A Visit to Li Rui’s Hometown
George and his father Bob plan to travel to Li Rui’s hometown, so George makes a phone call to ask Li Rui to be their travelling guide.
Bob visited this small town about twenty years ago. At that time, he became close friends with Li Rui’s grandfather. It has been ages since the two old men met each other, so Grandpa will be really delighted for their arrival. Bob is curious about the great changes that have taken place in the town after so many years.
When they arrive, Li Rui shows them around. In the old days, people needed to spend half a whole day driving to get to the town, because the roads were narrow and rough. But now, new wide highways have been built, and the trip only takes one hour.
When Li Rui was little, she took a bumpy school bus for nearly 40 minutes on bad roads every morning. Now the bus ride to school is just 15 minutes.
Medical conditions also improved greatly. Villagers used to travel a long way to find a doctor when they were sick, but the town has built a brand-new hospital recently.
For daily shopping, there were no proper supermarkets or shopping stores ten years ago. Now a big supermarket stands on the main street of the town.
The biggest change lies in the hills. The hills were once totally covered with sand. Thanks to years of planting trees, they are now covered with thick, beautiful green trees. Life for local villagers has become much easier and more comfortable.

Fight Against Sandstorms
Years ago, Li Rui’s hometown suffered from terrible natural problems. Sandstorms happened all year round. Strong wind and sand destroyed farmland little by little, so farmland became smaller and smaller. At the very beginning, local villagers had to finish farming work completely by hand without any machines.
To change this bad situation, villagers tried a useful way. They found a special kind of bush. Its long strong roots could hold loose soil together and stop the sand from blowing away. People started to plant these bushes on all sandy land, and the local government offered money, tools and plenty of support for this environmental project. Later, farming machines were introduced to help with planting work.
Now great results have been achieved. Corn fields become huge and fertile. Villagers planted thousands of bushes and trees over the years. Nowadays, sandstorms happen far less often, the whole environment becomes better and better. The improvement of nature also brings a better life: villagers earn more money and live much happier lives than before.
