W: I did well on the last test, and I know I’ll do well this time too. But my soccer team just made it to the final game. I need to practice! If I don’t practice, I could be the reason we don’t win! I remember when you played basketball last spring, you guys were always winning and you never had time to study!
M: Yeah, we were really good, but I don’t want to play basketball anymore. The practice takes up too much time. My grades are more important to me. Since you can’t study after school, would you want to study together during lunch? There’s an empty classroom on the first floor.
W: Why not study in the library? There are big tables we can use, and it’s in the same building. Just two floors above.
M: The library is too busy even though it’s quiet. I just remembered there are study rooms on the second floor. Let’s go there instead.

To celebrate it, we are giving away gift cards worth $30 to any customer who walks in and guesses how much each bag of shopping weighs. Each bag has a mixture of electrical goods, frozen meats and chocolates. We will be running the game from June 24 to June 26. This is a great advertisement for our company and we will have a professional photographer here to take photos of you and happy customers. The bags and a list will be put on a red table at the front of the store. Customers will need to look at the list and guess the weight of the bag they choose and write their answers on a piece of paper. During the game, I’d like each of you to spend one hour each day in front of the store trying to get as many people to take part as possible. Customers are only allowed one guess, but they are more than welcome to tell their friends and family about the competition so they can also take part.

Steve Grant, a Hartford Courant reporter, writes “armchair adventure” stories about his outdoor experiences to encourage readers to get active.
But when Grant was given his new task, a series on hiking the Appalachian Trail, he knew he couldn’t do it alone. It would take at least six months, and he had a wife and kids to think about. So he got other newspapers to join him. The reporters from these papers decided to hike the Trail in relay (接力) style, with each paper covering the part closest to its circulation area (发行区域), and then sharing their stories with the other newspapers involved.
Part of the goal of this adventure, according to John Harmon, who served as a hiking coach for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was to bring some nature back to a world that is becoming increasingly unnatural.
Nine reporters hiked the whole 2,155-mile Appalachian Trail, starting in March and ending this month. In addition to stories of the Trail, the series has touched on serious issues like clear-cutting forests and the struggle of national parks in face of overuse and damage.
But some question the newsworthiness of adventure reporting. “Some people in the newsroom don’t think this is real journalism (新闻工作),” said Vic Kodis, coordinating editor of the project. “They say it’s partly an excuse to address these issues in a way that attracts readers’ interest. If we wrote news stories about these topics, we wouldn’t have anybody reading.”
But people do seem to be reading “An Appalachian Adventure”. Kodis said he gets an average of 125 calls a week from readers commenting on the series.
The most impressive achievement of the adventure may have been getting large newspapers to pool their resources and talents. Kodis said he had feared there would be a shortage of teamwork, but somehow reporters from all the papers managed to work well together after hiking the first 30 miles of the Trail together.
