Text 1
W: The news about the female truck driver encourages me a lot. I’m confident that I’ll pass the pilot qualifying examination.
M: Just go for it. I’m also studying hard to get my law practice license.
Text 2
W: Why did Tom quit the job?
M: He said his present job had no future.
W: If he does not change his attitude towards his work, I don’t think a new job can make any difference.
Text 3
M: We collected 18 kilos of paper last week. Not bad.
W: Better, but the goal was 25. Let’s place a collection box outside the lecture hall.
M: Smart. I’ll make a poster that says “One Sheet Helps”.
Text 4
W: How did your interview go this morning? You left in such a hurry!
M: Honestly, it was smoother than I expected. The questions were fair, and I’d prepared well.
W: So you think you’ll get an offer?
M: I hope so — unless they mind that I was 10 minutes early! The subway was faster than I thought.
Text 5
M: Hey, Susan, we need some new blood. Could you please draft a job advertisement?
W: Sure, Greg. What details should it include?
M: Just cover the position, qualifications and the application process and the deadline for hiring is next Friday. Thanks a lot.
Text 6
W: Have you heard that the contract has been canceled?
M: Yes. You must be really annoyed after all the work you put into it!
W: Yes, I was. The client was really positive about it, but they were in some financial difficulty.
M: It was a huge contract, wasn’t it? What are you going to do now?
W: Well, we’ve just had a big order from another client, so that’s taken the pressure off!
Text 7
M: Come along with me. I’ll show you around the house.
W: Thank you. I’m a bit nervous, to be honest. I’ve never worked in such a big house before. There are so many rooms and even a big garden!
M: Yes, it is rather large, but I’m sure you’ll soon get used to it. You’ll need to know every inch of the building, as you’ll be cleaning different rooms and generally helping wherever needed. Here is the living room.
W: What an amazing room! That television is like a cinema screen. And look at all the fine furniture! I bet this house is worth more than a million dollars.
M: Actually, the owner bought it for four million dollars back in 2015, but it is worth twice that much now. Let me now show you to your room.
Text 8
W: Hello, Mr. Hobbs. Can you introduce yourself first?
M: Sure. I graduated from college about a decade ago, and I worked for four companies after graduation.
W: Why did you quit your last job?
M: Well, the job was not challenging and the pay was not very good.
W: I see. What are your strengths?
M: I can speak Italian and English very well. I can also speak a little German and French. Besides, I think I have good leadership skills. I led a sales team in my second job. I’m skilled in training sales staff and I can get along with customers. I’m very responsible and I can accept long working hours.
W: Good. What about your weaknesses?
M: I have to say, I’m not patient enough when other colleagues don’t meet the deadlines.
W: I see. Do you have any questions for us?
M: Let me see…
Text 9
W: I had the “perfect” corporate career: title, salary, corner office. But every Sunday night, I’d get this sinking feeling. I wasn’t creating anything; I was just managing spreadsheets.
M: That’s a common dilemma. How did you break away?
W: I quit without a plan — terrifying. For three months, I just walked shelter dogs. It cleared my head. Then, on a whim, I signed up for a ceramics workshop. The feeling of shaping clay with my hands... it was transformative.
M: And now you run your own studio.
W: Exactly. It’s unstable, and I earn half what I used to. But the joy of seeing an idea born in my mind become a physical object in my hands... that’s priceless. I own my creativity now.
Text 10
W: Hello, everybody. My name’s Ann. Thanks for turning up to listen to me talk about my career. I hope that some of you will decide to take up nursing in the future because it is a fantastic job. First of all, I’ll tell you a little bit about how I got started. I had no idea what I wanted to do until I was about 14, when I was listening to a family conversation. My cousin was talking to my dad and telling him all about how much she enjoyed her work. She was a nurse in a busy hospital. And I thought, yeah, that’s exactly what I’d like to do. When I told my teachers that’s what I decided, they were very encouraging. But they did say that although I had always got good marks in English and biology, I’d have to get a little better at math, or I wouldn’t be able to do the job. Well, I must say, it wasn’t easy being a student nurse. It involved lots of late nights staying up to do my coursework. But I’d known it would be like that. Anyway, I think I have one of the best jobs in the world. My sister is an accountant, and although she earns far more than I do, I think my job is much more rewarding.
