(2026·泰州一模)Norman Lear, a genius producer and screenwriter, passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 101.“Lear's hit comedy shows changed television forever,” said Darnel Hunt, a leading artist on TV.
Lear grew up in an ordinary family in Connecticut, where an unexpected accident brought about his father's business collapse. So he had to drop out of college and joined the army.In his late 20s, he moved to Los Angeles where he struggled hard for several years, selling furniture door to door.Later on, unsatisfied with his life, he eventually turned to writing for comedy act.
By 1971, when he was almost 50, Lear had produced and directed some shows, among which was the hit show All in the Family. In the beginning, it didn't get on the air smoothly. However, once it did, this show made it to the top 10 for eight of its nine seasons, promising Lear's life was to change.
This successful show was just the beginning of Lear's dominating position in comedy shows. Then came The Jeffersons, about a family on its way up.It ran for eleven seasons, one of the longest running comedy shows on television, becoming another successful story. When interviewed about the hit of his shows, Lear said, “Our team read two or three newspapers a day, paid a lot of attention to our families, and came in to talk about everything that was affecting us in our daily lives.” Therefore, it came as no surprise that viewers had a sense of Lear's own family after watching All in the Family.
“Routinely, Lear's shows might get fifty or sixty million viewers. He was in direct contact with the living rooms and families of the country,” says Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center.“Lear did everything with humor and sympathy.”

(2026·浙江名校联盟第一次联考)Here's a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B.This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. A powerful member didn't care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man's attitude and paved the way for their friendship. “He that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (不协调). It's difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don't like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,”we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn't explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (有亲和力的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It's in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don't know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.

Turning the Page: Steps to Create a
New Chapter in Your Life
Life is like a journey with ups and downs. What matters is the way you tackle each situation. 1.________ Here's how you can create a new chapter in your life.
•Learn from others.
There is one common mistake that many of us make: when dealing with a problem or situation, we try to go through all of it on our own. 2.________ When you start learning from and depending on others, you notice the different patterns which made them successful.
•Try everything in your hands.
Sometimes we might feel that we have tried so hard and still nothing is working out for us. I know that situation as I have been there. I would say this one thing to you: giving up is easy, but continuing with the pain is hard but worth it. The only workable solution that I would offer you is to think outside the box. Try solutions that you never ever dreamed of. 3.________
•Let go of your past.
We must forgive ourselves so that we can easily begin the next chapter. We did our best at that time. It was certainly the right thing to do but it didn't work out and that wasn't your fault. Forgive yourself and begin a new. 4.________ It is what makes us humans.
•5.________
Most people get busy doing the things that don't get them anywhere. In stressful situations, people even seek unhealthy ways to relieve the stress. Remember to live in reality to make sensible and favorable choices for yourself. Don't follow the path to anger and destroy what is good for you. Picture your goals in your mind and make sensible steps towards them with each passing day. Let nothing stand in your way.

B.Everyone makes mistakes.
C.Live in the present moment.
