(2026·安徽名校联盟高三诊断)In Hungary, restorers are working to save the historic book collection of the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma, a UNESCO World Heritage site, after discovering a serious insect infestation (虫害). The entire collection of 400,000 books is now being treated, as drugstore beetles—also known as bread beetles—have been found throughout the library. These insects, usually found in dry foods like grains and spices, are also drawn to the glue used in old books.
The infestation was first noticed during a routine cleaning, when staff saw unusual dust and small holes in several books. Closer inspection revealed that the beetles had bored into the pages. “This is the worst infestation we've ever seen,” said Zsofia EditHajdu, the lead restorer. “Since it has spread across many parts of the library, we have to treat every single book.”
The treatment process begins by placing books into boxes and sealing them inside large plastic bags. The air is then removed and replaced with pure nitrogen. After six weeks without oxygen, all insects should be killed. Once disinfected, each book will be examined and cleaned by hand. Those with damage will be set aside for later repair. Fortunately, the Abbey's oldest and rarest volumes, stored separately, were not affected.
The Pannonhalma Abbey, founded in 996, holds Hungary's oldest book collection and many early written records. Located in the country's northwest, it has long been a major religious and cultural center in Central Europe. Library director Ilona Asvanyi warned that any damage to the collection would be a loss to Hungary's cultural and historical heritage. Experts believe climate change may have played a role in the incursion,__as warmer temperatures help insects survive and spread. “We used to worry more about mold,” one restorer said. “But now, because of global warming, insect problems are becoming more common.”
The Abbey hopes to reopen the library early next year after the restoration is complete.
