Su Qin and Zhang Yi were famous strategists (战略家) during the Warring States Period (475-221 BCE). In their youth, they were classmates and close friends.
When Su Qin got a high position in the government, Zhang Yi went to ask for his help. He thought that his old friend would help him achieve a high position, too. But when Zhang Yi arrived, Su Qin was cold. He said to his old friend, “For all these years, you’ve achieved nothing. You’re not talented. I can’t help you.” Zhang Yi was shocked by these words. With his determination, and with Su Qin’s secret help, Zhang Yi did achieve great success. Then Su Qin’s subordinate planned to leave. Zhang Yi said, “Why are you leaving? Crows (乌鸦) can use tools and even remember people’s faces. Now, scientists in Germany have found something new — crows can tell different shapes apart.
At the University of Tubingen, two friendly crows lived in a lab. The scientists wanted to see how smart they really were. These crows already knew how to count a little. So the scientists gave them a new test with shapes.
In the test, the birds looked at six shapes on a screen. Five shapes were the same, and one was different. If a crow picked the shape that was not the same, it got a snack. At first, the shapes were easy to tell apart (区分).
Later, the test got harder. The crows saw difficult shapes like squares and shapes that looked almost like squares. Even though it was harder, the crows still picked the right shape most of the time. They even kept doing it after the snacks stopped coming!
This showed that crows can really find the differences between shapes. The scientists shared their study in a science magazine on April 11, 2025. Before this, only people were known to do this.
Why do crows have this skill? The scientists don’t know exactly. Maybe it helps them find food, fly safely, or tell other crows apart by their faces. They also want to know which part of the crow’s brain does the shape work, since crows don’t have the same brain part as humans. They hope other people will study smart animals too. Maybe other animals can learn shapes as well!
21. What’s the function (功能) of Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4?
A. To introduce why crows know different shapes.
B. To tell us crows can connect shapes with prizes.
C. To explain why crows can remember things well.
D. To show crows can see the differences between shapes.
22. What can we infer about crows from the scientists?
A. They don’t like scientific tests. B. They can only tell the shapes.
C. They learn better with human help. D. They may need to know shapes to live.
23. What can we know from the underlined sentence “Before this, only people were known to do this.”?
A. Crows are the only animals that can tell shapes apart.
B. Scientists had never studied crows before this.
C. People once thought only humans could tell shapes apart.
D. The study was not published until 2025.
24. What do the scientists hope?
A. Crows can become pets.
B. To explain why crows have larger brains than humans.
C. Crows can be the smartest animals.
D. To find more animals that might have similar abilities.
25. What’s the best structure of the text?
A. ①②/③④/⑤⑥ B. ①/②③④⑤/⑥ C. ①②③/④⑤⑥ D. ①/②/③/④/⑤/⑥

Do you overthink?
If you lie awake at night, thinking over a decision you made earlier that day or worrying about tomorrow’s to-do list, you might be overthinking. Overthinking means going over the same thought again and again, analyzing the simplest of situations or events far past their usefulness. But why do people overthink?
According to The Conversation, overthinking comes from one of our primitive instincts (原始本能). The primitive mind will always see things in the worst possible side. Our brains are always looking for threats (威胁), to make a plan to address those threats and keep us safe. Those threats may come from past experiences or the “what ifs (假设)” we imagine for the future.
Some people believe that overthinking may be helpful. However, research suggests that overthinking can lead to stress, nervousness, and depression. What’s more, overthinking can hurt relationships. Thinking the worst and making wrong guesses can lead to conflicts (冲突) with other people.
So, instead of sitting and thinking about a problem endlessly, you can distract (转移注意力) yourself for a bit. Your brain might find better ways to solve the problem while you’re doing something fun, like gardening. Also, when you find yourself overthinking, challenge these thoughts. Ask yourself if they make sense and think about other possibilities. It can be difficult at first, but learning to judge your overthinking correctly can help you ________________.
