七、阅读理解
Zhang Xu: The Crazy Calligrapher
Zhang Xu was a calligrapher who lived during the Tang Dynasty. He was famous for his cursive script, which is a style that is highly free and expressive. People called him “Zhang the Crazy” because he often behaved strangely. He would sometimes shout and throw his brush while writing, but his works were always full of energy and beauty.
One story says that Zhang Xu was watching a dancer performing with a sword. He was inspired by her movements and used the ideas to improve his brushwork. He believed that calligraphy and dance shared the same rhythm and flow. This shows that inspiration can come from many different sources.
Another story tells that Zhang Xu often drank wine before writing. He said that wine helped him relax and free his mind. After drinking, he would create amazing works that seemed to come from a different world. His cursive script was so unique that it became a model for later calligraphers.

Three Great Calligraphers
Chinese history has produced many outstanding calligraphers. Here are three of the most celebrated ones.
Wang Xizhi (303–361) is often called the “Sage of Calligraphy”. He was born in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. His most famous work, the “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion”, is considered the greatest example of running script. His style is elegant and natural.
Zhang Xu (c. 675–750) was a Tang Dynasty calligrapher. He was known for his cursive script, which is very free and expressive. He was called “Zhang the Crazy” because of his unconventional behaviour. He often found inspiration in nature and dance.
Huai Su (737–799) was a Buddhist monk and calligrapher who also lived in the Tang Dynasty. He was famous for his wild cursive script. He was influenced by Zhang Xu and developed his own style, which is even more unrestrained. He was said to have practised calligraphy by writing on leaves and walls.
