Mama and Her Bank Account
Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa /pəˈpɑː/
had brought home.
“For the rent.” Mama would count out the big silver pieces(银币).
“For the groceries.” Another group of coins.

“I’ll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine[/ˈkrɪstiːn/克里斯蒂娜], my brother Nels or me.
Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest(怀着忐忑好奇的心情). At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?” And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.” We were all so proud of Mama’s Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling.
When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said.
Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank(小金库)”. It was used for sudden emergencies, such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor.
Grammar school
In the United States, the name “grammar school” was adopted by public schools for children from 10 to 14 years of age, following a primary stage from 5 to 9 years of age. Formerly known as “grammar schools”, these two programmes were united in to a single 8-year
elementary school system by 1990.
Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. “We do not want to go to the Bank,” she
reminded. We all shook our heads.
“I will work in Dillon’s [/ˈdɪlən/狄龙] grocery after school,” Nels volunteered.
Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That’s not enough,” Papa said. Then he took his pipe out of his mouth and looked at it for a long time.
“I will give up smoking,” he said suddenly.
what
的对面] the table and touched Papa’s arm. Then she wrote down another figure.
“I will [(表示愿意)愿,要,会,定要] look after the Elvington[/ˈelvɪŋtən/埃尔温顿 ] children every Friday night,” I said. “Christine can help me.”
Now there was enough money. We all felt very good because we did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama’s Bank Account.
So many things came out of [ 由…产生(或形成)] the Little Bank that year: Christine’s dress for the school play,my little sister Dagmar’s (/ˈdæɡmɑː(r)/达格玛) operation ... Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the Bank to depend upon.
That was twenty years ago.

“That won’t be necessary. Just hand it to the teller. He’ll pay it into your account.”

Write a summary of the story.
When the author was little, her mother made up a fake bank account, bringing the whole poor family a sense of security. Faced with costs for her brother’s further study, all family members tried their best to earn money instead of using the account. Years later, the author finally learned the truth that no such account existed, for her mother lied just to protect children from fear and insecurity.
Whenever the family was in need of money for various purposes, the mum was always able to show that they had the money. She made her children feel safe by
pretending that she had a bank account for the family. The children grew up happily and the truth was not found out until one day when the daughter was told that her
mum had never been into a bank in all her life. To the children, “Mama’s Bank Account” stands for their mother’s love and the security she provided for them.
B.Have your parents done something that has moved you greatly? What was it? Share your story. Page 26
Parents’ love is the most selfless love in the world, and there is one thing that always moves me deeply.
As a senior school student, I often feel stressed and even upset about my grades. Once I failed an important exam, I felt hopeless and wanted to give up. Instead of blaming me, my parents chose to comfort and encourage me patiently. They stayed with me quietly, told me not to be too hard on myself and reminded me that progress matters more than temporary results.
What moves me most is that they always stand by my side unconditionally, no matter what difficulties I meet. Their love and support give me great strength to keep moving forward. I am truly grateful for their endless love.
