If your watch is broken, can you tell when it is time for lunch? Don’t worry. You can still tell the time by making a sundial (日晷).
A sundial is something that uses the sun to tell time. Making most sundials these days not only needs a flat base but also a stick called a gnomon (晷针). Whenever the sun is shining, the gnomon casts a shadow (投射影子), and we can look at where the shadow falls to tell what time it is. Since ancient times, people have been making all kinds of sundials to help them tell time.
And having a sundial in your house or your school or your library lets everyone know that around here people care about science. And it’s useful when there’s something wrong with your watch. So, do you want to make your own sundial?
As long as there’s sunlight outside, you can take something long and straight like a stick or even a drinking straw, and stick it into the ground and that’s your gnomon. If you live in the northern hemisphere (北半球), your gnomon should be tilted (倾斜) a little towards the north. If you live in the southern hemisphere, it should be tilted a little to the south. Every hour, go outside and look at the shadow your gnomon is making on the ground, then just make a mark where the shadow falls.
If you want to know more steps of making a sundial, you can get them on my WeChat Moments tomorrow evening.
29. What is a sundial?

C. Someone who has a sundial at home may care about science.
D. We can tell time with a sundial even when it’s raining outside.

Gary and Karen ran all the way to the Academy (学院). When they arrived, it was already ten minutes past five. “I’m sorry,” said a blonde (金发的) woman at the door of the exam room. “You’re late and the test has already started.”
She looked at her notebook. “You must be Gary,” she said. “Everyone came on time. Why didn’t you?”
“Please just give me one chance,” said Gary. “Something happened. Really, it’s not my fault. It’s true,” said Karen. “You have to believe him.” Karen told her the story of the shoplifter (商店扒手). “All right,” she said. “But we can’t give you any extra time. Take a place and don’t disturb the others. Gary turned and looked at Karen. He mouthed (不出声地说) the words “Thank you” to her.
Gary looked at the test paper. His heart was beating fast. He remembered what Laura had told him. “Stay calm. Read all the questions carefully first, then work out how much time is available for each question. Make sure you save ten minutes for checking at the end.”
He had ninety minutes. He had to do a Maths paper and an English paper. Allowing ten minutes for checking, he had forty minutes for each paper. He set to work. He finished the Maths paper in twenty-five minutes. He checked his watch and started on the English paper. It wasn’t easy. He answered all the questions and checked his watch from time to time. He finished the English paper in thirty-five minutes. Then he read his Maths paper again. He found one mistake. He was glad he had checked carefully. He checked his English paper. He found two grammar mistakes and three spelling mistakes. He made the corrections. He looked through all his answers one more time. He took a deep breath and put down his pen. The room was quiet. He could only hear the sound of pages turning and pens writing. He checked his watch. He had finished fifteen minutes before the end of the test. Then he gave his test paper to the blonde woman.
The phone call came on next Monday. “This is Mrs. Dexter calling from the Football Academy. We’ve got the results of your test...” Gary fell silent. After a while, “I’ll be there,” said Gary excitedly, “and I won’t be late!”

If you’re missing an amazing party for your aunt’s birthday that you promised your mum you would attend, you’ll probably get “FOMO” — the fear of missing out.
It’s impossible to attend every social event in the calendar, but sometimes it really annoys you when you have prior (先前的) engagements (约定) and you know you’re missing out on something great.
But some people feel the opposite. Rather than feeling FOMO, they take joy in missing out. They don’t feel the need to attend everything, and instead find comfort in either sticking to their original plans or staying at home alone.
In a blog post, Kristen Fuller said “JOMO” is basically the “emotionally intelligent antidote to ‘FOMO’ and it is ‘about being present and being satisfied with where you are in life.’” Some people are born with it, others learn to accept it.
Here are the different ways JOMO can show itself:
1. Living in the moment
If you constantly worry about missing out on something, you cannot enjoy yourself wherever you are. This isn’t a healthy way to live your life, and Fuller wrote that you shouldn’t compare yourself to other people’s lives or experiences.
“JOMO allows us to be who we are in the present moment, which is the secret to finding happiness,” she said. “When you free up that competitive and anxious space in your brain, you have so much more time, energy and emotion to realize your true priorities (首要事情).”
2. Switching off
In an article, writer Justin Bariso discovered JOMO after he published his first book. He found it hard to switch off, worrying that his editor (编辑) would contact him for rewrites, or he would miss an important email. It wasn’t until he was abroad with his family and his daughter asked him to play that he thought: “What am I doing?”
“Did I really want to go to Starbucks to sit in front of my computer, responding to emails from people I barely know, when instead I could be spending time with my family on a beautiful beach?” he wrote.
3. Enjoying your own company
Some people are simply born with the ability to switch off, and not worry about what they could be missing out on. For them, being alone is important, and it doesn’t matter if they’re missing out on the party of the year.
Others don’t necessarily need the space on a biological level, but they don’t feel the need to compare their lives to others. These are the people who aren’t involved in social media, and find joy in what they have, rather than focusing on what they don’t.
36. Which of the following proves that you feel JOMO?
A. You spare a day for yourself every week to do some reading and writing.
B. You constantly check your emails to make sure you keep up with your work.
C. You cancel your original appointment and attend a party later.
D. You always work hard in order to create a better future for your family.
37. What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the article?
A. A requirement to improve the situation.
B. A way to take away the bad effects of something.
C. An experiment to test the effect of something.
D. A method to keep a balance between two things.
38. What is the cause of FOMO?
A. Some people were born with big competitive space in their brains.
B. People are not able to switch off the electronic equipment they use.
C. People tend to focus on what others have instead of what they own.
D. Some people spend too much time making friends on social media.
39. Which of the following may the writer disagree with?
A. FOMO may cause health problems in one way or another.
B. The more activities we participate in, the less anxious we will be.
C. We can learn to get JOMO if we are not born with it.
D. We should cut down unnecessary socializing(社交)and live our own life.
40. Which is the proper title of this article?
A. Differences between FOMO and JOMO
B. Your Choice: FOMO or JOMO
C. JOMO: A Way to Deal with Fear
D. JOMO: Find Happiness in Not Being Involved

阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的五个选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项。使短文通顺、连贯,意思完整。
We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? ____41____
Circles represent things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, flowers, raindrops and so on. ____42____ All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters’ bodies — heroes, kids, good people — are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness.
Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In Up, Carl, an elderly man, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. ____43____ Carl is stubborn (固执的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
____44____ Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons — they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable and don’t easily fall down. ____45____
Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So, next time you see a film, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
A. The angriest shape is the triangle.
B. These shapes show the characters’ personalities.
C. In this way, these shapes can help make films better.
D. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
E. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces...
F. Much like colors, different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.

例文:
During the past three years, I have developed a number of good personal qualities.
I am honest, responsible and always ready to help others. These qualities make me popular among classmates. In study, I work hard and ask questions actively. Whenever I face difficulties, I never give up but try to solve them patiently. This experience teaches me courage and persistence. In the future, I will keep learning and try my best to contribute to our society. I firmly believe hard work brings success. I hope we can all become better persons. Let’s grow together with light in eyes and love in hearts.
