Many fly at night, using the stars to keep direction. Bright city lights can confuse them, especially when clouds hide the sky. Volunteers had often found injured birds near the glass towers in the business district before sunrise. Last autumn, twelve buildings joined a four-week experiment. Decorative lights above the twentieth floor were switched off from 11 pm to 6 am, while entrance lights, street lamps and emergency signs remained on. Volunteers walked the same route every morning and recorded the number and species of birds they found. Compared with the same four weeks of the previous year, collisions around the participating buildings fell by sixty per cent. Buildings that kept all their decorative lights on showed almost no change. Several shop owners had worried that darker towers would make the district feel unsafe, but police records showed no increase in night-time incidents. The city has not yet made the programme compulsory. Instead, it has asked more companies to join next season and has promised to publish the new results. These changes probably helped their songs carry above the low sound of engines. However, nests near the road produced fewer young birds on average. The local council later reduced the speed limit and covered part of the road with a quieter surface. The following spring, the birds still began early, but their songs were slightly lower than before. Nesting success improved, although it did not reach the level recorded at the quiet sites. Patel warns against saying that birds simply "get used to" traffic. Changing a song may help communication, he says, but it may also require energy or affect how birds choose partners. They now choose fragments for genetic variety as well as fast growth. Local diving clubs photograph each restored area every month, giving the scientists more information than the small research team could collect alone. Project leader Ana Silva describes the results as "useful, not magical". Restored corals can rebuild small damaged areas, but they will not survive if sea temperatures continue to rise sharply.
