In my Ancient to Medieval (中世纪的) Literature class, my students celebrate and are walking on air when they get to the last book of the term, because it’s not a poetry book but a prose (散文) one. But it’s not just my students who don’t enjoy poetry — few adults find themselves desiring an evening with it. Most people complain that poetry is too difficult to understand or not accessible enough. But I think it’s deeper than that.
Nowadays, we have become so caught up in the shallow bustle (喧闹) of the world, senseless in our shortsightedness, selfsatisfied with our success and proud of our productivity. Our days are filled with “busy” because being busy is easy. To do ten things in five hours is easy; to do one thing for five hours is difficult. We become unable to occupy ourselves with listening to a bird’s morning song or spend an hour staying alone in deep and free thought. We have lost the miner’s skills in digging. We’ve just contented ourselves in shallow waters.
Many people think there’s no payoff in reading poetry. It just doesn’t fit into the fastpaced, shallow, productivitydriven culture. Reading poetry does take work, but the work is rewarding: As one wrestles with a poem — reading it aloud, reading it silently, reading it over and over again — the meaning and beauty surface from it with clarity. Once we explore the depths of poetry, we’ll realize it has reached our own soul. And as we learn this practice in reading poetry, we learn this practice in reading life.
As a child, we learnt to crawl (爬), then walk, and then run. And we never stop running. But perhaps, if we take a break from being “productive” and look up from our plans, we might see the warm sunshine and hear birds singing as described in poems. Poetry makes a man himself again when he flashes a smile because of these beautiful scenes.
24. How do the students feel about the prose learning?
A. Surprised. B. Unsatisfied.
C. Excited. D. Disappointed.
25. What are people nowadays like in the author’s eyes?
A. They are proud of their shortsightedness.
B. They suffer terribly from the busy lifestyle.
C. They are separated from the surroundings.
D. They lose the ability to think deeply about things.
26. What can be inferred about poetry and life from Paragraph 3?
A. It takes hard work to truly understand life.
B. Life is improved by the existence of poetry.
C. Learning poetry is a practice of selfreflection.
D. Reading poetry begins with a desire for a reward.
27. What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A. Reading poetry is actually a gradual process.
B. A positive attitude to life brings good fortune.
C. People should stop to enjoy the beauty of life.
D. Productivity is less important than a good plan.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. A 27. C
【解析】
【导语】文章分析了人们不爱读诗的原因,并建议人们给忙碌的生活按下暂停键,体会生活的美好。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“In my Ancient to Medieval (中世纪的) Literature class, my students celebrate and are walking on air when they get to the last book of the term, because it’s not a poetry book but a prose (散文) one. But it’s not just my students who don’t enjoy poetry — few adults find themselves desiring an evening with it. (在我的《古代至中世纪文学》课堂上,每当学到本学期最后一本书时,学生们都欢呼雀跃、欣喜万分。原因在于这不是一本诗集,而是散文集。然而,不喜欢诗歌的不只是我的学生——很少有成年人会主动想要花一整晚品读诗歌。)”可知,学生们学散文时应是很兴奋的。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“To do ten things in five hours is easy; to do one thing for five hours is difficult. We become unable to occupy ourselves with listening to a bird’s morning song or spend an hour staying alone in deep and free thought. We have lost the miner’s skills in digging. We’ve just contented ourselves in shallow waters.(在五个小时内做十件事容易,而花五个小时做一件事却是困难的。我们变得无法专注于听鸟儿的晨鸣,也无法花一个小时独自深入而自由地思考。我们失去了矿工挖掘的技能,只是在浅水区自我满足。)”可知,作者觉得现在的人们失去了深入思考的能力。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Reading poetry does take work, but the work is rewarding: As one wrestles with a poem — reading it aloud, reading it silently, reading it over and over again — the meaning and beauty surface from it with clarity. Once we explore the depths of poetry, we’ll realize it has reached our own soul. And as we learn this practice in reading poetry, we learn this practice in reading life.(读诗歌确实需要付出努力,但这份努力是有回报的:当一个人潜心研读一首诗——大声诵读、静心默读、反复品读,诗歌的意义与美感便会清晰地浮现出来。一旦我们探寻诗歌的深邃内涵,就会发现它已然触动我们的心灵。当我们掌握品读诗歌的方式,我们也学会体悟生活。)”可知,读诗确实需要付出,反复读才能理解一首诗的真正含义,若掌握了读诗的方法,自然也就掌握了读懂人生的方法。由此可推知,人生和诗一样,需要花费工夫才能理解其真谛。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“As a child, we learnt to crawl (爬), then walk, and then run. And we never stop running. But perhaps, if we take a break from being “productive” and look up from our plans, we might see the warm sunshine and hear birds singing as described in poems. Poetry makes a man himself again when he flashes a smile because of these beautiful scenes.(孩童时期,我们先学会爬,而后行走,再学会奔跑。此后我们便不停奔忙。但或许,如果我们暂时放下对 “效率” 的追逐,从繁杂的规划中抬眼观望,就能看见诗中描绘的暖阳,听见鸟儿啼鸣。当人因这些美好的景象展露笑颜时,诗歌让他重新回归本真的自我。)”可知,人自出生以后就不停地前行。或许人们应给忙碌的生活按下暂停键,享受诗中描述的阳光和鸟鸣。由此可推知,作者认为人们应该停下来享受生活之美。

It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.
But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification.
One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.
32. A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.
A. people regard themselves socially different
B. most people belong to middle class
C. it is easy to recognize a person’s class
D. it is time to end class distinction
33. The word “stratification” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. variety B. qualification C. authority D. division
34. British attitudes towards accent ________.
A. are based on regional status
B. have a long tradition
C. are shared by the Americans
D. have changed in recent years
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The middle class is expanding
B. A person’s accent reflects his class
C. Class is a key part of British society
D. Each class has unique characteristics.

