In your school, are you allowed to choose the subjects you want to learn? Of course, the answer is “No” in China.
In America there is a school trying something new. At a high school in Florida, students will be able to choose their own classes. We all know that some students are better at some subjects than others. Some students plan to go on to college, while others don’t. At this school students are able to find subjects they are interested in, and possibly even find the field (领域) they would like to go into after school. They are allowed to choose a subject like biology, math, a foreign language, or study skills like computer or car repair (修理).
Some people think this is a good idea, because it helps students think about what they want to do in the future, and the school helps to give them the knowledge and skills needed to get there. They say that giving the students the chance to choose their own classes makes high school more interesting. Others disagree. They think that fourteen-year-old teenagers are too young to know what they want to do in the future.
What do you think? Would you like to be able to choose your own classes? Many useful changes have been made in education, but seeing the differences in each student is also important. How can we help each student become a better student?
58. What are students at a high school in Florida allowed to do?
A. To learn how to make a computer or a car.

59. In which part of the magazine could we read the passage?

B. Because they think some students are too nervous to make a right decision.
C. Because they think some students shouldn’t be a repair worker in the future.
D. Because they think some students are too young to know what they want to do.
61. What can we get from the passage?
A. The writer thinks it’s not important to see the differences in each student.
B. All the high schools in Florida allow students to choose their own classes.
C. All people agree choosing their own classes can help them find their own possibilities.
D. The school in Florida helps students by giving the knowledge and skills they will need.
62. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. To Improve Learning Skills B. The History of Education

In northern Scotland, there is a long, deep lake called Loch Ness. More than 200 meters deep, it is the largest lake in the UK. People say a big monster (怪兽) lives in its dark, cold waters. It weighs more than 1,000 kilos and is at least 10 meters long. Some people say it has a head like a horse. Others say it looks like a snake. Many people travel to Loch Ness to look for this strange monster, but only a few people have seen it.
The Loch Ness Monster remains a mystery. People have made up so many stories about it, so it has become a famous legend (传说). The first story about the monster in Loch Ness was told more than 500 years ago, but it spread widely only in the twentieth century. In 1933, a couple reported that they saw a big monster in the middle of the lake. After that, a number of people said that they had seen a monster in Loch Ness. Several people had taken photos, but at least one of them was a hoax. They were just trying to catch people’s eyes. During the 1960s, a team was formed to look for the monster. They took many photos and made movies, but they were never able to find a monster.

How can you remember a song for a long time? Why does your teacher use songs to teach you English? There is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers (研究者) are studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. “Singing could be a new way of learning, especially for a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things in a catchy (易记的) and relaxing way. For example, children can remember difficult words quickly when they are in a song,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. If children find it difficult to learn foreign languages, this new way may help. On her blog (博客), Dr. Ludke wrote, “A listen-and-repeat singing way can help to learn foreign languages and open the door for future research in this area.”
Many language teachers know the importance of music and they often use it in teaching and learning. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D.C., likes using songs in teaching Chinese. She said, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids, we usually use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. Not only does it work, but it is fun for children. Sometimes I think if I learned English that way when I was young, maybe I could speak English much better.”
Our brain likes music in learning languages, especially for remembering. If you are still having problems in learning a language, why not try singing it out?
68. Who likes using songs in teaching Chinese according to the passage?
A. A researcher. B. Dr. Karen Ludke. C. Hua Zhuying. D. The writer.
69. Why can singing help people learn foreign languages?
A. Because singing makes people happy.
B. Because people can learn languages from the lyrics.
C. Because it’s easier for the brain to remember things in this way.
D. Because singing songs is very popular all around the world.
70. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. English songs. B. Little kids. C. Languages. D. Chinese lyrics.
71. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
72. What does the writer mean at the end of the passage?
A. Teachers don’t like music in class.
B. Children find it difficult to learn foreign languages.
C. English can open the door for future research in the area.
D. You can try singing it out if you have problems in learning a language.

B. To find a part-time job they would like to do.
C. To go on to college without taking big exams.

59. In which part of the magazine could we read the passage?
A. Education. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Nature.

70. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
