Part 1 语境串记语篇
【英文语篇】
When the earthquake struck the city, it destroyed thousands of homes within minutes. People ran into the open air for safety.
Many residents were trapped under fallen bricks. Rescue teams made every effort to save lives. Some were buried under rubble for hours before being pulled out alive.
The heavy rain that followed swept away more houses. Thousands of families were affected and needed shelter. Emergency aid was delivered to those in need.
Despite everything, many people survived because help was on hand. The community stayed calm and worked together. From the ruins, a spirit of revival emerged — they would rebuild their city.

Part 7 阅读理解
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
When a powerful earthquake struck the city of Haicheng on February 4, 1975, it could have destroyed thousands of homes and caused terrible damage. The earthquake, measuring 7.3 in magnitude, was strong enough to sweep away entire streets and leave buildings in ruins. However, this event is remembered not for the destruction it caused, but for something remarkable that happened before it — a successful prediction that saved countless lives.
Days before the earthquake struck, unusual warning signs began to appear across the region. Small cracks formed in the ground, and water levels in wells rose and fell suddenly for no clear reason. Even more surprising, animals behaved strangely — snakes came out of their holes despite the freezing winter temperatures, and mice ran out of their underground homes as if they sensed danger approaching. Chickens refused to return to their shelters, and dogs barked endlessly through the night. Scientists and local officials noticed these patterns and grew increasingly concerned.
Based on these observations, the government took immediate action. They evacuated a large number of residents from their homes and moved them to safety in the open air. Emergency rescue teams were placed on hand, and first aid kits were prepared at various locations throughout the city. People were told to stay outside and remain calm while they waited. When the earthquake finally struck at 7:36 pm, most of the city's population was already in safe places away from buildings that could trap or bury them.
As a result, the vast majority of residents survived. Although many buildings fell into ruin and roads cracked apart, only a small number of people were injured or trapped under fallen bricks. Rescue teams still made every effort to reach those who were buried under rubble, pulling survivors out one by one with great care. The disaster affected the entire region, but the early warning had reduced the loss of life dramatically.
The Haicheng earthquake prediction remains one of the rare successes in earthquake forecasting history. It shows that paying attention to natural warning signs — from cracks in the earth to animals' unusual behaviour — can make a real difference when disaster strikes. The wisdom of listening to nature, combined with quick and united community action, turned what could have been a terrible tragedy into a story of hope and survival. Today, scientists continue their efforts to study these warning patterns, hoping to protect more communities when future earthquakes occur.
1. What is the main reason the Haicheng earthquake is remembered?
A. It was the strongest earthquake in Chinese history.
B. It was successfully predicted, saving many lives.
C. It destroyed the entire city of Haicheng.
D. It caused the longest cracks in the ground.
2. Which of the following was NOT mentioned as a warning sign before the earthquake?
A. Changes in water levels in wells.
B. Animals behaving strangely.
C. A sudden drop in temperature.
D. Small cracks appearing in the ground.
3. Why were most people safe when the earthquake struck?
A. They had already been moved to safe places outdoors.
B. The earthquake was not as strong as scientists expected.
C. All buildings were specially designed to resist earthquakes.
D. They were rescued from fallen buildings immediately after the quake.
4. What does the passage mainly suggest about earthquake prediction?
A. Scientists can now predict all earthquakes accurately.
B. Only animal behaviour can help predict earthquakes.
C. Government action is more important than scientific research.
D. Observing natural warning signs can help reduce the loss of life.
【答案】
1. B 2. C 3. A 4. D
【逐题解析】
1. B — 文章第一段明确指出海城地震因其成功预测而被人铭记("remembered not for the destruction but for a successful prediction"),而非因强度或破坏程度。
2. C — 文章第二段列举了水位变化、动物异常和地面裂缝,但未提及温度下降(temperature drop),C项为NOT mentioned的正确答案。
3. A — 文章第三段说明政府在地震前已将居民疏散到室外安全地点("moved them to safety in the open air"),而非建筑抗震或灾后救援。
4. D — 文章最后一段总结:关注自然预警信号可以减少生命损失("paying attention to natural warning signs can make a real difference"),D项符合主旨。
