I had a special experience on the Mid-Autumn Festival. In 2021, when I was eighteen, I started to study in New York. I knew a big change happened in my life. This was the first year that I spent the Mid-Autumn Festival away from my hometown—China.
To help ease (缓解) some of my homesickness (思乡之情), my friends and I decided to attend a full-moon-themed party in New York City’s Chinatown (唐人街). Although the party was a few days after the Mid-Autumn Festival, I thought it was fun. I was really touched that my friends suggested this, especially since (因为) none of them were from Asia. I showed them this fun Chinese festival. We enjoyed the mooncakes and the full moon. We sang together. I didn’t feel lonely anymore.
As a newcomer to the US, I missed my family a lot, but I knew I had to get used to (习惯于) the life away from them. It was part of growing up. On that day, I was also happy to spend the Mid-Autumn Festival with my friends because they were very kind to me. I felt great warmth from them.
If you feel homesick on the Mid-Autumn Festival like me, hanging out with close friends will be a good choice. It’s easy to become busy with school life, so having a small get-together will be a great way to take a break from your heavy schoolwork, chat with friends, and enjoy the moon on this special day.

Do you know leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣)? It’s a traditional Chinese art form. It shows the wisdom of many Chinese people through many centuries.
Leaf-vein embroidery is from Guizhou Province. This art form first appeared (出现) during the Song Dynasty. Local people used it to create beautiful artwork and even send messages to each other.
Yang Li, a master (大师) of leaf-vein embroidery, is always working on learning and teaching the skill. Leaf-vein embroidery is very difficult. First, artists must carefully choose the best leaves from special plants in the mountains. Then they need to dry the leaves for about 20 days until they become soft. Finally, they draw something beautiful on the leaves and embroider (绣) them. “Each piece takes weeks to finish,” Yang Li said. “The leaves are easy to break, so we can’t make even one small mistake.”
This traditional art form faces big challenges today. Yang Li said that only about 20 people in her city could finish the whole leaf-vein embroidery process by themselves. “Young people like modern jobs with better pay,” she said sadly. She wanted to do something for this art.
To save this tradition, Yang Li works very hard to teach others. She opened a factory in 2011 and trained more than 500 women, even many from poor areas. In 2022, she also started using the internet (网络) to show young people about leaf-vein embroidery. Her student Yang Xinyu helps her make short videos online. Yang Xinyu said, “I want to help keep it alive.”