24. Why did Grant ask other newspapers for help?
A. He was afraid to hike alone. B. He didn’t have enough money.
C. He couldn’t do it all by himself. D. He wanted more stories about the hike.
25. What is one purpose of the Appalachian Trail adventure?
A. To encourage readers to do outdoor activities.
B. To share Grant’s experiences with readers.
C. To promote hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
D. To raise awareness of environmental issues.
26. What do some people think of adventure reporting?
A. It is not real news. B. It is a waste of money.
C. It is an excuse to spend time in nature. D. It covers fewer topics than they expected.
27. What did Kodis worry about at first?
A. Reporters couldn’t finish the hike. B. Reporters wouldn’t work together.
C. The hike wasn’t worth a try. D. The relay style wasn’t workable.
C 25. D 26. A 27. B
根据第二段中“But when Grant was given his new task, a series on hiking the Appalachian Trail, he knew he couldn’t do it alone. It would take at least six months, and he had a wife and kids to think about. So he got other newspapers to join him.(但当格兰特接到新的任务——撰写一个关于徒步阿巴拉契亚小径的系列报道时,他知道自己无法独自完成。这至少需要六个月时间,而他还要考虑妻子和孩子。于是,他邀请了其他报社加入他的行列)”可知,Grant邀请其他报纸加入,是因为这项任务至少需要六个月,他还要照顾妻儿,一个人无法独立完成。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Nine reporters hiked the whole 2,155-mile Appalachian Trail, starting in March and ending this month. In addition to stories of the Trail, the series has touched on serious issues like clear-cutting forests and the struggle of national parks in face of overuse and damage.(九名记者从三月开始,到本月结束,徒步完成了全长2155英里的阿巴拉契亚小径。
根据最后一段中“Kodis said he had feared there would be a shortage of teamwork, but somehow reporters from all the papers managed to work well together after hiking the first 30 miles of the Trail together.(科迪斯说,他担心团队合作会出现不足,但不知怎的,所有报纸的记者们在共同徒步完成前30英里后,竟然能够很好地协作起来)”可知,Kodis起初最担心的是来自不同报社的记者们无法团结协作。
C
Home cooks like it. Restaurants include it in new dishes. It’s chili crisp (油辣椒), and it’s highly popular in the food world. The Chinese condiment (辛辣调味品) is a kitchen powerhouse known for its many different uses and heat. But how did the must-have condiment get started?
Originally from Central and South America, chilies were unknown in China until around the 16th century, when an increase in exploration and trade brought chilies to the Chinese mainland.
The first written record of the chili in China dates from 1591. Gao Lian, who lived near what is now Shanghai and wrote plays, wasn’t all that excited about it as a condiment or a medicine. Instead, he used it as a decorative plant. But while wealthy Chinese enjoyed chilies in their decorative gardens, the masses began eating and enjoying the plants. By 1765, chilies were widely used in dishes. There’s even a recipe for chili crisp in The Harmonious Cauldron, the earliest Chinese cookbook to include chilies.
Unlike other spices (调味品), chilies weren’t farmed and traded as goods. Instead, they were passed from person to person and grown in small fields, falling into the hands of skilled farmers who developed even better chilies over time. These chilies — and the condiment made by cooking them in oil — became must-have cooking materials all over China, becoming so widespread that they were considered part of the nation’s identity.
By the 20th century, chilies cooked in oil were a standard in homes and restaurants. But though the condiment was brought to the United States and served at Chinese restaurants, it was not until 1997 that chili crisp was produced and sold widely. That year, Tao Huabi began selling Lao Gan Ma Spicy Chili Crisp from China’s Guizhou Province. Over time, chili crisp has built a strong following around the world.
“You can learn a lot about a culture through food,” said Brian Dott, author of The Chile Pepper in China: A Cultural Biography. It seems the condiment won’t stop bringing the heat any time soon.
28. What did Gao Lian think of the chili?
A. It was a powerful medicine.
B. It was a must-have condiment.
C. It was a popular food.
D. It was a nice decoration.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The introduction of chilies to China.
B. The development of chilies in China.
C. The influence of chilies on Chinese trade.
D. The popularity of chilies among wealthy Chinese.
30. What did Tao Huabi do in 1997?
A. She brought chili crisp to market.
B. She wrote a cookbook about chilies.
C. She used chili crisp in her restaurants.
D. She planted chilies throughout Guizhou.
31. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Chilies were first used as food by wealthy people in China.
