Tu Youyou is one of the most famous scientists in China. She was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang, in 1930. From an early age, she was interested in traditional Chinese medicine and science.
After graduating from university, Tu began working at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the 1960s, a serious disease called malaria was killing millions of people worldwide. Tu was chosen to lead a research team to find a cure.
