How will we live a colorful life?
How will we live a colorful life?
Here are some meaningful ways to enrich (充实) our lives.
Volunteer Our Time and Donate Our Things
Sometimes what we can do to make our lives more meaningful is to make a difference to someone else’s life, such as spending time out of our week volunteering. If we’re not available during weekdays, try on weekends. Another choice is to give things that we aren’t using to people who are in need for free.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors
If we’re stressed out at home, it will be amazing that a quick walk outside can be good for us. Not only does a quick trip out of the house cheer us up, but also it is a great chance for exercise. So go out, walk or do any outdoor physical activity we enjoy.
Spend Time with Others
We can hang out with our friends or spend time with our family members. If there’s no one around that we’d like to spend time with, don’t forget that we always have the choice of making new friends. We might choose to do this in a club or at a concert. Don’t be afraid to get close to people we meet!
Be Creative
Everyone can create something. If we are interested in music, then try making some new music. If we love writing, then try writing an article. The possibilities are endless.

Passage2
(25-26八年级下·吉林长春·期中)Hobbies not only make us happy, but also keep our brains healthy. Many scientists believe hobbies can help people stay active mentally as they grow older. A Canadian study even found that long-term hobbies may improve brain structure and memory.
The research studied 58 people who love bird-watching. Half were experts who had spent many years watching birds, while the other half were beginners. Both groups included people from their 20s to their 70s and had similar educational backgrounds. Scientists wanted to see whether hobbies could make a difference to the brain.
During brain scans, volunteers saw a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then, they had to choose the correct bird from four different pictures. The test was repeated 72 times using 18 kinds of birds. Some birds were local, while others came from different countries and were less familiar.
The expert group correctly identified 83 percent of local birds and 61 percent of non-local birds. Beginners only got 44 percent right for both. The scans also showed important differences in brain structure. Scientists found that the areas responsible for attention and working memory were more compact in the experts. In other words, these brain areas were more closely connected and could work more efficiently, even in older people. These areas also “lit up” when experts tried to identify non-local birds, but this did not happen in beginners’ brains.
Creative hobbies, such as music and dancing, are also good for the brain. A 2025 study found that dancers’ brains appeared over seven years younger than their actual age. AI research also showed that even 30 hours of creative learning could help improve brain health. Scientists believe creativity shapes not only culture but also biology.

Passage 9
What do young people like to do in their free time? If you think they are all playing video games or watching short videos on their phones, you might be wrong. In 2026, many young people are turning to something quite different — “grandma hobbies.”
“Grandma hobbies” is a fun name for traditional activities like needlepoint (刺绣) and gardening. These are things that people’s grandmothers used to enjoy. But now, Gen Z (people born after 1997) are falling in love with them.
Emma MacTaggart, 26, is a good example. She used to work long hours in banking. After work, she would just look through her phone for hours — a habit called “getting lost in her phone.” To change this, she and her roommates decided to try needlepoint. Soon, they became “fully obsessed (着迷的).” Emma said it was so relaxing that they spent almost all their free time making needlepoint works instead of looking at a screen.
These old hobbies help young people reduce stress and feel relaxed. When they finish a gift or a dish, they feel proud and successful. Social media helps them become more popular. Young people share their works online and make friends. Some even turn their hobbies into businesses. Take Anna Weare, a 31-year-old blacksmith (铁匠) as an example — people now wait a year for her handmade products.
So next time you see a young person blacksmithing, don’t be surprised. It’s the newest cool thing to do!
1.What are “grandma hobbies” in this passage?
2.Who are interested in “grandma hobbies” according to paragraph 2?
3.Why did Emma MacTaggart start to try needlepoint?
4.How do these old hobbies help young people? (Give at least two things.)
5.What do you think of “grandma hobbies”? And why?

Enjoy the Great Outdoors
If we’re stressed out at home, it will be amazing that a quick walk outside can be good for us. Not only does a quick trip out of the house cheer us up, but also it is a great chance for exercise. So go out, walk or do any outdoor physical activity we enjoy.
Spend Time with Others
We can hang out with our friends or spend time with our family members. If there’s no one around that we’d like to spend time with, don’t forget that we always have the choice of making new friends.