B. Lao Gan Ma helped make chili crisp known worldwide.
C. Chili crisp is only popular in Chinese restaurants.
D. Chilies have been in China for over 600 years.
D 29. B 30. A 31. B
根据第三段“Gao Lian, who lived near what is now Shanghai and wrote plays, wasn’t all that excited about it as a condiment or a medicine. Instead, he used it as a decorative plant.(高濂住在现在上海附近,他写戏曲,他对它作为调味品或药物并不那么兴奋。相反,他把它当作装饰植物使用)”可知,高濂将辣椒用作装饰。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Unlike other spices (调味品), chilies weren’t farmed and traded as goods. Instead, they were passed from person to person and grown in small fields, falling into the hands of skilled farmers who developed even better chilies over time. These chilies — and the condiment made by cooking them in oil — became must-have cooking materials all over China, becoming so widespread that they were considered part of the nation’s identity.(和其他调味品不同,辣椒并未作为商品种植和交易。相反,辣椒在民户间传播,在小块田地里种植,落到经验丰富的农民手中,随着时间推移逐步培育出了更优良的辣椒。这些辣椒,以及用油榨制而成的辛辣调味品,成为了全中国必不可少的烹饪原料,分布之广让它被认为是中国民族身份认同的一部分)”可知,第四段主要介绍了辣椒传入中国后在民间逐步发展、普及的过程,因此本段主要内容是辣椒在中国的发展。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“it was not until 1997 that chili crisp was produced and sold widely. That year, Tao Huabi began selling Lao Gan Ma Spicy Chili Crisp from China’s Guizhou Province.(直到1997年,油辣椒才开始大规模生产和售卖。同年,陶华碧开始售卖产自中国贵州的老干妈油辣椒)”可知,1997年陶华碧将油辣椒推向市场大规模售卖。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“That year, Tao Huabi began selling Lao Gan Ma Spicy Chili Crisp from China’s Guizhou Province. Over time, chili crisp has built a strong following around the world.(同年,陶华碧开始售卖产自中国贵州的老干妈油辣椒。久而久之,油辣椒在全球收获了大批爱好者)”可推知,老干妈品牌推动了油辣椒在世界范围内的知名度。
D
Many of the existing efforts to protect species across the United States depend on information about where these species currently live. But as climate change changes the existing conditions, most animals and plants will need to move to cooler or more suitable environments to survive. How does this influence efforts to protect biodiversity?
A new study has found that many species of animals and plants will likely need to move under climate change and that conservation (保护) efforts will also need to change to be effective. “We are going to need to protect different places if we want to protect biodiversity in the future,” said lead author Joshua Lawler. “We need to think about where species will go as the climate changes, and then plan for that. The business-as-usual planning process is not viable.”
The research team found that unless climate change influences are considered directly, 14% of species would not have a suitable place to live under climate change. This is because current protections focus on where species are today, not where they will need to be in the future as temperatures warm.
With climate change advancing, there’s a pressing need to develop plans and carry them out, protecting important landscapes, the researchers said.
“Climate change effects that were originally projected to be many years in the future are starting to become observable in the present day,” said co-author John Withey. “We need to take action as soon as possible, thinking about where species may need to go under climate change, and providing corridors (通道) through which they can move.”
The authors hope this study will be helpful for land conservation organizations to determine which areas should be considered key for conservation. While their study points out parts of the country that will need more conservation attention under climate change, they warn that the paper isn’t meant to help determine specific new parks to protect.
“This paper is pointing out that we might be missing opportunities or places where conservation is going to be needed in the face of climate change,” Withey said. “Another hope is that we can start determining which places would protect species and would allow species to move without increasing our costs too much.”
32. What does the underlined word “viable” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Possible. B. Avoidable. C. Workable. D. Challenging.
