Today is March 14th, the date of Pi Day.
Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 at a museum called Exploratorium in San Francisco. The employees paraded around one of the museum’s circular spaces during the first celebration. 31 years later, UNESCO declared Pi Day as the International Day of Mathematics.
Nowadays, Pi Day is celebrated across the world. American schools usually hold activities related to the food pie, such as pie-eating contests or simply throwing pie at each other. In some Chinese schools, competitions are held where the student who can accurately recite the most digits of pi wins. In Germany, schools encourage students to express their artistic talents through art displays centered around pi, ranging from pi-inspired paintings to mathematical sculptures.
For tonight’s lecture, we are honored to have Mr. Russell Wang, who will share with us some interesting stories about pi in history. Mr. Wang is a popular science writer ...

Founded in 2007, Short of the Week, the premier, industry-and-fan-trusted short film platform, is intended to showcase top emerging filmmakers’ works. Here your film appears on the front page, gains thousands of new fans, and connects directly with the world’s largest short film community of producers, programmers and filmmakers. · Head — Does it break new ground and have us thinking about something in a new way?
· Heart — Does it appeal to our emotion?
· Hand — Does it exhibit great skill and craftsmanship?
What We Avoid
We have no hard rules. In general, though, the following are not a good fit for us:
· Music videos or abstract films with no or little story
· Films driven merely by special effects
· Commercials or purely promotional pieces
· Travel photography videos
Refund Policy
As with other festivals, your fee is paid for your film to be considered. Submission doesn’t guarantee acceptance. If your film is not accepted, your submission fee won’t be refunded.

On my first weekend abroad, I attended a dinner party with my host family to celebrate the New Year. It was everything I had imagined a French dinner party would be — multiple courses, a variety of cheeses, bottles of champagne, and slices of fresh bread. Then, at the end of the meal, the host called out. “Okay, everyone, get under the table!”
What? An earthquake broke out? I watched as the children came running into the dining room and hid under the table. As it turns out, in the days after the New Year, the French celebrate with the galette des rois, or the “king cake”, a special cake with its own set of traditions. There is a small toy hidden inside the cake, and whoever finds it in their serving is the winner. Before it is sliced, all the children hide under the table so that they cannot see who will get the slice with the toy.
I’ve learned that many French traditions focus on food, and often they’ve taken me by surprise! From time to time, I’ve experienced a sense of culture shock, the feeling of confusion in a new country when you’re adjusting to things that maybe unfamiliar to you. Thankfully, I haven’t run into anything too difficult to manage. Before leaving for France, I learned strategies from the International Programs Office, a facility which helps prepare students to deal with these kinds of ups and downs.
They explained the phenomenon with a line graph to illustrate the highs and lows of the experience. You may experience a “honeymoon” phase, where you find everything new and exciting or even better than your home country. You may also experience low points, where all these little differences may seem frustrating and overwhelming.
I encountered a new fun, food-related cultural difference while in France. For example, the French eat with both wrists resting on the table, while many Americans tend to keep their left hands in their laps. I hadn’t even noticed the difference until my five-year-old host brother pointed it out! Moreover, on formal occasions, people tend to straighten their back. And it is also common to use bread as a utensil (用具), holding it in your hand like a knife, or using it to clean up the plate at the end of the meal. Finally, I love hearing “Bon Appétit!” (Good appetite!) before eating, whether I am seated at the table with my host family, or just grabbing a coffee at a nearby café!

It is mid-October, and some of our most important traditions are behind us: the Opening of School Assembly, Homecoming, and Mountain Day. Before joining Brearley School, I had heard of these events, but no description truly prepared me for how much they meant to students.
From a young age, students watch older peers (同辈) lead these traditions and hope to do the same one day. Many seniors remember the moment they were inspired to take part in the activities. It might have been as a kindergartener, watching the Athletic Association leaders cheer, or as a Class IV student, receiving a class mascot (吉祥物) from Class XII after singing special songs. It could even have been as a Class VII student, listening to student leaders speak at the Opening of School Assembly. These experiences connect different grades and reflect the school’s values. Seniors do not act “too cool” during these times. Instead, they show respect and kindness, setting an example to younger students. Along with teachers, they help build a community where everyone cares for each other.
Traditions serve our community in many ways. They give students something to look forward to and connect them with past generations of Brearley graduates. They also shape our culture and help us live out our values.
This was clear on Mountain Day as I walked by the lake with two seniors who had joined me on past hikes. We talked about the supportive classmates, books we had read, and how nice it was to step away from our desks and enjoy nature. I pointed out younger students walking ahead of us and said, “They remind me at their age-bright-eyed and wanting to be near older students.” We laughed. And that’s the power of traditions.
What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 1 refer to?