When I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff, I was very upset. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything because when we first met, we got along so well. It was as if we’d known each other forever.
“No way!” I said, as I sat next to her on the first day of karate (空手道) camp. “Are those banana chips in your lunchbox?”
“You like banana chips?” she said in a surprised voice. “They’re my favorite snack.”
“My aunt brought some the last time she visited, and I’ve been craving (渴望) them ever since,” I said.
“I guess today’s your lucky day,” she said, handing me the bag. “We have a big box that’s kind of taking up space in the cupboard. So, you’d actually be helping me out!”
Right then is when I knew that Karina and I were meant to be friends forever. Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. The more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both had two adorable cats, we both had an awesome younger sister, and we both had the same favorite song.
But then something happened. Karate camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of large old trees on it. Whenever it was nice out, we’d get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees.
After we finished lunch, our coach, Miguel, reminded us to keep the forest as clean and perfect as it was when we got here.
And that’s when things got complicated.
Sam, one of our teammates, asked us, “Have you guys heard that shopping mall rumor? They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.” To my surprise, Karina said, “My parents told me the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really needed work and people’s jobs were more important than trees.”
Paragraph 1:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文一:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees. Since trees were home to hundreds of small animals, I couldn’t believe that Karina could be such a cruel person who wanted to replace the lively forest with a noisy shopping mall. Overwhelmed by anger and confusion, I shouted at Karina, “How dare you wish to destroy such a wonderful forest?” Shocked by my mean words, Karina stared at me in horror and failed to say a word. After a while, Karina broke the silence, telling me the story of her parents.
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. Her parents had suffered from unemployment for a long time and could hardly support the family, so she understood the importance of jobs deeply. “But I just want to save our wonderful land,” I explained in a low voice, feeling sorry and guilty. Gently patting me on the shoulder, Karina comforted me, “That’s fine.” It suddenly dawned on me that a friend was not the same person as me, but a person who accepted me. I smiled at Karina, and invited her to hang out, after which our laughter soon lingered in the beautiful land again.
范文二:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees. I said, “We have to stop that. Think of all the birds that would lose their homes! Can’t we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” Hearing what I said, Karina told me super seriously, “Maybe we’re not quite as alike as we thought.” I felt very upset. Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren’t meant to be friends, I was thinking.
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. No matter what it was, the difference wasn’t worth losing a perfectly good friendship over. We ended up having lots more fun at karate camp. And even now, a couple of months later, we still send each other funny pictures of our cats or our baking creations. No two people are exactly alike, and even the best friends disagree sometimes. What’s important is that you respect each other and focus on the good stuff.
范文三:
I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees. I poured out my feelings on the trees being home to all the birds as well as being able to absorb carbon dioxide, with much anger overwhelming me as I almost lost my coolness. “Don’t you think people’s livelihood is more important than a patch of wood?” Karina asked me directly. “But not at the cost of cutting down trees!” I said firmly. The argument between us made me feel powerless and there seemed to be a barrier growing between us.
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did. Karina took my hand sincerely and said, “I never want to quarrel with you again. Maybe we shouldn’t hold on our own views so seriously, and instead, learn to respect each other.” I threw myself into her arms. All my feelings of horror, anger, guilt and grief were suddenly gone due to this comforting hug. During the following days we immersed ourselves in the fun of karate. There seemed to be delight in every heart, laughter in every face, and cheer in every step.

“The arrow shot is so straight that it hits the bull’s eye. The young people will have good luck…” Dargye sang as he worked on his handmade bag.
Dargye, 56, an artist who excels at traditional craftsmanship (技艺) and Tibetan folk music in Drinba village in Dragyib district, Nyingchi, Xizang autonomous region, remembers many folk songs he learned from his father and uncle. Now, it’s his turn to pass them on.
“I have liked traditional songs and dances since I was a child,” said Dargye, who has four apprentices (学徒). “The songs tell the histories of our ancestors and carry our unique culture, and it’s always a lot of fun to perform these traditional songs and dances at various gatherings.” The song topics vary from archery, love, to labor and praise for the land. In addition to teaching these songs to his family members and apprentices, he also uses social media platforms such as WeChat to teach songs.
His daughter, Chok Butri, also admires the folk culture. After posting a video of her daughter, Tsering Kyi, dancing on Douyin, she gained a lot of new fans on the popular short-video platform. “We are modern people living in a modern era, so it’s important and our responsibility that we use modern tools to pass on our traditional culture to make it last forever.” said Chok Butri, adding that she often posts songs and dances on WeChat and Douyin.
Dargye and his fellow villagers also recreate songs, adding modern elements such as aircraft and trains to the lyrics. Besides singing and dancing, Dargye makes handicrafts decorated with Tibetan cultural elements, including various hide and hair ropes, bags made of leather and cloth, and knife sheaths.
The local government encourages villagers to inherit (继承) and develop folk songs and other forms of traditional culture. Dargye’s efforts to preserve folk culture have been acknowledged by the government. In 2014, he was chosen as a county-level intangible (无形的) cultural inheritor and receives funds every year.
28. Why does Dargye want to pass the culture on?
A. He wants to satisfy his interest. B. He wants to learn from the seniors.
C. He wants to bring people fun. D. He wants to inherit and develop it.

Paragraph 2:
Later, I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did.