33. What is the problem with current protections?
A. They only consider present species locations. B. They lack support from the government.
C. They do not include enough species. D. They are too costly to manage.
34. What do the authors of the study hope to achieve?
A. Developing specific new parks. B. Reducing the cost of conservation.
C. Guiding future conservation work. D. Drawing attention to climate change.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Adapting conservation measures to climate change B. Great influences of climate change on species
C. New challenges in biodiversity conservation D. Exploring conservation efforts in the US
C 33. A 34. C 35. A
根据第二段中““We are going to need to protect different places if we want to protect biodiversity in the future,” said lead author Joshua Lawler. “We need to think about where species will go as the climate changes, and then plan for that. The business-as-usual planning process is not viable.”(主要作者约书亚·劳勒说:“如果我们想在未来保护生物多样性,就需要保护不同的地方。我们需要考虑物种在气候变化时会去哪里,并据此制定计划。这种按部就班的规划流程是不viable。”)”可知,Lawler指出未来的保护工作需关注物种未来的栖息地,按部就班的常规规划行不通了。由此推知,viable意为“可行的,能奏效的”。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“This is because current protections focus on where species are today, not where they will need to be in the future as temperatures warm.(这是因为目前的保护措施关注的是物种当下的所在地,而非随着气温升高它们在未来需要去往的地方)”可知,当前保护措施的问题在于仅考虑了物种目前的分布位置,忽视了其未来的迁徙需求。
根据倒数第二段中“The authors hope this study will be helpful for land conservation organizations to determine which areas should be considered key for conservation.(作者希望这项研究能帮助土地保护组织确定哪些区域应被视为保护重点)”以及最后一段中“Another hope is that we can start determining which places would protect species and would allow species to move without increasing our costs too much.(另一个希望是,我们可以开始确定哪些地方可以保护物种,并允许物种在不增加太多成本的情况下迁徙)”可知,作者希望通过研究结果为未来的保护工作提供方向指引,即指导未来的保护实践。
根据第二段中“A new study has found that many species of animals and plants will likely need to move under climate change and that conservation efforts will also need to change to be effective.(一项新研究发现,许多动植物在气候变化下可能需要迁徙,而保护工作也需要随之调整才能有效)”并结合全文内容可知,文章主要论述了随着气候变化,物种需要迁移,现有的保护措施必须随之调整才能有效保护生物多样性。

Having high self-control is often seen as a good thing. It’s believed to be key to success in many aspects of life. But as suggested by a theory published by Professor Thomas Lynch, high self-control may not always be a good thing. ____36____
Most of us are probably more familiar with what problematic undercontrol looks like. People who are highly undercontrolled may struggle to control their emotions. This can negatively affect their relationships, work and health. There are many treatments that can help undercontrolled people manage their emotions and increase self-control.
____37____ This may be because overcontrolled traits — such as the ability to make plans and stick to them, pursuing perfection, and being in control of emotions — are often highly regarded in our society. But when overcontrol becomes an issue, it can be damaging in many areas of life.
Highly overcontrolled people may struggle to adapt to change. They may be less open to new experiences and criticism, and be very set in their ways. ____38____ Together, these characteristics may make a person more likely to experience loneliness. This may finally cause their mental health to worsen.
To receive suitable help, a person must first be correctly identified as highly overcontrolled. ____39____ It involves a few questionnaires and an interview that must be conducted by a specially trained clinician This can slow down research. I am working on developing a simplified assessment method that will help identify problematic overcontrol quickly. This will make it easier for researchers to continue studying overcontrol, too.
High self-control is typically admired, and highly overcontrolled people are rarely open about their struggles. That’s why problematic overcontrol can go unnoticed for a long time. ____40____