C.They overlook teachers’ warnings. D.They build a caring environment.
30.What does the author want to highlight in paragraph 3?
A.Shared values of the school. B.Heartfelt wishes of the students.
C.The role of the school’s traditions. D.The meaning of friendship.
31.What can we infer about the author?
A.He is a sharp-eyed college student. B.He has a deep love for his school.
C.He dreams of becoming a teacher. D.He is against the two seniors’ words.
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.C 31.B
根据画线词前“Before joining Brearley School, I had heard of these events(在进入布里尔利学校之前,我就已经听说过这些活动了)”可知,此处代词they指代学校举办的各种活动。故选A。
根据第二段“Instead, they show respect and kindness, setting an example to younger students. Along with teachers, they help build a community where everyone cares for each other.(相反,他们展现出尊重与友善的态度,为年轻学生们树立了榜样。他们与教师们一起,共同构建了一个大家相互关爱的社区)”可知,高年级学生在活动中营造了一个充满关爱的校园环境。故选D。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“Traditions serve our community in many ways. They give students something to look forward to and connect them with past generations of Brearley graduates. “Mathematical symbolism is present in every kind of literature, from fairy stories right through to War and Peace,” claims mathematician Sarah Hart. In Once Upon a Prime, she lays bare some of this hidden math and meaning in a host of poetry and novels.
She starts with nursery rhymes, often full of counting — such as “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe” — showing how numbers bleed into our very first encounters with the world of words. This is not just through counting but also through the rhythms (节奏) and rhyme patterns. It’s also through trebling — where a word or phrase is repeated three times, such as “Row, row, row your boat.”
The number three has a special hold on Western literature and languages in general. It pervades common phrases — “Three cheers for ...,” “Ready, Set, Go!” “Learning your ABCs.” Characters tend to come in threes too, like “The Three Little Pigs”.
Hart suggests this emphasis on three has some basis in mathematics. Three is the minimum number of points that can define a two-dimensional shape, and the minimum number of sticks that can make a stable rigid structure, that is, a triangle. These mathematical properties give the number three “a sense of strength and completeness”, Hart writes.
For a book about math and literature, it’s not surprising that Hart focuses quite a bit on poetry, which is often defined by patterns of some sort. Perhaps more revelatory (启发性的) is her look at how math also shapes the structure of novels.
Hart’s breakdowns of both math and literature make the book easy for anyone to follow, no matter their proficiency (精通) in either subject, though familiarity with some of the math and literature references might make for a slightly more satisfying read. Not everyone who finishes the book will discover the mathematical treasure hidden in a book or poem. But that takes little away from the appeal of reading Once Upon a Prime, a joyous tour of mathematical and literary pleasure.
Why does Sarah Hart mention nursery rhymes in her book?
A.To make her book readable to children. B.To recommend some classical nursery rhymes.
C.To present the writing styles of nursery rhymes. D.To prove math can be found in almost any literature.
33.What does the underlined word “pervades” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Spreads through. B.Relies on. C.Refers to. D.Starts with.
34.What aspect of literature does Sarah Hart focus on in her book?
A.The use of numbers in novels. B.The role of mathematics in poetry.
C.The influence of structures on storytelling. D.The significance of counting in fairy stories.
35.What does the author think of Once Upon a Prime?
A.Objective and serious. B.Humorous and plain.
C.Understandable and pleasant. D.In-depth and dull.
