A horseback riding accident resulted in severe injuries, the death of my beloved horse Spooks, and the horrible news that I’d never ride again. I was set on proving the doctors wrong. Just a few months later, with my mother’s support, I rode sidesaddle and won my first jumping competition. The excitement was incredible. From then on, I committed my life to adventure, remembering my mother’s lesson: never say, “I can’t”. At 22, I read about an opening to be a motorcycle trick rider — I’d learned to ride a few years earlier. Still, it was 1976 and I knew they were unlikely to hire a woman. I thought about that as I signed my trick rider application, leaving off the honorific — Ms., hoping to hide the fact that I was a woman. But they never got back to me. I was heartbroken. Maybe the position had already been filled; maybe they’d discovered I was a woman. My friend Steve then proposed an idea that at first seemed crazy: learning to fly aeroplanes. “Flying is for men,” I laughed at the idea. But gradually, I realized the suggestion had stuck with me. Years ago, trial flights — brief introductory sessions with an instructor — cost just £5 for 15 minutes in the air. Steve and I both signed up, and after my first session, I couldn’t stop talking about flying. I got my license and headed for the US to work as a pilot. It wasn’t easy. Initially, people were doubtful about a woman working in the role, but I ended up outperforming my male colleagues. Twenty years later, I returned to England and started my own flying company. Now, I live a quieter life. I’ve settled in a village in Lincolnshire, spending much of my time volunteering in care homes. Last October, after nearly fifty years and countless adventures, I received a letter from a post office in Staines. It was my trick rider application. The post office apologized for the delay and explained it had been found stuck behind a drawer in the office — the company never received it. Looking back, I realized that even though I didn’t get that job, it led me to a series of adventures that shaped my life in unexpected and fulfilling ways. 4. What did winning the jumping competition bring to the writer? A. The faith in friendship. B. The acquisition of a new skill. C. The recognition of mother’s love. D. The determination to go adventuring. 5. How did the writer feel at first when Steve suggested learning to fly? A. Curious. B. Inspired. C. Desperate. D. Doubtful. 6. Why did the writer fail to receive any reply about the trick ride position? A. Because she forgot to sign the application. B. Because her application was not delivered. C. Because women were unfit for the position. D. Because the position had already been filled. 7. What can we learn from this passage? A. Smart plans make big dreams. B. The best journeys are not mapped. C. Doubt kills more goals than failure. D. Strong women create strong societies. C Standing in Nevada’s dry landscape, Project Red uses new methods to capture geothermal (地热) energy. Unlike old plants that need natural hot water storage areas near volcanoes, this facility uses Enhanced Geothermal Systems(EGS) to get heat from solid rock. Workers start by drilling two wells over 8,000 feet deep into rock hot enough to roast a turkey. Through the first well, high-pressure water is pumped down, breaking the rock to create paths. A key procedure involves drilling another 3,250-foot horizontal well to expand the area of hot rock that the system contacts — a technique used in oil and gas industry in order to maximize yield. Water moves through these man-made cracks for 24-48 hours, gathering heat until temperatures exceed 380°F. As heated water rises through the second well, pressure changes near the surface turn about 20% into steam. This steam powers machines connected to generators, creating clean electricity. Then the steam cools and condenses (凝结) back into hot water, which is used to heat a different kind of liquid with a much lower boiling point, such as butane, to drive a second generator before it is transported back to the system. This progress eliminates geothermal’s old obstacle of needing volcanic zones. Traditional plants simply collect steam from natural hot springs, while EGS establishes water storage in unreachable ground. Another feature of the system is that they can be made more profitable by taking advantage of energy price shifts. Operators could plug the exit wells, causing water to accumulate inside the system, building up pressure and heat. Then the energy could be extracted during times when it is most valuable — such as during cloudy or windless periods when solar or wind aren’t working. Some oil and gas companies, recognizing that the energy landscape is changing, are increasingly interested in building geothermal systems. There’s even a growing push to use direct geothermal heat to warm buildings, either through shallow heat pumps for residential buildings or integrated systems designed for entire districts — as Paris and Munich already do. 8. What is the main purpose of creating the second well? A. To speed up rock breaking. B. To improve the efficiency of heat transfer. C. To reduce drilling difficulty. D. To regulate the pressure inside the wells. 9. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2? A. Butane. B. Electricity. C. Water. D. Steam. 10. What can we infer from paragraph 3? A. EGS depends on specific ground types. B. Traditional plants will be replaced by EGS. C. Geothermal energy is a stable power source. D. EGS is more advanced than solar and wind. 11. What key development is mentioned in the last paragraph? A. Geothermal energy changing the landscape. B. Traditional energy losing competitiveness. C. Energy companies abandoning fossil fuel. D. Geothermal energy expanding applications. D People’s views are becoming increasingly polarized, with social bubbles (茧房) deepening existing beliefs and widening opinion gaps. This polarization doesn’t just apply to political opinions; it also touches on factual topics, from climate change to disease prevention. According to a recent study, people use search engines in ways that confirm their existing beliefs, potentially expanding polarization. A simple adjustment to search algorithms (算法), the researchers propose, could help deliver a broader range of perspectives. Online participants were asked to rate their beliefs on six topics, such as nuclear energy and the health effects of caffeine. They then chose search terms to learn more about each topic. The researchers rated the terms’ scope (范围) and found that between 9 and 34 percent were “narrow”. For example, when researching the health effects of caffeine, one participant used “caffeine negative effects” while others used “benefits of caffeine”. These narrow terms tended to match participants’ existing beliefs, and generally fewer than 10 percent did this knowingly. “Search algorithms are designed to give the most relevant answers for whatever we type, which ends up strengthening what we already thought,” says Eugina Leung from Tulane University, who led the study. Similar results appeared when participants used ChatGPT. When researchers randomly assigned participants to view different results, they found that the results affected people’s opinions and even behavior. For example, participants who saw results about “caffeine (咖啡因) health benefits”, rather than “risks”, were more likely to choose a caffeinated drink afterward. Pointing out biases in the search terms had only a small effect on people’s final opinions. However, changing the search algorithm to provide broader results helped reduce the effects of narrow searches. “People are able to bring in different perspectives when they’re exposed to them, which is encouraging,” Leung says. The researchers recommend applying such strategies, possibly as “search broadly” buttons. “This would be really helpful,” Leung says, but whether it will ever happen “is hard to predict.” 12. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1? A. Search engines create social bubbles. B. Public debates on factual topics become heated. C. Opinions are increasingly divided on political issues. D. Search habits are unknowingly expanding opinion gaps. 13. What is the feature of “narrow” search terms? A. They involve broader ideas. B. They follow social trends. C. They match popular beliefs. D. They strengthen established views. 14. What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 3? A. Caffeine benefits people’s health. B. ChatGPT provides objective information. C. Search results may influence users’ choices. D. Online searches reflect personal interests. 15. What is the researchers’ suggestion about? A. Approaches to broadening search results. B. Choice of new research methods. C. Techniques for identifying search biases. D. Necessity to involve more participants. Education isn’t simply about achieving a “higher state of knowledge”; it’s about equipping students with the tools they need to go out into the world and shape it for themselves. I look on in wonder as seemingly everyone is focused on their devices. I know I can’t change what the world has become. But as a college teacher, I can shape my classroom. When it comes to cellphones, I’ve learned that one cannot be tough on students using them in class. I once had a colleague who tried this, threatening punishment for violators. The rest of her