At just 14 years old, Mike attracts a lot of eyes with a beach clean-up activity. On April 20, 2024, he and many volunteers started a five-week activity to pick up rubbish from five beaches. He has collected about 2 million bottles from beaches, lakes and rivers since he was 2 years old.
“The rubbish ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Mike told us. “I really can’t endure the pollution any more. Picking up a piece of rubbish may save a turtle’s life.”
Mike first learned about the influence of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC太平洋海洋哺乳动物中心) in Laguna Beach. Watching the videos of ocean pollution there encouraged him to think about what he could do to help save them.
From a young age, he has developed a love for recycling. He kept collecting rubbish and bottles for a long time. One day, Mike knew from the workers in PMMC that saving sea animals needed money. “Why not sell the bottles?” he thought. In 2024, Mike handed a $10,000 check to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of rubbish and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Mike has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about what kids can do for the protection of sea animals. He said, “It’s meaningful. I’ll keep on doing it.”
26. How long did the beach clean-up activity last in 2024?
A. Thirty-five days. B. Five days. C. Seven days. D. Thirty days.

A. Creative. B. Honest. C. Kind. D. Polite.

28. 根据第三段“Watching the videos of ocean pollution there encouraged him to think about what he could do to help save them.”可知,是观看海洋污染的视频促使他思考能做些什么来帮助拯救海洋动物。
29. 根据“Picking up a piece of rubbish may save a turtle’s life.”以及“Mike handed a $10,000 check to the PMMC…”可知,Mike通过捡拾垃圾来拯救海龟的生命,并将卖废品换来的巨款捐赠给海洋哺乳动物中心,这些具体的行为说明他是一个非常有爱心且善良的男孩。

Being green means protecting the environment in our daily life. The best way to do this is buying green products. But how do we know if a product is really green? We need to think about everything of the product.
First, we should look at the materials of the products. Green products are made of natural materials. This is good for our health.
Second, where a product is made and where we buy it are also important. We should try to buy local products, especially food. We can order directly from local farmers. Buying from shops near our homes is also a good idea, because we can go there without driving a car.
Packaging (包装) is another thing we should think about. We should choose products that have glass, paper or other packaging that can be reused or recycled. We should also try to buy products that have less packaging or no packaging at all.
The greenest thing we can do is not to buy unnecessary products. We should only buy things we really need, like food and clothes. If we don’t need something, we should leave it in the shop. This saves money, reduces waste, and helps keep the planet healthy.
All in all, by buying green products, we can help make our planet a better place to live on.

A Greener City, a Better Life
Nowadays, our environment is getting worse. There are many problems in our city. For example, some people drop litter everywhere. Also, there is too much pollution from cars.
To make our city greener, we should take action right now. First, we can plant more trees to make the air cleaner. Second, it is a good idea to ride bikes to school instead of taking cars. Third, we should remember to recycle waste.
In a word, everyone should play a part in protecting the environment. I hope our city will become more beautiful and we will have a better life.