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.B 35.C
根据文章第一段“Mathematical symbolism is present in every kind of literature, from fairy stories right through to War and Peace(数学符号存在于各种文学作品中,从童话故事到《战争与和平》)”以及第二段“She starts with nursery rhymes, often full of counting — such as “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe” — showing how numbers bleed into our very first encounters with the world of words.(她以童谣开头,通常充满了数数的内容——比如“一、二、扣上我的鞋”——展示了数字是如何融入我们第一次接触单词世界的)”可推知,Sarah Hart提到童谣是为了证明数学几乎可以在任何文学作品中找到。
根据文章第三段“Characters tend to come in threes too, like “The Three Little Pigs”.(角色通常也以三人为一组出现,比如《三只小猪》)”及““Three cheers for ...,” “Ready, Set, Go!” “Learning your ABCs.”(“为……三声掌声!” “准备好了,开始!” “学习你的ABC。”)”等例子可推知,数字三在西方文学和语言中广泛存在、贯穿其中。由此可知,划线词pervades意为“渗透、遍及、弥漫”,与spreads through“传遍、遍及”意思最接近。
34.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“For a book about math and literature, it’s not surprising that Hart focuses quite a bit on poetry, which is often defined by patterns of some sort. Perhaps more revelatory (启发性的) is her look at how math also shapes the structure of novels.( 对于一本关于数学与文学的书来说,Hart将大量篇幅放在诗歌上并不令人意外,因为诗歌常常以某种模式为特征。或许更具启发性的是她对数学如何塑造小说结构的探讨)”可推知,Sarah Hart在书中关注的是数学对诗歌和小说结构的影响,即数学在文学中的作用,尤其是诗歌中数学的角色。
35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Hart’s breakdowns of both math and literature make the book easy for anyone to follow, no matter their proficiency (精通) in either subject, though familiarity with some of the math and literature references might make for a slightly more satisfying read.(Hart对数学和文学的详细解析,使得这本书无论读者在其中任何一门学科的掌握程度如何,都能轻松理解。不过,若对部分数学和文学内容有所了解,阅读体验可能会更加顺畅愉悦)”可推知,作者认为这本书既通俗易懂(understandable),又令人愉悦(pleasant)。
Parents of school-aged children are all too familiar with the after-school conversation that goes like this: “How was your school?” “Fine.” “What did you learn?” “Nothing.”
36(0分) Talking with children in the right way helps them understand the world, grow their vocabulary, build trust and learn how to use language properly. Believe it or not, these conversations can even influence how certain parts of a child’s brain develop.
The list below details some ways parents can start language building conversations to improve children’s literacy and family relationships.
●Listen actively. 37 It includes making eye contact, stopping tasks at hand and repeating what they are saying, and what they may be feeling to make sure you understand.
●Ask open-ended questions. Try avoiding questions that can simply be answered with “yes”, “no” or “nothing”. Open-ended questions usually begin with words like “Why, how, describe…”, “Tell me about…”, or “What do you think about…”. 38
●Try the “Strive-for-Five” framework. This conversational framework was developed by educators David Dickinson and Ann B.Morse. It aims to improve conversations by encouraging parents and educators to strive for five conversational turns with children, instead of the usual three to help kids build language skills. To try this, continue the conversation by asking fun open-ended follow-up questions or sharing another thought. 39
●Make conversations part of your daily life. If you find it difficult to actively listen and have purposeful conversations at certain times, plan them when it’s easier. 40
By using any or all of these suggestions, you can have more meaningful conversations. Not only will they help kids understand language better, but they’ll also make family relationships stronger.
A.Don’t end it too soon.
B.Show your kids how to be active listeners.
C.Most children are too tired to talk after school.
D.For example, talk while cooking, cleaning or reading together.
E.These questions encourage children to think deeper and share more.
F.Active listening means showing real interest in what kids want to share.
G.But having quality conversations with kids is not just about learning how their school day goes.

