about Liu Yu’s award-winning short film? A.It was completed with professional devices. B.It focuses on the life of traditional craftsmen. C.It is famous for amazing special effects. D.It took only several weeks to finish. 2.According to Liu Yu, what is the value of making short films? A.It helps him get more awards. B.It makes him popular among classmates. C.It allows him to master professional editing skills. D.It enables him to learn life observation and cooperation. 3.Which statement does the film critic agree with? A.Student films are worthless without perfect technology. B.Fancy equipment is the key to a successful film. C.True feelings and meaningful content matter most in films. D.Schools should offer more competition chances for students. 4.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To show how teenagers win film competitions. All can work well, but why do many adaptations and indeed remakes fail both cinema audiences and critics? And why do some adaptations get lower ratings than others? 1 Since a typical film is only around two hours long, it becomes a question for screenwriters to decide what is appropriate for the screen and what to leave out. Another problem area is the cast. Whether the cast are accepted by audiences can make or break a film. 2 Meanwhile, readers of the book use their imaginations to visualize characters and have very definite ideas about how characters should look and sound. 3 One may think that it is the book writer who is in the best position to do film adaptations. In fact, sometimes writers are very involved in the process and may even be the screenwriter. 4 They may be too close to the material and find it difficult to adapt to a new form. At other times they are not involved, and there are instances where writers have been very unsatisfied with the film versions of their work. 5 And possibly the best proof of a successful adaptation is the James Bond series, the majority of which has been adapted from the 007 novels of Ian Fleming. Perhaps unusually, audiences seem to accept that the actors who have played James Bond have changed so often, although everyone seems to have their favorite. A.They are familiar with their works. B.One problem concerns the types of films. C.This, however, can actually be a disadvantage. D.As a result, filmmakers often face criticism from readers. 编剧在剧本中规划好了全部情节。 serve as 充当;作为 The script serves as the guide for the whole crew. 剧本是全体摄制组的工作指南。 spare a thought for 体谅;想一想 Spare a thought for the hard-working film crew. 别忘了辛苦付出的摄制团队。 rely on 依靠,依赖 Filmmaking relies on close teamwork. 电影制作依靠紧密的团队合作。 【长难句分析】 1. Passage 4 (25-26高一下·辽宁·期末)Tilly Norwood officially made her acting debut in October 2025 at the Zurich Film Festival. Passage 5 (25-26高一下·广东河源·期末)The grammar school boy from Stratford-Upon-Avon has made headlines again after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act him out. Passage 6 (25-26高二下·湖南衡阳·期末)AI-powered short dramas have transformed from a technological novelty into a cultural phenomenon over the past few months. Passage 7 (25-26高一下·湖南湘西·期末)With the popularity of digital filming equipment, making short films has become a new favorite among teenagers. B.To explain why student-made short films are valuable. C.To introduce basic skills of shooting short films. D.To compare student films and professional movies. Passage 8 (25-26高二下·广东佛山·期末)The source material for a film may be taken from classic novels, short stories and other types of books. E.Actors are often chosen according to filmmakers’ preferences. F.A key question is obviously how close to the original the film is. G.Despite the challenges, there are successful films made from popular books. Passage 9 (25-26高一上·江苏常州·阶段检测)Zootopia 2, which was released in theaters during the Thanksgiving weekend, has already broken the box office (票房) records globally. The cartoon film produced by Walt Disney Company was a huge hit right from the start. The sequel (续篇) performed 239% higher than the 1 Zootopia did in its first weekend in March 2016. 2 , its dominance at the Chinese box office is also historic, 3 over 20 billion yuan in its Chinese opening weekend. The film’s success is no accident. It is 4 by several crucial elements. At the heart of its appeal are the 5 . Returning favorites Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are joined by a cast of new friends. These animals all have 6 personalities. Judy believes deeply that it’s her 7 to make the world a better place, a responsibility that puts the weight of the world on her shoulders. And her partner Nick always uses his casual manner to hide the bruises from a childhood of being judged. Other animals, like a talkative beaver 8 and two helpful goats who contribute a series of funny dialogues, also make the whole story really entertaining. The film is not only interesting but also carries a meaningful 9 .
