(2026·沈阳市郊联体高三考试)The needs of plus-size consumers had long been the__elephant__in__the__room of the fashion industry until body positivity and fat acceptance movements promoted the slogan that large-bodied people are not those who are left behind. This size-inclusive trend has become so popular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a result, fashion brands have finally decided to extend their size ranges. In 2022,the plus-size market grew twice as fast as the standard size market in both North America and the UK.
Yet,many consumers say fashion brands broadening their ranges are not truly inclusive.“Inclusive sizing means that all bodies are included in fashion, not just the ones who fit in standard sizes,” says Marie Southard Ospina,a UK-based journalist who covers body-image issues.“However, what many designers do right now is pick a number that they think is big enough to include plus sizes and stop. This is even more disrespectful.”
Researchers also criticize that some brands are just taking advantage of the trend.“Brands that used to promote so-called perfect bodies in their advertisements are now trying to get in on the trend by adding a few sizes. It doesn't feel like they really care about plus-size people,” says Tom Burgess, analyst in the fashion industry.“If brands had cared about large-bodied consumers, then it wouldn't have taken until now to acknowledge that they exist,” he says.“It gives the impression that companies are just trying to gain a share of the market without a real commitment to the community.”
The fashion industry must go beyond merely producing clothing in a particular range of sizes if it hopes to succeed in a body-diverse world. The whole industry has to connect on a personal level with consumers. That involves showing shoppers that they are seen, understood and important to brands.“Consumers care about values, and so they want to buy from brands that reflect the values they believe in.Everyone should enjoy the same range of fashion options,”says Ludovica Cesareo, assistant professor of Marketing at Lehigh University College of Business in the US.
1.What does the underlined part “the elephant in the room” mean in the first paragraph?
A.The hot issue that is valued.
B.The obvious truth that is ignored.
C.The important principle that is recognized.
D.The common phenomenon that is criticized.
因此,“the elephant in the room”指的是一个长期存在却被有意回避的明显问题。
2.According to Marie, why do consumers say some fashion brands are not truly inclusive?
A.Because they pick sizes randomly.
B.Because they treat designers disrespectfully.
C.Because they offer limited plus sizes.
D.Because they haven't broadened standard sizes.
根据第二段中的“However, what many designers do...to include plus sizes and stop.”
3.For what do researchers mainly criticize some brands?
A.Their designs. B.Their motivations.
C.Their quality. D.Their advertisements.
根据第三段中的“Brands that used to...really care about plus-size people”及“companies are just trying...the community”可知,过去在广告中推崇所谓完美身材的这些公司只是借趋势牟利,并未对大码群体作出真正的承诺。
4.What does the last paragraph imply?
A.Buyers deserve fashion that respects their values.
B.Consumers prefer brands with personalized styles.
C.Brands should catch up with the size-inclusive trend.
D.A good brand image is critical in the fashion industry.

Born in Chengdu in 1915 to Canadian churchman parents, Crook returned to China after completing her master's degree in anthropology at the University of Toronto. Her life was deeply connected with China's history and development.
Crook is best known for her pioneering work in English language education in China. In 1948, she accepted an invitation to teach at the Central Foreign Affairs School, which later became Beijing Foreign Studies University. She spent over six decades there, contributing to forming China's first university English curriculum and training generations of English teachers. Her books, such as Revolution in a Chinese Village, Ten Mile Inn and Xinglongchang, Field Notes of a Village Called Prosperity, offer detailed and intimate portraits of Chinese rural life during the revolutionary period. These works have provided valuable insights into China's social transformation and have been influential in shaping Western understanding of China.
Crook's commitment to China extended beyond her professional life. She and her husband, David Crook, supported various social projects, including setting up clinics, schools, and scholarships for poor students. Even after retiring at the age of 66, she continued to contribute by returning to rural areas to support education and development initiatives.