A. Unfortunately, overcontrol isn’t talked about as much.
B. For some, it could be linked to certain mental health problems.
C. The current assessment of overcontrol is quite long and complex.
D. Continued work in this field will make it easier for them to get help.
E. Every single one of us leans more toward one of two personality styles.
F. This flexibility helps us deal with life’s challenges in a constructive way.
G. They may also use fewer gestures and try to hide their emotions at any cost.
B 37. A 38. G 39. C 40. D
上文“Having high self-control is often seen as a good thing. It’s believed to be key to success in many aspects of life. But as suggested by a theory published by Professor Thomas Lynch, high self-control may not always be a good thing.(高度自控通常被视作一件好事,人们认为它是生活诸多领域取得成功的关键。但托马斯・林奇教授发表的一项理论表明,高度自控未必总是好事。)”引出全文核心观点——高度自控存在弊端。选项B“For some, it could be linked to certain mental health problems.(对部分人而言,高度自控可能和特定心理健康问题相关。)”
后文“This may be because overcontrolled traits — such as the ability to make plans and stick to them, pursuing perfection, and being in control of emotions — are often highly regarded in our society.(这或许是因为过度自控的特质,比如制定并坚持计划、追求完美、克制情绪,在社会中往往备受推崇。)” A“Unfortunately, overcontrol isn’t talked about as much.(遗憾的是,人们很少谈及过度自控。)”
上文“Highly overcontrolled people may struggle to adapt to change. They may be less open to new experiences and criticism, and be very set in their ways.(过度自控的人难以适应变化,不愿接纳新体验与批评,行事固执。)” 后文“Together, these characteristics may make a person more likely to experience loneliness.(这些特质叠加在一起,容易让人产生孤独感。)” G“They may also use fewer gestures and try to hide their emotions at any cost.(他们肢体语言匮乏,还会不惜一切隐藏自身情绪。)”
上文“To receive suitable help, a person must first be correctly identified as highly overcontrolled.(想要获得合适的疏导帮助,首先要准确判断一个人是否属于过度自控。)” 后文“It involves a few questionnaires and an interview that must be conducted by a specially trained clinician.(检测流程包含多份问卷与专业临床医师的面谈。)” C“The current assessment of overcontrol is quite long and complex.(当下针对过度自控的评估流程冗长复杂。)”
上文“High self-control is typically admired, and highly overcontrolled people are rarely open about their struggles. That’s why problematic overcontrol can go unnoticed for a long time.(高度自控受人推崇,过度自控者很少倾诉自身困扰,这就导致有问题的过度自控长期被忽视。)” D“Continued work in this field will make it easier for them to get help.(该领域持续开展的相关研究,会让这类人群更容易获得帮助。)”

Benny was walking in the woods when he spotted something shiny from a distance. He approached the strange-looking object. Upon closer inspection, Benny realized that it was a weather-worn balloon. He also noticed that there was something attached to it — a child’s Christmas wish list.
The note, written in the untidy handwriting of a child, read, “My name is Laura. I am six years old. This year I have been good. I would like chocolates, a doll and a dog. Love, Laura.”
Reading the wish list awakened old memories for Benny. As a child, he had always written similar lists to Santa (圣诞老人), hoping to find his presents under the Christmas tree, but those hopes had been ruined each year when Santa never responded. Holding Laura’s note excitedly, a plan formed in Benny’s mind. He wanted to find Laura and make her wishes come true, so she would not experience the same disappointment he had.
He remembered hearing stories of many people finding their long-lost relatives through social media. Benny posted a picture of the balloon and the Christmas list on social media. To ensure that his efforts would bear fruit, he even posted a video of him appealing to the online community to help him locate Laura. At first, he was not confident that the strategy would work. Gradually, he saw the number of people sharing his post inch into the hundreds.
Despite the positive start, Benny’s hopes of finding Laura without any details grew weaker with each passing day. He felt like he was looking for a needle in a haystack (干草堆).
Fortunately, he found a ray of hope when he received a message from Diana, a friend of Laura’s mother. Diana shared that Laura’s family had been struggling to make ends meet and her mother wanted to bring some cheer to their home, so she suggested sending a letter to Santa by balloon.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Together, Benny and Diana worked out a plan to surprise Laura and bring her wishes to fruition.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Together, Benny and Diana worked out a plan to surprise Laura and bring her wishes to fruition. Benny went to the store, and selected a box filled with different kinds of chocolates. Next, he headed to the toy section and carefully chose a doll with long hair. Meanwhile, Diana contacted the local animal shelter. She explained Laura’s heartfelt wish for a dog, and the shelter staff, touched by the story, set out to find the ideal puppy. They found a cute one with bright, curious eyes. With everything ready, Benny and Diana were looking forward to the day they would surprise Laura.
Soon, the day of the surprise finally arrived. Dressed in a Santa suit, Benny was nervous as he did not know if Laura would like the surprise. Laura shouted in delight when she saw Benny and Diana entering her house with the gifts that she had wished for. Benny breathed a sigh of relief. “The chocolates look yummy! And I love the doll and the dog so much!” Laura exclaimed as she hugged Santa. Even though it was a simple gesture, being able to help Laura fulfil her wishes warmed Benny’s heart. At that moment, it was as if through Laura, he was experiencing the joyous Christmas morning he had always longed for as a child.

注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Together, Benny and Diana worked out a plan to surprise Laura and bring her wishes to fruition.
