My Journey with Woodworking
Hello, I’m Sam. When I was young, my grandfather taught me about woodworking. We built birdhouses, small tables, and wooden toys together in his workshop. It was always a wonderful time! Over the years, woodworking has given me many happy memories and taught me valuable skills.
Woodworking is enjoyable, but it isn’t always easy. Some mistakes, like measuring the wood incorrectly, using the wrong tool, or not sanding the surface properly, can make me feel disappointed. However, I always learn from these mistakes. Whenever I have problems, I watch online tutorials and ask experienced woodworkers for advice. Step by step, I have become much better at woodworking.
Woodworking is more than just a hobby for me. I can create useful things for my home — shelves, frames, and even a small table. The things I make are more special than those bought from shops. When I’m in the workshop, I focus only on the work and forget about everything else. Cutting, sanding, and joining pieces of wood bring me peace and satisfaction. Woodworking also gives me a way to be creative. I can design my own projects and create something unique. Every time I finish a piece, I feel like an artist!
I hope you’ll try woodworking too! It takes patience and practice, but the results are worth it. My grandfather often said, “A good craftsman takes pride in his work.”
1. Who taught Sam about woodworking?
A. His father. B. His grandfather.
C. His teacher. D. His uncle.
2. Which of the following is a mistake in woodworking according to the passage?
A. Measuring wood carefully. B. Using the right tool.
C. Measuring wood incorrectly. D. Sanding the surface properly.
3. What does Sam do when he has problems in woodworking?
A. He gives up woodworking.
B. He only practises more.
C. He watches tutorials and asks experienced woodworkers.
D. He asks his grandfather for help.
4. What do Sam’s grandfather’s words mean in the last paragraph?
A. Woodworking takes a lot of money.
B. Taking pride in your work is important.
C. Love is more important than woodworking.
D. Family helps us learn new skills.
5. Where can we probably find this passage?
A. A book about cooking. B. A guide about travelling.
C. A storybook about animals. D. A magazine about hobbies.

Essential DIY Tools for Beginners
Starting your DIY journey can be exciting but also confusing. There are so many tools to choose from. Here are four essential tools that every beginner should have. With these tools, you can start most basic DIY projects.
Hammer
A hammer is one of the most basic and useful tools. It is used for driving nails into wood, wall, or other materials. When choosing a hammer, look for one with a comfortable grip (握柄) and a weight that feels right for you. A 400-500g hammer is usually good for beginners. Remember: always hold the hammer near the end of the handle for better control and power.
Screwdriver Set
A screwdriver set includes both flat-head and Phillips-head (十字) drivers in different sizes. You will need them for assembling furniture, tightening screws, and many other tasks. A set with interchangeable heads is a space-saving choice. Make sure the magnetic tips are strong enough to hold screws in place while you work.
Measuring Tape
“Measure twice, cut once” is a famous rule in DIY. A good measuring tape (at least 5 metres) is essential for getting your measurements right. Look for a tape with clear markings and a locking mechanism (锁定装置) so it stays in place when you need it. Accurate measurements are the key to successful projects.
Utility Knife
A utility knife is perfect for cutting cardboard, rope, carpet, and other materials. Choose a knife with a retractable blade (可伸缩刀片) for safety. Always cut away from your body and replace the blade when it becomes dull. A sharp blade is safer than a dull one because it requires less force and is less likely to slip.
