Wood Carving in a Small Village
In a small village in Zhejiang Province, wood carving has been passed down for generations. The craft is known for its fine details, smooth surfaces, and beautiful patterns. In 2021, it was added to the provincial intangible cultural heritage list.
Master Chen, who is 67 years old, has been carving wood for over 50 years. He says the most important step is choosing the right wood. “We use mostly camphor wood (樟木) and boxwood (黄杨木),” he explains. “The wood must be dry and free of cracks. If the wood is not good, the whole piece will be ruined.”
The carving process has many steps. First, the wood is cut into the rough shape. Then, the carver uses different tools to create details. Small chisels (凿子) and knives are used for fine work. After the carving is done, the piece is polished (打磨) with sandpaper until it is smooth and shiny. Finally, a coat of wax is applied to protect the wood and bring out its natural beauty.
Master Chen’s work has attracted many young people. His daughter, Chen Mei, decided to learn the craft from him. “At first, I thought it was too difficult,” she says. “My hands hurt, and I made many mistakes. But my father never gave up on me. Now I can create my own pieces. I want to share this art with more people.”

Prefixes: Un-, In-, Im-, Dis-
Prefixes are letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning. Some prefixes give words a negative or opposite meaning. Here are four common negative prefixes and how they are used.
Un-
The prefix “un-” is the most common negative prefix. It can be added to many adjectives and verbs. For example: “unhappy” means not happy; “unlock” means to open something that was locked; “unusual” means not usual or common. Use “un-” for most words that don’t fit the other prefixes.
In-
The prefix “in-” is used with many words that come from Latin. For example: “invisible” means not visible; “incomplete” means not complete; “incorrect” means not correct. However, “in-” changes form before certain letters. Before “b”, “m”, or “p”, it becomes “im-”; before “l”, it becomes “il-”; before “r”, it becomes “ir-”.
Im-
The prefix “im-” is used before words starting with “b”, “m”, or “p”. For example: “impossible” means not possible; “impatient” means not patient; “impolite” means not polite. Remember: if a word starts with “b”, “m”, or “p”, use “im-” instead of “in-”.
Dis-
The prefix “dis-” is often used with verbs and some adjectives. For example: “dislike” means not like; “disagree” means not agree; “dishonest” means not honest. “Dis-” usually shows a stronger opposite meaning than “un-”. It can also mean “do the opposite of”.