If you find it difficult to actively listen and have purposeful conversations at certain times, plan them when it’s easier.(让交谈成为日常生活的一部分。 D“For example, talk while cooking, cleaning or reading together.(例如,在做饭、打扫卫生或一起阅读时交谈。)”

Once, the violin was my favorite. Every evening after homework, I sat by the window to play. The notes were like soft whispers, making me feel calm. But when I had to play in front of others at school, I lost this joy. Last week, our class held a small talent show in the classroom. I was so nervous that my hands shook while playing, missing three notes in a row. After that, everyone fell quiet—it was so awkward. Since then, I’ve been scared of making mistakes. My fingers get stiff (僵硬的) when I practice for school performances, and just thinking about stepping onto the school auditorium (礼堂) stage makes my heart beat fast. I worry one wrong note will ruin the music and let my classmates and teacher down.
To get over this fear, I joined the school’s orchestra (管弦乐队) last month. On the first day, our conductor Mr. Hale told us, “In two weeks, we’ll have a performance on the school auditorium stage for the whole grade.” Everyone cheered, but I felt sick. I even froze up when practicing in front of 10 orchestra members — this big stage scared me.
A few days later, my friend Mia saw me practicing alone in the music classroom. She showed me a video: Joshua Bell, a great violinist, played in a busy train station. He wore a simple shirt and used an expensive violin, but most people walked by. What touched me most was how he closed his eyes and played like music was part of him. “He plays for the music itself, not the audience’s attention,” Mia said softly.
I practiced harder after watching that video. I asked Mr. Hale to let me play Bell’s piece in the grade performance. He said yes: “Good music comes from your heart, not from avoiding fear. ” I marked hard parts with colored pens and even practiced in front of my desk-mate. When I wanted to give up, Mia said, “Just play what you feel — don’t worry about being perfect.”
Today is the day of the performance. The school auditorium is filled with students. After the orchestra’s first two pieces, Mr. Hale looked at me and nodded — it’s my turn to play.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Mia patted me on the shoulder and smiled, and I walked onto the school auditorium stage.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Halfway through the performance, I accidentally played a wrong note.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
Mia patted me on the shoulder and smiled, and I walked onto the school auditorium stage. I gripped my violin tightly, my fingers still a little stiff. Then I saw Mia in the front row—she mouthed “you got this” and gave me a thumbs-up. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes for a moment, and remembered what Joshua Bell did: play for the music, not the crowd. When I put the bow to the strings, the first note sounded clearer than I expected. The nervousness slowly faded, and I started to focus on how the music felt, not on whether I’d make a mistake.
Paragraph 2
Halfway through the performance, I accidentally played a wrong note. I kept going, just like I practiced with my desk-mate. To my surprise, the mistake didn’t ruin the music — it felt like a small pause before the melody continued. When I finished the last note, the auditorium was quiet for a second, then broke into applause. Mia was cheering the loudest. Mr. Hale smiled and nodded at me. I walked off stage, my hands no longer stiff. I realized that playing in front of others isn’t about being perfect — it’s about sharing the music I love.
②集中精力于:focus on/concentrate on
③意识到:realize/be aware of

Founded in 2007, Short of the Week, the premier, industry-and-fan-trusted short film platform, is intended to showcase top emerging filmmakers’ works. Here your film appears on the front page, gains thousands of new fans, and connects directly with the world’s largest short film community of producers, programmers and filmmakers. Requirements
· Films need to be 40 minutes or less. We prefer films shorter than 10 minutes.
· We like premieres (首映). There is no completion date requirement.
· We require films to have all necessary rights and releases secured for us to feature them, including music.
· We only select films that are free for audiences.
What We Look For
We look for great stories that brave new territory. We value great characters, interesting new worlds, and stories that surprise us over fancy visual effects, famous actors, or silly one-liners that often feed most online videos. So when screening films, we tend to score them based on three aspects:

We’ve all heard the advice to “get out of your comfort zone” by taking on a new challenge. A recent study goes a step further: Make discomfort a direct goal. That’s more likely to motivate you 56(15分) if you only focus on what you hope to learn.
In the first of five experiments, the researchers assigned several hundred students training at Second City Chicago 57 (participate) in a small-group improvisation(即兴) exercise, and then instructed half of the group that their goal during the session was “to feel awkward and uncomfortable.” The rest, 58 (that) in the control group, 59 (tell) to “feel yourself developing new skills.” Members of the first group kept at the exercise longer than the others did and took 60 (great) risks.
Experiments 61 (involve) other dimensions of personal growth—engaging in expressive writing, learning about gun violence, and hearing about opposing political 62 (belief)—produced similar results.
Reframing anxiety as excitement has been proven a way to improve singing in front of strangers, and thinking of stress as 63 means to boost achievement demonstrated a stress-management technique.
“When people reinterpret negative experiences as 64 (function), they are more willing to engage in tasks that call forth those experiences,” the researchers explain. “Instead of seeing discomfort as unrelated to the goal 65 a signal to stop, they will start perceiving it as a sign of progress toward their goal.”

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Mia patted me on the shoulder and smiled, and I walked onto the school auditorium stage.
