Life-like Robots Go on Sale in Beijing
Life-like robots, including an Albert Einstein robot, went on sale in Beijing, China recently.
A new robot store has opened in Beijing selling humanoid (人形的) robots. These robots can be home helpers, cooks, or copies of famous scientists.
According to a report, the store offering 100 kinds of products is the first of its kind in the East Asian country to sell humanoid robots for everyday use. The store is located next to a robot-themed restaurant where food is cooked and served by robots.
The store boss Wang Yifan said, “If we want robots to go into many homes, just robot companies can’t do it alone.” Many of the companies have no experience in sales and there are few chances to show their products, he added. The store allows visitors to touch and play with many different robots from chess players to dogs. The humanoid robots are priced between 2,000 yuan and over a million yuan.
China is one of the top countries in robot technology. This year, the government plans to give 100 billion yuan to help new robot and AI companies grow.
The store opened during the World Robot Conference in Beijing in August. This event ran for five days. More than 200 companies from China and other countries showed 1,500 robot products.

Make invisible ink
Today, we’re going to make something amazing — invisible ink, feeling just like a scene from an exciting film! In this experiment, you’ll learn how to write messages and draw pictures that only you know how to reveal (显形). With just a few simple materials, this experiment creates a world of mystery and excitement for you.
What you need for the experiment
Cotton swabs
A lamp
White paper
A bowl
Lemons
A little water
Step-by-step instructions
★ Prepare your ink: Squeeze (挤压) some lemon juice into a bowl, and then add a few drops of water to dilute (稀释) it.
★ Write your message: Dip (蘸) a cotton swab into your lemon juice mixture, and use it as a pen to write a message or create a drawing on the white paper.
★ Let it dry: Wait a bit for the paper to dry. The lemon juice will become invisible as it dries, hiding your message from your eyes.
★ Reveal the secret: When you’re ready to show your message, hold the paper close to a lamp. Watch as the heat slowly brings your message to light!
The science behind invisible ink
The secret behind it lies in the chemistry of lemon juice. In lemon juice, there are carbon-based compounds (碳基化合物) that are colourless at room temperature, keeping your message invisible. However, when you introduce heat from a lamp, these compounds break down and release (释放) carbon. The carbon oxidizes (氧化) when it comes into contact with air. This process turns the carbon brown, revealing your message to the world.
15. What is the main purpose of this experiment?
A. To make a special kind of paper.
B. To write and reveal hidden messages.
C. To learn how to grow lemons.
D. To understand how lamps produce heat.
16. How do you reveal the hidden message?
A. By adding more lemon juice
B. By putting the paper in water.
C. By heating the paper with a lamp.
D. By using a special camera.
17. We can infer from the passage that the invisible ink experiment ________.
A. is very expensive to do at home
B. can only be done in a science lab
C. is a safe and easy activity for most people
D. requires advanced (高级的) chemistry knowledge

Even if you disagree, being respectful makes it easier for family members to pay attention to you as well. ____21____ Express yourself clearly

Choose the right time
____23____ Choose a more relaxing time, such as after dinner, so both of you can feel at ease.
Set healthy boundaries (界限) with respect
____24____ If your parents are breaking the rules such as not respecting your privacy, it’s okay to voice your thoughts in an effective yet gentle way. It’s also important to be patient when you discuss your feelings.
Keep practicing

Chopsticks: A Symbol of Chinese Culture
Chopsticks are used by billions of people around the world, and they have an ancient past. The Chinese have been using them for at least 3,000 years. About 1,500 years ago, chopsticks were brought to some other Asian countries.
Early chopsticks were mainly used for cooking and were able to reach deep into boiling pots of water or oil. Later, people used chopsticks as tableware. This happened when a rapid population growth across China made cooks develop cost-saving habits. They began cutting food into smaller pieces that required less cooking fuel. Chopsticks are perfect for holding these smaller pieces of food.
When food could be eaten in one bite, knives were not needed very much anymore. Knives became less common, and chopsticks became more popular. This change was also influenced by Confucius. He thought that having knives on the dinner table would make people think of killing animals. He also believed that the sharp points of knives brought thoughts of fighting and war, which would take away the joy of eating. Because of his ideas, chopsticks soon became widely used across Asia.
Wood and bamboo are the most common materials for chopsticks. Workers first cut them into thin strips of the same size, then sand the surface to make it smooth. Some chopsticks get simple carvings or oil coating for protection. Even mass-produced chopsticks follow strict quality rules to be safe and sturdy for daily use. Whether handmade or machine-made, each pair of chopsticks carries the special meaning of traditional culture. Whenever and wherever Chinese people are, they find it difficult to have a meal without chopsticks. In addition, chopsticks can be presented as a gift or function as a unique handcraft for people to share and express their feelings.
According to a survey, over 1.8 billion people use chopsticks. Chopstick culture is very important all over the world. It has become a common cultural symbol of Chinese food culture.

Passage 1 He Liyan, 15
I know what I value most—the time I spend with my grandparents. They live in the countryside. Every weekend, I go to visit them. Grandma always makes my favorite sweet-potato cakes. Grandpa teaches me to water the vegetables in his garden. We sit under the old tree after dinner, listening to him tell stories about his childhood. It is so relaxing.
Now I’m busy with Grade 9 studies, so I can’t go there as often. But those happy moments are always in my heart. Their love is simple but warm. I know this kind of time is something that I won’t always have. That’s why I value it more than anything else.
Passage 2 Huang Anqi, 13
I cherish time itself. As a music student I have training plus schoolwork, so I’ve learnt to respect every minute. Yet I also treasure the time I “waste”: playing with my dog, watching funny videos, travelling with friends and so on. Those “doing nothing” minutes make me relax. I’m grateful that I have plenty of time to work hard. Being young, I know that time is all I have and all I need.
Passage 3 Zhang Hangming, 17
I cherish my travel memories most. I love traveling and taking pictures, so I record all the fun moments of my trips with my camera. This includes not only the great scenery, but also small stories-a local’s friendly face or a quiet street in the morning.
After each trip, I put together a video as my travel journal. As a student, I am under a lot of pressure. But every time I watch my videos, they help me relax and fill my heart with warmth and joy.
