One evening in California, while helping my daughter, Julianna, prepare for a yard sale, I stepped carelessly between the wooden boards and felt the floor give way beneath me. I had grown used to that sinking feeling ever since losing my wife, Amy, to cancer in 2024-the sight of an old cup could suddenly make my world fall apart. But this time, I was falling for real. Julianna shouted, “Daddy, get out now!” After a hard struggle, I finally pulled myself out.
As I walked downstairs, I thought about how differently Amy would have dealt with things. She had always been the family’s guide — calm and dependable — while I was careless and always depended on her to keep my life in order. After she was gone, I tried to become a focused solo parent, yet I kept making mistakes. I forgot rubbish night until it attracted huge wild animals; I burned carrots until smoke filled the kitchen; I even let our WiFi get disconnected, and Julianna asked, “You’re pretty bad at this, aren’t you?”
Her words made me think. That was when I began to understand that bravery — the kind Amy had always shown — was not about avoiding mistakes, but about facing them when it mattered most.
The morning after I fell, I discovered that someone had covered Julianna’s yard sale signs with red tape (胶带). Without thinking twice, I walked down the street and caught a young man who told me he did it for “friendly competition”, but this time I stood my ground. To my surprise, people nearby gathered and spoke ill of him. When I told Julianna what happened, she laughed and said, “Now you’re getting embarrassing.” But I didn’t mind. For the first time, I understood that bravery did not belong only to my wife — It had been inside me all along. This has been the hardest year of my life, but I am learning that laughter is how we tell ourselves we might get through this together.

When French writer Cedric Duroux topped an Icelandic mountain in 2018, he first thought it was breathtakingly beautiful — until one of the guides gently told him that everything around him used to be a glacier (冰川). This was when he truly realized how serious climate change was.
In recent years, more tourists have started seeking similar experiences by visiting landscapes that may soon disappear because of climate change. Known as last-chance tourism, this “see-it-before-it’s-gone” practice is contentious (有争议的): research suggests that the fuel (燃料) needed to travel to these places may actually speed up their disappearance, while supporters say that, done responsibly, it can inspire travelers to protect these places.
The negative impacts of overtourism on fragile (脆弱的) ecosystems are well documented. As the seas warm and gas-powered boats bring more people to the Great Barrier Reef, the area has experienced its worst coral bleaching As more tourists travel to Antarctica every year, they risk introducing harmful species that threaten its ecosystem.
Still, last-chance tourism isn’t likely to go away. Robin Craig, an environmental protection professor, argues that guides and park managers should turn travelers’ emotions — from wonder to sadness — into action to help preserve these sites, yet they are not prepared. So right now, much of the responsibility still falls on the tourists themselves. Craig suggests that travelers consider three things: Are they traveling in an environmentally friendly way? Are their activities harming the place they visit? And what protective actions will they take once back home?
In Antarctica, for example, guide Ashley Perrin recommends that travelers look for tour operators that limit landing sites based on wildlife activity. During the trip, travelers can further support protection by contributing to scientific research — tracking clouds and weather, gathering data on bird migrations (迁徙) and mapping waste in the landscape. Perrin says that people won’t protect what they don’t know. “We need people to go and see these environments in order to fall in love with them — in order to protect them.”
28. What made Cedric Duroux deeply aware of severe climate change?
A. Some research results about global glacier melting.
B. The breathtaking scenery of an Icelandic mountain.
C. A guide’s warning about dangerous mountain climbing.
D. The disappearing glacier around the mountain he climbed.
29. Why are the Great Barrier Reef and Antarctica mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate their attraction. B. To compare their ecosystems.
C. To show the damage of mass tourism. D. To stress the impact of climate change.
30. Which of the following is suggested to help preserve the sites like Antarctica?
A. Aiding with data collection. B. Limiting the tourist number.
C. Funding scientific research. D. Closing the sites to tourists.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Last-Chance Tourism: Now or Never
B. Climate Change: Reshapes Final Frontier
C. Climate Change: A Challenge for Tourism
D. Last-Chance Tourism: From Seeing to Saving
D 29. C 30. A 31. D

