Winter sports are very popular in European and North American countries. These
places usually receive a lot of snow during the winter months
Skiing and skating become the major sports activities for Westerners during the winter.
People from Norway,Italy, the United States,Sweden and Canada all like winter sports.
Winter sports such as alpine skiing(高山滑雪)and skating are very popular because they
allow people to keep warm while enjoying outdoors activities.
People can exercise outdoors in beautiful surroundings:snow-covered mountains and
pine trees among endless white snow.Putting oneself into the white world and breathing
fresh air,one can relax and forget all worries.Of course, the practice of flying down the
hills excites people.
The Alps in Europe is the most ideal place for skiing. The Rocky Mountains in the
Western United States is another good place.
Some people call winter sports"royal sports".That is because of their high cost.
These sports always require expensive equipment. They also need high-standard places to
be enjoyed.
Winter sports are not popular in China. The southern and coastal areas have no skiing
and skating. And the snow-blanketed northeastern and southwestern areas have very poor
equipment.
But thanks to the efforts of the government,China has caught up with world-class

Many sugar-sweetened beverages()have little to offer-no nutritional value and
lots of calories, and their harmful health effects have been well-documented.Now,a study
links drinking too many sugary beverages-and even 100%natural fruit juices-to an
increased risk of early death.Specifically, drinking too much fruit juice could lead to an
increased risk of early death ranging from 9%to 42%,according to a study.
Overall, the sugars found in orange juice, although naturally occurring, are pretty
similar to the sugars added to soda and other sweetened beverages, the study suggests.
"Sugary beverages, whether soft drinks or fruit juices, should be limited,"Jean Welsh,a
co-author of the study said.
Seven US cities, including New York and most recently Philadelphia, have levied(
)taxes on sweetened drinks with added sugar in an effort to reduce consumption. The
new study defined"sugary beverages"as both sugar-sweetened drinks, like soda and fruit-
flavored drinks, and 100%natural fruit juices that have no added sugar. So how does fruit
juice compare to soda?"Previous research has shown that high consumption of sugars like
those in soft drinks and fruit juices is linked to several cardiovascular(u心血管的)disease
risk factors,"Welsh explained.
People who consumed 10%or more of their daily calories as sugary beverages had a
44%greater risk of dying due to a heart disease and a 14%greater risk of an early death
from any cause compared with people who consumed less than 5%of their daily calories
as sugary beverages, the study showed. Each additional 12-ounce()serving of fruit
juice per day was associated with a 24%higher risk of death from any cause, and each
additional 12-ounce serving of sugary beverages per day was associated with an 11%
higher risk.
This is one of the first studies to examine the relationship between sugary drinks,
including 100%fruit juices,and early death,wrote Marta Guasch Fere and Dr.Frank B.
4
Hu in an editorial published alongside the new study."Although fruit juices may not be as
harmful as sugar-sweetened beverages, their consumption should be moderated in
children and adults, especially for individuals who wish to control their body weight,"
Guasch Fere and Hu wrote.
Welsh said we need to consider both fruit juices and sugar-sweetened beverages when
we think about how much sugar we consume each-day.Between the two,she was in favor
of fruit juices:"Given its vitamin and mineral content, fruit juice in small amounts may
have a beneficial effect that isn't seen with sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages."
26.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Sugar-free drinks basically have no nutritional value.
B.Drinking too much fruit juice may not be a healthy option.
C.The negative effect of drinking too many beverages remains unknown.
D Natural fruit juices are usually healthier than sugary beverages.
27.Why have seven US cities taxed sugary beverages?
A.To increase the government's income.
B.To urge people to turn to sugar-free drinks
C.To let people buy less sweetened beverages.
D.To increase the consumption of natural juice
28.How are the findings of the study presented to us?
A.By giving examples.B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving advice.D.By stating the facts
29 What does the underlined word"moderated"most probably mean?
A.Avoided.B.Encouraged C.Reduced D.Increased.
30.From Jean Welsh's words,we know that
A sugar is a major cause of cardiovascular disease
B.the sugar in juice is different from the sugar in sweetened beverages
C.fruit juices are only recommended when consumed in small amounts
D.the amount of sugar we consume mainly lies in drinks with added sugar

