Many schools closed because of the fire. While most kids were happy to relax and enjoy a longer summer vacation, ten-year-old Leo had a bigger plan. After his family lost their home and had to move into a van (货车) with their dog, Leo wanted to help them start over. He decided to mow the lawn (修剪草坪) with an old push mower without gas or electricity. At first, it was just a simple $10-per-lawn summer job. But it quickly turned into something much bigger. When neighbors heard Leo’s story and knew he was using a manual (手工的) mower to keep things quiet and clean, they supported him a lot. Some paid $100 or more for a single yard; others simply gave money to encourage him. His classmates also heard about what he was doing and were deeply moved. On hot days, they even brought him cold drinks in reusable bottles. “They are proud of me for working in a green way,” Leo said. His mother was not surprised. “Leo is an amazing kid who cares about nature and always wants to help others — and protect our planet, too,” she said. “I’m really lucky.” So far, Leo has raised $1500 and mowed 30 lawns. It is widely known that hybrid breeding helps the new plants get the best qualities. As we see, Yuan Longping’s hybrid rice has fed a large number of Chinese people. But hybrid breeding traditionally needs workers repeatedly to do cross-pollination (异花授粉) in a short time. It takes a lot of time and energy. GEAIR solves the problem. The robot uses AI visual (视觉的) recognition and positioning technology when moving among crops by itself. After finding flowers, it depends on robotic arms to perform cross-pollination exactly. Because of thick leaves and small flowers, traditional computer algorithms (算法) cannot easily notice them in real time. To solve this, the research team, led by Xu Cao, trained a new model using 12,800 pictures of flowers. This allows GEAIR to pollinate a flower in 15 seconds, at a cost much lower than a worker’s yearly pay. What’s more, researchers first used gene editing (基因编辑) to redesign the structure of crop flowers for rapidly creating new flowers which are friendly to hybrid seed production by robot. This is part of their crop-robot co-design idea. Its application in bean breeding has been put into practice. Based on biotechnology, powered by AI and operated by robots, the achievement symbolizes China has taken the lead in increasing the crop production. Reviewers of the book Cell praised the robot, expecting this exciting and innovative invention will prove its value across different crops in the future. 36. What is the main problem of traditional hybrid breeding? A. It takes less time. B. It costs little money. C. It requires more energy. D. It needs special weather. 37. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The cost of AI. B. The number of pictures. C. The function of the robotic arms. D. The working process of GEAIR robot. 38. What is the “crop-robot co-design” idea? A. It trains farmers to use robots. B. It replaces farmers with robots. C. It makes robots plant more seeds alone. D. It redesigns crops to help robots work better. 39. What does the underlined word “innovative” in the last paragraph mean? A. Creative. B. Cheap. C. Rapid. D. Traditional. 40. Which would be the best title for the text? A. AI: A Breeding Helper B. GEAIR: A Robotic Breeder C. Gene Editing in Plant Breeding D. The Difficulties in Plant Breeding 【答案】36. C 37. D 38. D 39. If you often want to learn more about something, then you probably are. But as American researcher Perry Zurn points out, not all curious minds are cut from the same cloth. There are at least three styles of curiosity (好奇心): “busybodies”, “hunters” and “dancers”. “Busybodies” like to collect lots of information on all kinds of topics. They’re not looking for any certain goal. Rather, they’re just interested in the world around them. “Hunters,” by contrast, go after detailed answers. They follow a clear path to reach their goals. “Dancers” jump at new ideas or mix old ones in new ways. They prefer to take the road less traveled. Zurn and his team went on to see how these curiosity styles play in real life. They focused on readers of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia (维基百科). Their research included 482, 000 people from 50 countries. For each person, the team looked at how many different topics he or she read about and how closely those topics were connected. The results showed that all three types of curious minds are among today’s internet users. “Busybodies” read widely, but they especially liked sports, food and the arts. “Hunters” cared more about science and technology. Interestingly, they were more likely to feel stressed than the other two types after their curious hunt. That’s probably because they had a stronger drive to fill in the blanks in their knowledge. Zurn says we are each born with a natural curiosity style. However, our style isn’t set in stone. We can develop the other two styles by spending time with teachers or friends who think differently. That’s good news. After all, curiosity works best when all three styles are in one mind. 41. How does the writer start the text? A. By telling a fact. B. By asking a question. C. By telling a story. D. By using an old saying. 42. How are “hunters” different from the other two styles of curiosity? A. They search a new path. B. They follow a clear goal. C. They take untraveled paths. D. They collect broad knowledge. 43. What did the team focus on when studying curiosity styles? A. The topics that people read about. B. The large number of Wikipedia users. C. The time that people spend online. D. The social behaviors of Wikipedia users. 44. If Tim likes doing sports and reading a lot, he is likely to be a “_________”. A. busybody B. hunter C. dancer D. researcher 45. Why does the author write this text? A. To explain why hunters feel more stressed. B. To show how Wikipedia helps curiosity study. C. To teach readers how to become more curious. D. To show curiosity can be shaped and developed. 【答案】41. B 42. B 43. A 44. A 45. The Difficulties in Plant Breeding D Are you a curious person? 第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后所给的五个选项中选出能填入短文空白处的最佳选项,使短文通顺、连贯,意思完整。(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) E Roadmap to a Healthy Brain Keep a balanced diet.
