Passage 1
“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friends are important to us. Friends help us get through hard times. Friends also influence us a lot. Let’s enjoy two poems about friendship.
To Wang Lun
I, Li Bai, sit aboard a ship about to go, When suddenly on shore your farewell songs your farewell. However deep the Lake of Peach Blossoms may be, It is not so deep, O Wang Lun!
As your love for me.
A Time to Talk
By Robert FrostWhen a friend calls to me from the road And slows his horse to a meaning walk, I don’t stand still and look around On all the hills I haven’t hoed, And shout from where I am, what is it?
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground (把锄头插入松土). Blade (刀片)-end up and five feet tall, And plod (吃力行进): I go up to the stone wall for a friendly visit.
Both poems are famous in their cultures, but they tell different stories. Li Bai described the scene (场景) of his friend seeing him off. US poet Robert Frost wrote about a friend’s visit when he was working. Li made a comparison. His poem shows the friendship between him and his friend is deeper than the deep water. Frost’s poem, on the other hand, tells the readers that we should stop what we are doing to talk with our friends. It tells us that nothing should get in the way of spending time with friends. The language is simple but sincere.

Heroes come in all ages. These young people show how small acts of bravery make a big difference.

“When I was five, my friend gave away hair and I thought it would be a good idea. Kids in my school and other places often made fun of me, saying I looked like a girl. Even grown-ups did. But I stuck it out. I knew why I was doing it. My hair would help provide free hairpieces to children in need. It felt good to make others happy. I learned to be strong and to stand up for my beliefs.”
While boarding in the ocean on a family vacation, David, 18, noticed a mother and child struggling in deep water. The trained lifeguard jumped into action.
“I saw the mom and child being pulled underwater by the strong tide (潮). I shouted, ‘Are you all right?’ The woman said no, so I swam over with my board. I was tired, but I had little time to think about it. I gave her my board and swam to the boy, who’d gone under. Waves crashed over us as we headed to shore. I don’t see myself as a hero, just lucky to be there. It reminded me how precious and unpredictable life is.”
Lily, age nine, helped her family escape from a fire.
“I woke up early and smelled smoke. I woke up my mom, and she shouted for everyone to get out of the house. Minutes later, the roofs collapsed! An electrical fire had started in the top of the house, and smoke alarms hadn’t gone off because the fire was above them.
“I paid attention when the firefighters came to talk with us in Grade 3. That’s how I knew what to do. It’s OK to be scared, but you have to be stronger and braver than your fears.”

Passage 3
I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as Mother sat doing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. "But the desk", she said, "is for Elizabeth".
I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me, she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.
They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was "too emotional". But she lived "on the surface".
As years passed, I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.
I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.
My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest, finally, peace-it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to Mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not.
Now the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work, I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside-a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (被折叠) and refolded many times.
Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose, Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

Not long ago as I stood in the security line at Los Angeles International Airport, I couldn’t help but notice the family in front of me.
The mother got her hands full, traveling with her 8-year-old son, as well as a baby daughter in a stroller (婴儿车). Besides, she was pulling a car seat and two backpacks. As they waited for their turn, I noticed the boy kept trying to go beyond the rope barrier (障碍). This mother calmly instructed him to stop several times, never losing her temper.
When she was ready to get the baby out of the stroller to go through the security scanner (扫描仪), the boy pushed past the rope barrier and into the forbidden area, causing a security guard to come over and loudly scold (训斥) him.
The mother stopped between her son and the security guard, and promised it wouldn’t happen again. My best friend is crazy about buying popular dolls these days. She spends all her pocket money on the latest limited edition (最新限量版). Now she even asked me to lend her some money. What should I do?
Thanks!

【答案】
Hi,
I think you should talk to your friend honestly.
First, tell her that spending all her money on dolls is not wise. She needs to save for daily needs. Second, explain that true friends help each other make good choices, not just give money. You can suggest she set a monthly budget for hobbies. This way, she can enjoy collecting dolls without financial stress.
I believe your friend will understand your care.

【答案】例文
Dear Ben,
I was really worried to hear about the stress you’re going through with your upcoming exams.
First, it leads to serious sleep deprivation, which harms your memory and concentration. Second, it can cause burnout, making you feel exhausted and unable to learn efficiently.
To break this cycle, I have two suggestions. Don’t give up your hobbies. Spending just 30 minutes on something you enjoy, like playing football or drawing, can greatly reduce your anxiety. Establish a reasonable schedule.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

“A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Friends are important to us. Friends help us get through hard times. Friends also influence us a lot. Let’s enjoy two poems about friendship.
To Wang Lun
I, Li Bai, sit aboard a ship about to go, When suddenly on shore your farewell songs your farewell. However deep the Lake of Peach Blossoms may be, It is not so deep, O Wang Lun!

Passage 2
Heroes come in all ages. These young people show how small acts of bravery make a big difference.
Tom, age 11, is growing out his hair for the third time to help other kids, though some kids are mean to him.

Passage 4
It became clear that this young boy had some special needs—feeling scared, he covered his ears and dropped to the floor in a small ball. Without hesitation, this mother knelt down and spoke so fly but firmly to her son, explaining that he would get in very big trouble with the security guard if he crossed the line again. Then she hugged and kissed him on the forehead before standing up to once again untie her baby from the stroller.
I wanted to step in and help, and just as I was about to offer help, that mother was motioned forward to go through the security scanner. Everyone in line breathed a sigh of relief as she made it through security on the very first try.
That amazing mother looked after both of her children, dealing with the unexpected situation with grace, dignity (尊严) and love. “If they have medals for motherhood, she surely deserves one!” I thought in just those 15 minutes when I watched her.