Finding the Real You
Psychometric testing-personality testing-has been very popular nowadays as
studies show their results to be three times more exact in predicting your job performance.
These tests are now included in almost all graduate recruitment and are widely used
in the selection of managers.
The most popular of these personality tests is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
(MBTD.It is based om the theory that we are born with a tendency)to one personality type
which stays more or less fixed throughout life. You answer 88 questions and are then given
your"type",such as Outgoing or Quiet,Feeling or Thinking.
5
Critics of personality testing raise doubts about"social engineering".Psychologist Dr.
Colin Gill warns that the "popular"personality traits (have their disadvantages.
"People who are extremely open to new experiences can be butterflies, going from one
idea to the next without mastering any of them."However, the psychometric test is here to
stay, which may be why a whole sub-industry on cheating personatity tests has sprung up.
"It's possible to cheat,"admits Gill,"but having to pretend to be the person you are at work
will be tiring and unhappy and probably short-lived."
So can we change our personality?"Your basic personality is fixed by the time you're
21,"says Gill,"but it can be affected by motivation and intelligence. If you didn't have the
personality type to be a doctor but desperately wanted to be one and were intelligent
enough to master the skills, you could still go ahead. But trying to go too much against
type for too long requires much energy and is actually to be suffered for long.I think it's
why we're seeing this trend for downshifting-too many people trying to fit in to a type
that they aren't really suited for."
Our interest in personality now exists in every part of our lives. If you ask an expert
for advice on anything, you'll probably be quizzed about your personality. But if
personality tests have any value to us,perhaps it is to free us from the idea that all of us
are full of potential, and remind us of what we are.As they say in one test when they ask
for your age.pick the one you are,not the one you wish you were.
3f.The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is based on the belief that
A.certain personality traits are common
B personality is largely decided from birth
C.some personality types are better than others
D.personality traits are various from time to time
32.Which of the following best explains"sprung up"underlined in paragraph 3?
A.flown
B.risen
C.pretended
D.appeared
33.According to Dr.Gill, what is the problem with personality tests?
A.Employers often find the results unclear.
B.They may have a negative effect on takers.
C.People ean easily lie about their true abilities.
D.The results could be opposite to what employers want
34.In Dr.Gill's view, how easy is it to change your personality?
A.It's possible in your adult life.
It's easy if you haye great motivation.
C.It's difficult before the age of 21,
D.It's unlikely because it requires much energy.
35.What final conclusion does the author reach about the value of personality tests?
A.They are not really worth doing.
B.They may encourage greater realism.
C.They are of doubtful value to employers.
D.They can strengthen the idea we have of our abilities.

参考范文:
Dear John,
Knowing you're interested in Chinese calligraphy,I'm writing to tell you how to
learn Chinese calligraphy.
As we all know, the four treasures of the study are writing brush, ink, paper and
ink stone, which are essential to learn Chinese calligraphy. As to the way to learn it,I
think, for one thing, you may study the basic structure of each Chinese character step
by step. For another, choosing a good model book to copy is of great benefit to you.
Chinese calligraphy is a fine art of the excellent traditional cultures in China. Not only
does it do good to health, but also it can cultivate morality and purify our souls.
Hoping you can come to China to enjoy it personally.
Yours sincerely,
LiHua

Tai Chi and Qigong hope to educate the world about the health benefits of the two
exercises. The event which started in 1999,joins people in over 65 countries.
Celebrations include Tai Chi displays and free classes in most participating cities
around the world.
Tai Chi is not used for self-defence,but is instead practiced for health reasons.Doctors
say it has benefits for those who have heart and blood pressure problems.Tai Chi is
famous around the world and its followers do their morning slow practices in parks.
Traditionalists say that Tai Chi is a mixture of self-defence and health and that these
represent the two opposing forces of yin and yang.A form of Tai Chi with just 42
movements,called wushu,was a sport in the 11th Asian Games in 1990.There are
attempts to make it an Olympic event.
