I use social media to… to keep in touch with my friends to learn what is going on in my friends’ lives to find out information about news stories for entertainment/fun to record my feelings and experiences through social media posts Activate and Share A teenage boy wrote a text, A Two-week Break from Social Media. What do you think he did? Why? What might happen to him during the two weeks? He quit social media for two weeks. Reasons:waste time /take up study time /less face-to-face communication Positive:more time for study and hobbies;talk with friends face to face Negative:miss friends’ messages /miss parties and group chats 03 While-reading Social media is very popular nowadays and it’s hard to imagine living without it. One day, I decided to find out how long I spent using it, and I was shocked when I realised I was spending three to four hours a day on it! It was stealing the time that I should spend on schoolwork and other interests, so I made the decision to quit social media for two weeks. At first, I was worried that I might be forgotten by my friends. After all, the main way we keep in touch outside school is through social media posts and messages. To my surprise, I was actually contacted more often by my friends! They made a special effort to call me and we ended up having more face-to-face conversations. We felt closer than ever before. And then I was amazed at how much more free time I had. Three or four hours a day certainly adds up — that’s up to 28 extra hours a week! So quitting social media made me feel like I had an extra day a week to spend on my schoolwork and hobbies. I did better in my last test and my guitar teacher was impressed with how much I practised. However, I missed a few things without social media too, like a classmate’s birthday party and a chat about a group project. What a pity! Now, I’m back on social media, but I’ve learnt my lesson: using social media is fine, but spending hours a day on it is a big waste of time! So I got a new app on my phone. It will be shut down by itself after I spend more than 20 minutes on social media. Honestly, it has changed my life! Do you know how long you spend on social media each day? Could you quit it? Why not have a try and see what happens? Fast reading What’s the genre(体裁)of the passage?
