It’s a famous symbol of Beijing and very important for Chinese culture. It was built over 600 years ago during the Ming Dynasty. Back then, emperors would go there to pray for good harvests. The Temple of Heaven is really big—it’s as big as more than 300 soccer fields! It has lots of trees and old buildings. Walking there is like traveling back in time. The biggest and coolest buildings are the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests(祈年殿) and the Circular Mound(圜丘). The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a huge round building with a blue roof symbolizing the Heaven. This is where the emperor prayed to heaven, hoping for good crops and peace. The Circular Mound is a large, open round altar where the emperor did special ceremonies every winter solstice (冬至日) to ask for heaven’s blessings. The buildings at the Temple of Heaven are made to show harmony between the sky and the earth, which is an old idea that the sky is round and the earth is square. The buildings are also colourful: blue stands for the sky, red means importance and good luck, and yellow is the colour of royalty. There’s also a really cool spot called the Echo Wall. It’s a smooth, curved wall about 200 metres long. If you whisper at one end, you can hear your voice at the other end—isn’t that amazing? In 1998, the Temple of Heaven was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which means it’s recognized as a treasure all over the world. This is not just because it’s old and looks cool, but also because it shows a lot about Chinese culture and spirit. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests The Circular Mound the Echo Wall Read the text, and answer the following questions. 1. Why did ancient emperors visit the Temple of Heaven? 2. What special thing can visitors experience at the Echo Wall? 3. Why was the Temple of Heaven listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998? 【强化提升练习】 一、阅读理解 Where to Eat in Bangkok Bangkok is a highly desirable destination for food lovers. Emperors went there to pray for good harvests, good crops, peace and heaven’s blessings, and hold special ceremonies on the winter solstice. 2. What special thing can visitors experience at the Echo Wall? If visitors whisper at one end of the wall, people standing at the other end can clearly hear their voice. 3. Why was the Temple of Heaven listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998?