semester was, in a word, unhappy. But neither do I think it productive to take a hands-off (放手不管的) attitude toward students who are texting friends while the poor teacher labors, ignored, at the blackboard. I knew a math professor who tried this approach. One day, I asked some of his students who their math teacher was. Their response: “Some guy.” Both examples suggested that there must be a middle way. So I came up with one. On the first day of class, I struck a friendly but purposeful tone, telling my students, “If I catch you looking at your phone during the class discussion, you must call your parents right then and there on speakerphone (免提) and tell them that you love them.” I delivered this with a twinkle in my eye, and my students chuckled good-naturedly. Then I followed up with my end of the bargain: “This means whenever you speak to me, I promise to give you my full attention.” When delivered in a caring but serious way, my students are on board. Well, mostly. There’s always an exception. His name was Paul Davis. He liked to test the waters of classroom norms (准则), like coming to class in his pajama bottoms and slippers. One day, during a lively class discussion, I caught Paul typing on his phone. “Excuse me,” I interrupted. “Are you texting?” Paul looked up from his phone. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mr. Davis’s voice came through on speakerphone, sounding quite surprised. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2024级高三年级质量监测 英语试卷 注意事项: 1. 1. 4. B 9. C 10. C 11. 根据第一段“A key procedure involves drilling another 3,250-foot horizontal well to expand the area of hot rock that the system contacts — a technique used in oil and gas industry in order to maximize yield. (一个关键步骤是再钻一口3250英尺的水平井,以扩大系统接触的热岩面积——这是石油和天然气行业为最大化产量而采用的一种技术。)”可知,钻第二口井的目的是扩大热岩接触面积,从而提高热量传递效率。故选B项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“Then the steam cools and condenses (凝结) back into hot water, which is used to heat a different kind of liquid with a much lower boiling point, such as butane, to drive a second generator before it is transported back to the system. (然后蒸汽冷却并凝结回热水,这些热水被用来加热另一种沸点低得多的液体,如丁烷,以驱动第二台发电机,然后才被输送回系统。)”可知,热水先被用来加热丁烷,之后才被输送回系统,所以it指代的是“热水”。故选C项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Operators could plug the exit wells, causing water to accumulate inside the system, building up pressure and heat. Then the energy could be extracted during times when it is most valuable — such as during cloudy or windless periods when solar or wind aren’t working. (操作人员可以堵住出口井,使水在系统内积聚,从而增加压力和热量。然后,可以在能源最有价值的时候提取能源,比如在太阳能或风能无法工作的阴天或无风期。)”可知,地热能源不受天气条件影响,可以稳定提供电力,是一种稳定的能源。故选C项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Some oil and gas companies, recognizing that the energy landscape is changing, are increasingly interested in building geothermal systems. There’s even a growing push to use direct geothermal heat to warm buildings, either through shallow heat pumps for residential buildings or integrated systems designed for entire districts — as Paris and Munich already do. (一些石油和天然气公司意识到能源格局正在发生变化,对建设地热系统的兴趣日益浓厚。甚至有越来越多的人推动使用直接地热来为建筑物供暖,要么通过住宅浅层热泵,要么通过为整个地区设计的综合系统——就像巴黎和慕尼黑已经做的那样。)”可知,地热能源的应用领域正在不断拓展。故选D项。 D People’s views are becoming increasingly polarized, with social bubbles (茧房) deepening existing beliefs and widening opinion gaps. D 13. D 14. C 15. 2】Xi’an was the capital of many dynasties, where you can see the Terracotta Warriors and the well-preserved ancient City Wall. I grew up before there were cellphones. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 Paul looked up from his phone. He got a little startled, then shrugged casually, claiming it was just a short text message. Curious classmates turned their heads, waiting to see what would happen next. I smiled gently and reminded him of our classroom rule. Soft laughter filled the classroom, and several classmates encouraged him to make the call. Paul’s face turned red with embarrassment. He hesitated for a while yet found no way to avoid it. Finally, he dialed his father’s number nervously, turned on the speakerphone and placed the phone on the desk. Mr. Davis’s voice came through on speakerphone, sounding quite surprised. He wondered why Paul rang him during class. Paul felt extremely awkward and mumbled that he just wanted to say he loved him. His father guessed this was some class punishment, making the whole class burst into loud laughter. Paul quickly hung up the phone in shame. From then on, Paul focused all his attention on lessons, and all students learned to put away their phones in class. My special rule worked perfectly. 打开:turn on /switch on ②. 放声大笑:burst into loud laughter/roar with laughter 【点睛】[高分句型1].
