情境创设
T shows the title “Hitting the road” and travel pictures, then greets the class and asks: Hello class! Today we’ll talk about travelling. What do you know about travelling?
S1: Hello teacher! I know travelling means going to different places to visit and have fun.
S2: People can take different cars or planes to travel around the world.
T: Great answers! Now let’s look at the picture with the title. What can you see in it?
S3: I can see two people with backpacks on their backs. They look like they are going on a trip.
T: Perfect! What do you think the phrase “Hitting the road” means here?
S4: I think it means starting or leaving for a journey.
T: Exactly right! Now let’s think about one more question: Why do people love taking a journey so much?
S5: Because they can eat delicious local food and see beautiful scenery.
S6: They can also meet different people and experience different cultures.
T: Wonderful! And here’s a real task for us: Our new exchange friend Alex is coming to China soon and he plans to travel here. He needs our help as his little travel guides. So our unit task is to share our unforgettable travel experiences with him and design a great travel plan for him. Let’s start our interesting learning today!
学习任务 1:Learn travel quotes and talk about the benefits of travel
T: First, let’s look at three famous travel quotes from Xunzi, Seneca and Gustave Flaubert. Let’s read them together loudly. Ready? Go!
Ss: You will not know the height of the sky if you do not climb a high mountain... Travel and change of place refresh the mind... Travelling can help you realise how small you are in the world...
T: Good job! Now there are three meanings for the quotes: A-Lift our spirits, B-Understand ourselves better, C-Know more about the world. Who can match them correctly?
S1: Teacher, I can! Xunzi’s quote is C, Seneca’s is A, Flaubert’s is B.T: You’re totally right! Clap your hands for him. Now discuss with your deskmate for 2 minutes: Which quote do you agree with most? And why? You can talk about the benefits of travel.(2 minutes later)
T: Time’s up! Who wants to share your ideas with the class?
S2: I agree with Xunzi’s quote most, because it tells us travel can help us broaden our horizon and know more about the world.
S3: I agree with Seneca’s quote. When we feel tired of study, travel can refresh our mind and lift our spirits.
T: Excellent views! Travel really brings us a lot of good things.
学习任务 2:Learn transportation and places of interest expressions
T: Next, let’s learn how to talk about travel ways and famous places. First, look at the pictures of different transportation. What can you see?

T: Great! Let’s learn the English expressions: by plane/by air, take a plane, fly; by high-speed train, take a high-speed train; by taxi, take a taxi. Let’s practice the first sentence: We can travel ______. Who can fill in the blank?
S2: We can travel by plane.
S3: We can travel by high-speed train.T: Perfect! Now the second sentence: We can __________ to travel.
S4: We can take a taxi to travel.

S7: The Eiffel Tower (埃菲尔铁塔), Big Ben (大本钟), the Statue of Liberty (自由女神像).
T: Excellent! Let’s practice the sentence: We can go to/visit ______.
S8: We can visit the Canton Tower.
S9: We can go to the Pyramids.
T: Good job! Now do you know the book Around the World in Eighty Days?
Ss: Yes! / No, teacher.
T: It’s a very famous travel book. The hero is Phileas Fogg. He set a big goal to travel around the world in eighty days and he hit the road at last. Now let’s watch a short video clip about it, and answer two questions:
1. How did the characters travel?
2. Did Fogg give up when meeting problems?(After watching the video)
T: Who can answer the first question?
S1: They travelled by train, steamship, sledge, and even by elephant!
T: Great! You watched carefully. What about the second question?
S2: Fogg didn’t give up at all. He kept trying even when he met many difficult problems.
T: Perfect! What do you think of Fogg?
S3: He is very brave and persistent. We should learn from him.
学习任务 3:Pre-reading about the writer’s Chengdu trip
T: Good! Now let’s come to our key part today: a wonderful travel story about Chengdu. First, let’s brainstorm: If you have a chance to go to Chengdu, what can you do there?
S1: I can eat delicious Sichuan hot pot and see cute giant pandas.
S2: I can walk on the busy streets and visit old museums to see interesting cultural things.T: Wonderful ideas! Now look at two pictures: one is Sichuan hot pot, the other is masks in Sanxingdui Museum. What can you see and how do you feel about them?
S3: I can see peppers and a hot pot. It’s hot and spicy, it’s about Sichuan diet.
S4: I can see amazing ancient masks. It’s cool and fantastic, it’s about Shu culture.
T: Great observations! Now guess: What did the writer do in Chengdu? Did he have fun and enjoy himself during the trip?
S5: I think the writer ate Sichuan hot pot and visited Sanxingdui Museum. And he must have had a great time.T: Is that right? Let’s check our guess. Now read the passage quickly for 3 minutes, and answer two questions:
1. What did the writer eat and see in Chengdu?
2. What kind of text is it? A-daily blog, B-food story, C-travelling diary, D-cultural poster.(After quick reading)
T: Time’s up! Who can answer the questions?
S1: The writer ate Sichuan hot pot and saw the masks in Sanxingdui Museum. And it’s a travelling diary, so the answer is C.
T: You’re totally right! Good reading speed.
学习任务 4:While-reading - Understand the passage in depth
T: Excellent! Now let’s read the passage carefully and finish the mind map about the writer’s “hot” and “cool” experiences in Chengdu. There are some blanks for you to fill in. You have 4 minutes.(4 minutes later)
T: Let’s check the answers together. First, the “hot” experiences part: I wanted to try ______.
Ss: Sichuan hot pot!
T: The food made ______ burn.
Ss: my mouth!
T: And I ______ all my tea.
Ss: drank!
T: Then I started to ______ the taste
.Ss: enjoy!
T: And cooking hot pot was as fun as eating it.

Ss: cool!
T: The masks were ______.
Ss: fantastic!
T: I had so many questions about the ______.
Ss: masks!
T: I didn’t want to leave the ______.
Ss: museum!
T: The last one: My first day in China was ______.
Ss: full of fun!
T: Perfect! All of you did a good job. Now let’s answer some comprehension questions. First: Did the writer really want to stay in the museum for a week?
S1: No, teacher. He just used this expression to show that he loved the museum very much and wanted to explore more things there.
T: Great answer! You understand the writer’s feeling. Second: What makes Sanxingdui cool?
S2: The masks there are fantastic with big eyes and big ears, and Sanxingdui is a very interesting cultural place with a long history.
T: Good! Third: What writing technique did the writer use in the passage? A-pun, B-contrast.
S3: It’s B-contrast! Because the writer talks about the “hot” Sichuan hot pot and the “cool” Sanxingdui Museum to make the story interesting.
T: Exactly right! Now let’s tick the correct ideas in the passage, and we can find the passage has three clear parts: hot experiences in Chengdu, cool experiences in Chengdu, and the conclusion of the trip.

T: Time’s up! Who wants to retell the passage in front of the class?

S3: Yes, I’d love to! Because I really want to try the spicy Sichuan hot pot and see the cute pandas in Chengdu.
