That’s why self-control is very important. The good news is that you can learn it. There is some useful advice. Let’s take a look! Know the bigger picture Before starting your work, think about why you want to do it. This helps you focus on your long-term goals. Besides, you should ask yourself how to do it. It can make you think about the steps you need to take to reach the goals. Make plans and check them People with self-control usually follow routines(常规). It’s also good to write down what you did each day. This helps you see how well your plan works. If the plan doesn’t work well, you may need to make some small changes. Think positive Self-control doesn’t mean being perfect! If you don’t follow your plan today, don’t feel sad. You can try again by saying, “Today I studied 10 minutes longer than yesterday!” In this way, you can build confidence. 1. What’s the main purpose of this passage? A. To find out what takes a teenager’s attention away. B. To explain why self-control is so important. C. To share good news about teenagers’ lives. D. To show teenagers how to learn self-control. 2. What’s the “bigger picture” for a teenager? A. A long-term goal. B. The first step. C. A working diary. D. The self-confidence. 3. What will people with self-control do if they fail to follow their plans? A. Find the reasons. B. Change the steps. C. Make new plans. D. Think positive. B What do you do for good luck? People all over the world have their own special and wonderful ways to draw in good luck and keep away from bad luck. In Italy, when people find themselves in an unlucky situation, they use the gesture (手势) of the “horns (角)” to avoid any further bad luck. This gesture is usually made with the little and index fingers (食指) pointing downward. However, you must be careful with the direction. When the gesture is pointing upward, the meaning becomes completely different. It can be very rude and upsetting. The Danish have a very old tradition of breaking dishes at the doorsteps of family, friends, and neighbors on New Year’s Eve. In the days before December 31st, people buy old dishes and save them for the celebration. As the clock strikes midnight, people run around hurling (用力掷) dishes at someone’s front door. But today, as throwing whole plates can be dangerous and leave quite a mess, more people choose to pre-break their plates and put the pieces at the doorsteps of family, friends, and neighbors. The bigger the pile (堆) you end up with, the more luck you will have in the upcoming year! Will you think it lucky when a bird drops a “surprise” on you while you’re out walking? In many parts of the world, people think so! For example, Russians believe that a single droplet (滴) means money is on the way. And in Turkish culture, getting hit by bird droppings means something positive is about to happen. These beliefs show how a nuisance can change into a positive symbol across different areas and traditions. So next time a bird chooses you — maybe it’s not so bad after all! Of course, there are more fun customs in the world. Let’s explore them together to improve our cultural knowledge. 4. Why should people avoid pointing the “horns” upward in Italy? A. It causes physical harm to others. B. It means something bad to others. C. It is only used during specific festivals. D. It is considered disrespectful to animals. 5. Why do some Danish people pre-break plates nowadays? A. It’s required by law. B. It’s a new tradition. C. It’s safer and less messy. D. It’s a way to save money. 6. What does the underlined word “nuisance” in paragraph 4 mean? A. A little trouble. B. A good luck sign. C. A cultural tradition. D. A dangerous event. 7. What can we learn about the customs from the passage? A. Europeans have the same customs about luck. B. Customs about luck can be very different. C. Old customs are always changed for safety. D. Keeping traditions alive is getting harder. C Mathilde Wittock, a designer from Belgium, has found a creative way to make resting chairs—without any wood or plastic. Instead, each of her chairs is carefully made up of 500 old tennis balls, making them not only eye-catching but surprisingly strong enough to support adults. Big tennis events around the world use a large number of balls, like the U.S. Open with 70,000 and Wimbledon with 55,000. Yet a tennis ball’s life is short, lasting only about nine games. Each year, around 300 million tennis balls are produced and almost all of them end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场). Worse still, they take over 400 years to decompose because their rubber and felt materials don’t break down easily. Wittock hopes her work can help protect the environment. To make her chairs, Wittock receives most of her materials from local tennis clubs, which are happy to give away used balls. Creating one chair takes her three to four weeks of careful work. To make each piece special, she cuts and paints the tennis balls by hand, matching colors to her customers’ rooms. This process requires lots of patience, but the result is a chair that’s both comfortable to sit on and a conversation starter. For Wittock, though, creating the chair is just the first step. What matters most to her is to make sure the chair has a “second life” when it’s no longer used. She takes old chairs apart and recycles every tennis ball: the fuzz (绒毛) is burned off, and the rubber is cut into small pieces to make bouncy mats (弹性垫) for kids’ playgrounds. In this way, nothing goes to waste. 