根据第一段“When French writer Cedric Duroux topped an Icelandic mountain in 2018, he first thought it was breathtakingly beautiful — until one of the guides gently told him that everything around him used to be a glacier. This was when he truly realized how serious climate change was. (2018年,法国作家塞德里克・杜鲁登上冰岛一座山峰时,起初只觉得景色美得令人窒息,直到一位向导轻声告诉他,他四周曾经全部都是冰川。就在这一刻,他真正意识到气候变化有多严峻。)” 可知,是他所攀登的山峰周围正在消失的冰川让他深刻意识到了严重的气候变化。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The negative impacts of overtourism on fragile ecosystems are well documented. As the seas warm and gas-powered boats bring more people to the Great Barrier Reef, the area has experienced its worst coral bleaching. As more tourists travel to Antarctica every year, they risk introducing harmful species that threaten its ecosystem. (过度旅游给脆弱生态系统带来的负面影响已有大量记载。随着海洋升温,燃油船只运送大量游客前往大堡礁,这片区域遭遇了史上最严重的珊瑚白化现象。每年前往南极洲的游客不断增多,外来有害物种随之被带入,威胁当地生态系统。)”可知,提及大堡礁和南极是为了说明大规模旅游对脆弱生态的破坏。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“During the trip, travelers can further support protection by contributing to scientific research — tracking clouds and weather, gathering data on bird migrations and mapping waste in the landscape. (旅途之中,游客还可以助力保护工作,参与科研项目:观测云层与天气、收集鸟类迁徙数据、实地标记区域垃圾。)”可知,协助收集数据是被建议的、有助于保护南极这类景点的行为。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文并结合第二段“In recent years, more tourists have started seeking similar experiences by visiting landscapes that may soon disappear because of climate change. Known as last-chance tourism, this ‘see-it-before-it’s-gone’ practice is contentious: research suggests that the fuel needed to travel to these places may actually speed up their disappearance, while supporters say that, done responsibly, it can inspire travelers to protect these places.
D
The science of why insects gather around lights at night has never been nailed down. Popular theories propose that moths and other insects navigate (导航) by the moon and mistake lamps for moonlight, or that the insects fly towards light to escape coming danger. Now researchers believe they have a more persuasive answer: contrary to current theories, insects are not attracted to light from far away, but become trapped if they fly close to an artificial (人造的) light source.
According to Dr Sam Fabian, study co-author and Imperial College London entomologist, moths and many other insects that fly at night evolved to tilt (倾斜) their backs to wherever is brightest. For hundreds of millions of years, this was the sky rather than the ground. The trick told insects which way was up and ensured they flew level. But then came artificial lighting. Moths found themselves tilting their backs to street lamps. This caused them to circle around the lamps endlessly, the insects trapped by their evolution.
Fabian and his colleagues filmed insect flight paths around lights in the lab. The videos reveal that time and again, moths and dragonflies turned their backs to artificial lights, which appeared to greatly change their flight paths. If the light is above them, they might start circling it, but if it’s behind them, they start tilting backwards and end up flying in circles or diving toward the ground.
Researchers have long warned that light pollution is a big driving force in the dramatic decline in insect populations. Moths and other insects that become trapped around lamps become easily caught by bats. The artificial lighting can also fool them into thinking it is daytime, causing them to bed down and skip a night’s feeding.
There are, Fabian believes, helpful lessons from the research. “What this tells us is that the direction of artificial light matters. Could we change lighting environments to not trap insects? For we’re facing a massive decline in insects around the world, and artificial light at night is one of the factors that could potentially be leading to this decline,” Fabian said.
32. What do the underlined words “nailed down” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Popularized widely. B. Discussed openly.
C. Defined accurately. D. Explored academically.
33. Fabian’s study found that moths circle around the lamps endlessly because ________.
A. they can’t keep their balance B. they use improper flight attitude
C. they lose track of which way is up D. they are attracted to lights from far away
34. What is the significance of the research finding?
A. It may lead to better protection of insects.
B. Natural enemies of insects will be got rid of.
C. Artificial lighting will be greatly reduced at night.
D. It may raise concerns for insects’ eating behavior.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why insects lose their ability to fly at night.
B. Why insects get trapped by artificial light.
C. How artificial light impacts insect populations.
D. How insects evolved distinct strategies of flight.
C 33. C 34. A 35. B
根据文章第一段“The science of why insects gather around lights at night has never been nailed down.
根据文章第二段“According to Dr Sam Fabian, study co-author and Imperial College London entomologist, moths and many other insects that fly at night evolved to tilt (倾斜) their backs to wherever is brightest.
根据文章最后一段“There are, Fabian believes, helpful lessons from the research. ‘What this tells us is that the direction of artificial light matters. Could we change lighting environments to not trap insects? For we’re facing a massive decline in insects around the world, and artificial light at night is one of the factors that could potentially be leading to this decline,’ Fabian said. (费比安认为这项研究有一些有益的教训。‘这项研究说明,人造光源的照射方向至关重要。我们能否改造照明环境,不再困住昆虫?全球昆虫数量正大幅锐减,夜间人造光正是造成这种减少的潜在因素之一。’费比安说道。)”可推知,该研究成果能指导人们优化照明环境,从而更好地保护昆虫。
【35题详解】

【36题详解】
根据本空前的“Flextime is a flexible hours schedule in which employees choose their own working hours, usually working within approximate limits set by the employer or by the government.”
根据本空后的“For example, people can use flextime to create schedules which will allow them to go to school, handle childcare, assist relatives, and perform other tasks.”

根据本空前的“Most flextime schedules include core time.”
根据本空前的“Flextime can also be combined with flexplace, in which the environment is better than that of the office.”

A. they can’t keep their balance B. they use improper flight attitude
C. they lose track of which way is up D. they are attracted to lights from far away

A. It may lead to better protection of insects.
B. Natural enemies of insects will be got rid of.
C. Artificial lighting will be greatly reduced at night.
D. It may raise concerns for insects’ eating behavior.
35. What is the text mainly about?
