Yang Zhenning, one of the most famous physicists of the 20th century, died on October 18, 2025, in Beijing at the age of 103. Born in Hefei, Anhui Province in 1922, he grew up in a scholarly family and had a strong interest in science during his early years. He studied at the National Southwest Associated University and later went abroad for further study at the University of Chicago in the United States.
In 1957, Yang and his colleague Li Zhengdao made history by winning the Nobel Prize in Physics. They received this prize for their groundbreaking work on the parity non-conservation theory (宇称不守恒理论) —a discovery that changed how scientists understood the basic laws of the universe. Beyond this, his work with Robert Mills on the Yang-Mills gauge theory (杨-米尔斯规范场论) is also considered as a cornerstone (奠基石) of modern physics, as important as Einstein’s theory of relativity (相对论).
________, Yang never forgot his motherland. In 1971, his first visit to China brought a wave of visits by overseas Chinese scientists, helping China’s science development. He advised the Chinese government on how to make basic science research stronger and paid for nearly 100 Chinese scholars to study in the US. After returning to work at Tsinghua University, he spent his later years training young scientists and improving the development of physics in China.
Yang’s life was a mix of his scientific curiosity and deep love for his country. His famous motto (座右铭), “Be honest instead of clever”, continues to encourage young people to pursue (追求) truths in science and life.

Nan Rendong was an excellent Chinese scientist who is widely known as the “father of FAST(500米口径球面射电望远镜)”, the world’s largest radio telescope. Besides his work, Nan Rendong and his team can always be an inspiration.
Nan was born in 1945 in Jilin province. In 1963,he entered Tsinghua University. After the study of technology, he stood out not only for his intelligence but also his strong will. Among his amazing moves, Nan built a 6 km great telescope, which we can now predict many international events. After graduating from Tsinghua University, Nan worked at several research centres. In 1993 he suggested building China’s first great radio telescope—a challenging project that many foreign experts doubted whether it could succeed. From 1994 to 2015, Nan led his team across China’s mountains to find the perfect location. Finally, they chose a location in a Guizhou Province.
During the process of building FAST, Nan and his team faced lots of difficulties, including bad weather, technical problems, and limited funding(有限的资金). There were times when the project nearly stopped, but Nan never lost heart and always found his way forward. When completed in 2016, FAST became China’s most important astronomical achievement. It can pick up weak radio signals from faraway in the universe, helping scientists search for stars, black holes and even the origin of the universe.
Nan passed away in 2017 because of cancer, but his influence has continued. An asteroid(小行星) was named after him in 2018. The Chinese government awarded him the national honor of “People’s Scientist” in 2019.