8. What’s special about Mathilde Wittock’s resting chairs? A. They are made of wood and plastic. B. They are made of used tennis balls. C. People can only buy them in Belgium. D. They are too beautiful to be seated on. 9. What does the underlined word “decompose” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. To become chairs. B. To wash away the landfills. C. To grow from land. D. To divide into smaller parts. 10. What is true about Mathilde Wittock making chairs? A. She doesn’t have enough balls. B. She makes chairs for tennis clubs. C. She makes chairs all by hand. D. She meets customers’ different needs. 11. What’s the last paragraph mainly about? A. How to keep on cutting down waste. B. How to make tennis balls into mats. C. How to improve the design of chairs. D. How to take tennis balls apart quickly. D Did you ever wish you could show your dreams to your friends or family? Now you might be able to, with a new device (设备) that uses AI to create videos from spoken words. The Dream Recorder, created by the Dutch design studio Modem, is a bedside device on which you can record your dreams and play them back as short videos. The idea is that as soon as you wake up, you push a record button on the Dream Recorder and speak into it—in any language—describing what you remember of your dream. AI technology will then interpret your spoken dream and create a short video according to it in a visual style (视觉风格) of your choice. You can then play back this video on the Dream Recorder’s screen. The creators of the Dream Recorder say these videos can be used to help you think about the meaning of your dreams and how they might affect your waking life. However, you can’t keep these dream videos forever, because the Dream Recorder only has enough memory (存储量) for seven days of dreams. That should be long enough to see if there are any repeated themes in your dreams, while keeping your mind on the present. The Dream Recorder is also an open-source (开放源代码的) DIY device that you can build yourself. All the code and the details you need to build it are available to download for free online. All you need to do is buy or 3D print the parts you need to make it. 12. Why was the Dream Recorder created? A. To replace traditional alarm clocks. B. To turn people’s dreams into videos. C. To help people sleep without dreaming D. To allow people to easily share dreams online. 13. What does the underlined word “interpret” probably mean? A. fix B. forget C. match D. understand 14. Why was the device designed to keep dreams for seven days? A. To encourage users to focus on the present. B. To prevent the device from breaking down. C. To protect the users’ personal information. D. To make the device cost as little as possible. 15. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The company will send free parts to users. B. Anyone can build this device if they want to. C. It won’t be easy to buy the device in the future. D. Users need professional skills to create the device. 第二节(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。 We live in a world full of choices. Perhaps everyone has experienced FOBO. At the side of roads, behind school playgrounds and on all kinds of unloved pieces of land across towns and cities, tiny forests of the size of an area for playing tennis are appearing. They are becoming great places for both wildlife and local people to get close to nature. This is the Tiny Forests movement. It hopes to show that the best things in life really come in small actions. Tiny Forests first appeared as an idea in the 1970s by Dr Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist (植物学家). As he went on to share the idea with others, it soon took off in many places in India and other Asian countries before finally reaching Europe, where it became popular. So how does it work? Louise Hartley, who is leading the Tiny Forest project in the UK, explains that the process begins with areas in which a tiny forest could have the biggest influence. The movement focuses on cities where getting close to nature is not very easy. “We see it as a chance to try to break the growing disconnect between people and nature,” says Hartley In a Tiny Forest, there must be at least 600 trees, and trees are planted much closer together and without chemical fertilizers (化学肥料). There are usually around 30 different kinds of trees from the local area. This can help make sure that tiny forests grow up to ten times faster than other forests. It’s thought that Tiny Forest could help reduce the risk of flooding, remove carbon (碳) from the air and fight climate change. It is even said to be useful in improving the health of the local people. Now more and more countries are considering becoming part of the movement, which means more tiny forests will appear soon. 41. Here are the results about our survey. As shown in the chart, 40% of the students choose to talk to their friends. 35% of them share their worries with teachers. 15% of the students talk to their parents, and 10% of them don’t talk to anyone. In my opinion, we should talk to our parents or teachers when we are stressed. Because they have more experience and can give us useful advice. To relax ourselves, here are two suggestions. First, we can listen to soft music or do sports, which can help us feel relaxed. Second, it is a good idea to read interesting books. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
