The Himalayas
The Himalayas are the highest mountain range on Earth, stretching across five countries in Asia. They are often called the “roof of the world” because of their incredible height. 1.______________ The temperature can drop to -40°C at the highest peaks, and the air is very thin, making it hard to breathe.
Despite the harsh conditions, the Himalayas are home to many unique plants and animals. 2.______________ The snow leopard, for example, is one of the most endangered animals in the region. It has thick fur and powerful legs that help it survive the cold and climb steep cliffs. The Himalayan tahr is a type of goat that lives on the rocky slopes.
Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, is located in the Himalayas. 3.______________ Thousands of climbers have attempted to reach its summit, but many have failed due to extreme weather and altitude sickness.
The Himalayas are also the source of many major rivers in Asia, including the Ganges, the Indus and the Yangtze. 4.______________ However, climate change is causing the glaciers to melt, which threatens the water supply for millions of people.
Many organizations are working to protect the Himalayas. 5.______________ They also educate local communities about the importance of conservation.
A. The snow and ice on the mountains are melting faster than before.
B. These animals have adapted to the extreme environment over thousands of years.
C. These rivers provide water for more than 1.5 billion people living downstream.
D. The climate here is extremely cold and windy.
E. They set up nature reserves and monitor the wildlife population.
F. Every year, millions of tourists come to see the beautiful mountains.

Part 1: Read and Explore
High mountain ecosystems are among the most fragile and sensitive environments on Earth. As global temperatures continue to rise, these ecosystems are experiencing significant changes.
One of the most visible effects is the melting of glaciers. In the Alps, for example, glaciers have lost about half of their volume since 1900. This has serious consequences. Rivers that depend on glacial meltwater are becoming drier in summer, affecting agriculture and drinking water supplies. The disappearance of glaciers also increases the risk of landslides and floods.
Another major change is the upward movement of vegetation. As temperatures warm, plants that used to grow at lower altitudes are moving higher up the mountains. This has caused problems for the animals that live in the higher areas. The mountain hare, for instance, relies on its white winter coat to hide from predators. But with less snow cover, it becomes more visible and is easier to catch.
The marmot, a rodent that lives in the mountains, is also affected. Warmer temperatures allow its predators to move higher, increasing the pressure on marmot populations. Some birds that breed in the mountains are also arriving earlier in spring and laying eggs sooner.
To address these challenges, scientists have set up monitoring stations across mountain ranges. They are tracking changes in temperature, snowfall and vegetation. They are also studying how animals are adapting to the new conditions. The data collected helps governments develop better conservation plans. Many national parks have been established to protect these fragile ecosystems, and visitors are required to follow strict rules to minimize their impact.
Part 2: Skills Challenge
Task 1: Understand the Story (基础理解)
1. How much of the glacier volume in the Alps has been lost since 1900?
A. About a quarter. B. About half. C. About three quarters. D. Nearly all.
2. What problem do mountain hares face as snow cover decreases?
A. They cannot find enough food. B. They are more visible to predators.
C. They have to move to lower areas. D. They cannot find mates.
Task 2: In-depth Comprehension (深层理解)
3. Why does the upward movement of vegetation cause problems for high-altitude animals?
4. What are scientists doing to address the challenges facing mountain ecosystems? (Give two actions.)
Task 3: Express Your Thoughts (表达观点)
5. What else do you think we can do to protect mountain ecosystems besides the methods mentioned in the passage? Use your own thoughts to answer.
