Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), died on Thursday evening in Wuhan, Hubei province. Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honor, in 2019.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong province. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. There the young man learned about the communist revolution (共产主义革命) and joined the Communist Party of China in April 1949, right before his graduation. After receiving his bachelor’s diploma (学士学位证书), Huang started his lifelong career in China’s shipbuilding industry. In 1958, Huang was selected to join the research team tasked with designing China’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
At the beginning, Huang and his colleagues found that China lacked the basic conditions to develop such a sophisticated hardware technology (复杂的硬件技术). None of them had any knowledge in that field, and since other countries were extremely protective of such technologies, they hardly had any technical reference (参考) materials.
Huang and his colleagues started by scouring (搜寻) newspapers and magazines for information, which was very difficult to find and was either too fragmented (碎片化的) or hard to tell whether it was true or false.
The team members didn’t have any computers or digital calculators, so they used abacuses (算盘) and rulers to solve problems. Their work didn’t stop even from 1962 to 1965, when China was undergoing economic difficulties.
After years of painstaking (艰苦的) efforts, China finally built its first nuclear-powered submarine —the first Type 091—in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have such hardware.
Huang’s name remained classified until 1987 when a magazine in Shanghai was allowed to publish a report on him, which only disclosed his family name of Huang.
Even in his 90s, the designer used to visit his office every weekday morning to review and arranged materials of his know-how and experience, and would also give young researchers advice on technical issues (技术问题).

Poverty(贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary(普通的) people play a big role in the fight. Here are two of them.
Zhang Guimei has been helping girls pursue(追求) education since she traveled to Yunnan at the age of 17. As a teacher, Zhang was heartbroken when she saw her students quit school after finishing senior high school. They couldn’t go to college because their families couldn’t afford it. So in 2008, Zhang started a free school for poor girls. Since then, Zhang has been busy asking for donations to provide money for the school. She has convinced parents to send their daughters back to school. The school has sent more than 1,800 students to universities and colleges.
When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield(产量) was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capital income(人均收入) reached 12,670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.
Over the last eight years, 98.99 million rural people have been lifted out of poverty. The 832 counties (县) and 128,000 villages which these people live in are no longer in poverty. China has been responsible for reducing 70 percent of poverty world-wide since the late 1970s.

We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. However, there’s always something staring at us right under our nose but we don’t see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst.
When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult.
Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to finally unlock our self-improvement power not because the world says so but because we realize it’s for our own good.
Happy people don’t just accept change; they embrace (拥抱) it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.
Jane always tells everyone that she doesn’t have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!
Self-improvement may not be everybody’s favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we’re beginning to take things light and become happy.
31.The writer thinks the only time people think of unlocking their self-improvement power is ________ .
A.reaching a point B.being ready for change
C.not seeing it D.when it gets worse
32.The writer mentions the three questions in Paragraph 2. to________.
A.show his knowledge by more examples.
B.attract people’s attention and interest.
C.show us life fails us when we get into the wrong way.
D.tell us life is a long journey full of ups and downs.
33.What is the key to solving Jane’s problem?
A.She needs to remember why she started.
B.She has to know how to get on with people.
C.She has to realize she is not what she is in her story.
D.She needs to understand the importance of confidence.
34.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The world tells us how to improve ourselves.
B.People change when they find it easy to do that.
C.People fear change because they get used to the way they were.
D.Enjoying the process of self-improvement makes life simpler.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.To set free ourselves out of the box or to stay in it?
B.To hold on to the last moment or to give up?
C.Is it necessary to embrace challenges?
D.Is it important to take things light?

As young people, we should learn from the older generation of heroes like Huang.

C

C.People fear change because they get used to the way they were.
D.Enjoying the process of self-improvement makes life simpler.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!”可知,简一直相信自己没有勇气和人群相处,并且按照这种想法生活。所以解决简的问题的关键是她必须意识到她不是她所认为的那样,要改变这种想法。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.”可知,解锁自我提升能力意味着从我们原本的思维模式中解放出来,而害怕改变的人就是因为习惯了自己原本的样子。所以人们害怕改变是因为他们习惯了自己原本的方式。故选C。
