Heroes in Daily Life
When we think of heroes, we often imagine famous people like scientists or athletes. But heroes can be found in our daily lives as well. Ordinary people who show extraordinary courage, kindness, and dedication are just as worthy of our admiration.
One such hero is Mr. Zhang, a bus driver in a small city. One morning, he noticed a passenger collapse. He immediately called for help and performed CPR until the ambulance arrived. His quick action saved the passenger’s life. When asked about it, he simply said, “I did what anyone would do.”
Another example is Miss Liu, a teacher in a rural school. She walks three kilometers every day to reach her school, rain or shine. She has been teaching for over 20 years and has helped hundreds of children receive an education. Many of her students have gone on to attend college.
These everyday heroes remind us that greatness is not always about fame or wealth. It is about having the courage to act and the will to help others. They inspire us to be better versions of ourselves.

The Dragon Boat Festival is not only celebrated in China, but also winning hearts overseas. In recent years, more and more foreign cities have held their own dragon boat races, turning this 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition into a global event.
In Markham, Canada, the annual dragon boat festival has been held for over 30 years. Every June, hundreds of teams from local schools, companies and communities gather at the lake. “At first, people came just for fun,” said Li Wei, a Chinese-Canadian organizer. “But now many locals can tell you the story of Qu Yuan, and some even wrap zongzi by themselves.”
Similar scenes can be seen in Australia, the UK and the US. In New York, the dragon boat race on the Hudson River attracts over 30,000 spectators each year. Interestingly, some teams paint their boats with patterns mixing Chinese dragons and local totems (图腾), creating a special “cross-cultural” style.
However, not everything goes smoothly. Some young Chinese overseas worry that the festival is losing its “taste”—fewer people remember why we hang ai cao (艾草)or drink realgar wine (雄黄酒). “Racing is cool, but we shouldn’t forget the meaning behind it—remembering ancestors and cherishing health,” said Chen Meng, a 15-year-old student in London.
To pass on the real spirit, many overseas Chinese communities have added new activities: teaching kids to weave colorful threads, telling the Qu Yuan story in bilingual (双语的)shows, and even holding online zongzi-making classes. “Tradition doesn’t have to stay in the past,” Li Wei smiled. “It grows wherever Chinese people go.”
23.How long has the Dragon Boat Festival been held in Markham, Canada?
A.For about 10 years. B.For over 20 years.

24.What does the underlined word “spectators” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.参赛者 B.观众 C.组织者 D.裁判
25.What do some young overseas Chinese worry about?
A.Dragon boat races are too dangerous.
B.The festival is becoming too commercial.
C.Fewer people remember the cultural meaning of the festival.
D.Local people don’t like Chinese food.
26.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Make Zongzi in Foreign Countries B.The Story of Qu Yuan Abroad
C.Dragon Boat Festival: Racing Across Borders D.Why Young People Love Dragon Boat Races
D
Some people think that in the modern world, we only need to learn from modern scientists. They believe ancient thinkers like Confucius or Mozi are no longer useful. However, I strongly disagree.
Ancient thinkers’ ideas are still valuable today. Confucius taught us to be kind and respect others, which is the basis of a harmonious society. Mozi advocated for peace and love, a message the world still needs. These ideas do not expire; they guide our behavior and help us become better people.
Moreover, learning from ancient thinkers can inspire modern innovation. Many modern scientists say that the curiosity and deep thinking of ancient philosophers inspired them to explore the unknown.
In conclusion, while modern science helps us understand the physical world, ancient wisdom helps us understand ourselves. We should look up to both ancient thinkers and modern scientists.
27.What is the writer’s main opinion?
A.Modern scientists are more important than ancient thinkers.
B.We should only learn from Confucius and Mozi.
C.Ancient thinkers’ ideas are still valuable and we should learn from them.
D.Ancient wisdom is more useful than modern science.
28.What does the underlined word “advocated” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Stopped. B.Supported and promoted. C.Forgot. D.Argued against.
29.How does the writer support his opinion in Paragraph 3?
A.By telling a funny story.
B.By listing numbers and data.
C.By citing views of modern scientists.
D.By asking a question.
30.What is the structure of this passage?
A.① / ②③ / ④ B.①② / ③ / ④ C.① / ② / ③④ D.①②③ / ④

【原文】
I’m a boy who likes traveling very much. Before I go on vacation, I always plan my trip very carefully. I usually look up all the necessary information on my own and collected ahead of time.
To begin with, I look up possible places of interest and compared them carefully to see which one satisfies my needs best. Second, I check the cost of traveling to that place. If I want to go by plane, I will compare the prices of the different airlines in order to get the cheapest tickets. If I plan to travel by train, I will look into the special train ticket office. I travel by bus least because of the high risk of travel accidents on the highway. Third, as for hotels, I used to choose to stay in cheap hotels. But now I think sleeping comfortably is the most important. At last, it’s better to spend less on meals and sightseeing. If I plan carefully, I can usually have a good time at a proper price.
