After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.
One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.
41. The reason for Robert’s attempts to kill himself was that ________.
A. he had to live in a dark and silent world
B. a terrible traffic accident happened to him
C. he was struck by the lightning once more
D. nobody in the world cared about him
42. What was Robert doing when he was struck by the lightning?
A. Taking a walk with a stick. B. Driving a car.
C. Sheltering from the rain under a tree. D. Lying on the ground.
43. What did Robert see first when he regained his sight after the shock?
A. A plough and a wall.
B. His neighbors.
C. His wife who called for help to save him.
D. Many doctors surrounding him.
44. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Robert had been deaf and blind for nearly ten years.
B. Robert hid himself under the tree for 20 minutes.
C. Robert could hear his wife’s shouting for help when he woke up.
D. The family’s love helped Robert regain confidence to live.
45. We can infer from the text that ________.
A. many doctors came because Robert was badly injured
B. a sudden injury in the head led to Robert’s recovery
C. Robert’s wife sent for doctors immediately after the shock
D. there was no accurate explanation for Robert’s recovery
C
The temperature is sharply rising with each passing day. People, including many experts, find it difficult to slow down the process. However, leaving coal and major fossil fuels in the ground could help to limit climate change in the future, according to a new study. That is to say, a third of oil reserves on the earth, half of gas reserves and over 80 percent of current coal reserves should not be used before the year 2050. If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.
“Policy makers in different countries must realize that their attempt to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries is wholly incompatible (矛盾的) with their hope to reach the2-degree goal,” Dr. Christophe Mc Glade at University College London’s Energy Institute said in a statement. “If they go ahead with developing their own resources,” he added, “they must be asked which reserves elsewhere should remain unburned in order for the carbon budget not to go beyond the limit.”
It’s not surprising to see how tapping into these unused reserves would be attractive. Energy-related industry is a big business all over the world. There are many coal reserves in China, Russia and the United States, along with over 260 thousand million barrels of oil reserves in the Middle East. Not to mention that oil is currently being developed in the Arctic. Companies spent over $670 billion last year in the expansion of fossil fuels, but according to the new model used in this latest study, developers may need to rethink their plans to develop these underground resources so as to make some contributions to control the world temperature from rising high in the future.
“We’ve now got practical figures of the quantities and locations of fossil fuels that should remain unused in trying to keep within the 2-degree temperature limit,” added Mc Glade. World leaders and policy makers should take the advice to heart, because a recent IPCC report warned that if immediate and great actions are not taken soon, climate change will cause irreversible (不可逆转的) impacts on environments worldwide, leaving the world an unsafe place for us to live in.
46. According to Paragraph 1, our goal is to ______.
A. discover more fossil fuels for the future generation
B. slow down the climate change
C. keep the temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius
D. refuse to use reserves on the earth
47. The underlined word “emissions” in Paragraph 1 refers to ______.
A. things that are sent out into the air
B. products that are made from fossil fuels
C. factors that cause the climate change
D. changes that happen after temperature rise
48. According to what Mc Glade said in Paragraph 2, all countries should ______.
A. make full use of their fossil fuels
B. work together towards the 2-degree goal
C. find better ways to dig out the coal
D. increase the global carbon budget
49. We can infer from Paragraph 3 that great efforts have been made in ______.
A. developing fossil fuels around the world
B. getting people to rethink their fuel plans
C. digging out the oil in the Middle East
D. developing energy-related industry worldwide
50. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of temperature control?
A. Confident. B. Unclear. C. Satisfied. D. Negative.
D
One of the statements that many experts seem to agree on is the fact that the great things starts to happen the minute you step outside of your comfort zones. As soon as you decide that you are willing to go beyond what is safe, the possibilities are endless. For me, one of the most important things that we should always keep in mind is the fact that growth and comfort can’t coexist.
Personal development author Napoleon Hill once said: “Whatever the mind can understand and believe, the mind can achieve. Regardless of how many times you may have failed in the past or how lofty(崇高的) your aims and hopes may be.” This statement is especially powerful because it reminds us that we are the only ones who can be responsible for how far we will go. However, stepping outside of our comfort zone is probably the most important step to experiencing real change.
For a long time, I knew that I wanted to live in Argentina, so halfway through my bachelor’s degree, I bought a one-way ticket there. While in Argentina, I finished the last two years of my degree online before flying back home for graduation. I currently still live in Argentina, and I can proudly say that taking the necessary steps to make it a reality was one of the most important things I could have done.
This, of course, by no means at all applies to everyone, and I’m not implying we should all buy one-way tickets to foreign countries and see what happens. But it’s important to know that we should recognize what we desire and try to bring our dreams to life.
Living in a comfort zone can trick us into believing that we have an abundant amount of time when, in reality, we all know that years can fly by without us having accomplished much of what we really wanted to do. So why wait? I’m thankful that I didn’t put off my move until a later date because I would have missed out on a lot of amazing life experiences that have shaped me as a person. If we want to experience even a small amount of change, we will have to step outside of it.
51. Why do people prefer staying in comfort zone?
A. It makes people feel safe.
B. It leads to great things.
C. It is important for growth.
D. It helps make wise decisions.
52. What does Napoleon Hill’s statement mean?
A. Time and tide wait for no man.
B. The higher you fly, the harder you fail.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
53. Which matters most to the author in his/her story?
A. Moving to Argentina.
B. Getting the bachelor’s degree.
C. Studying online.
D. Flying back for graduation.
54. The author used his/her story to ________.
A. persuade others to follow his/her example
B. encourage others to take immediate action
C. inform people of different foreign culture
D. remind people to be thankful in life
55. Which one could be the best title?
A. Identify your comfort zone.
B. Value your precious time.
C. Always try something new.
D. Make the best decisions.

When Dan Shaw gets up from the sofa in his home, Cuddles is never far away. When he wants to go outside, he doesn’t take Cuddles out for walk—Cuddles takes him for a walk. Cuddles is clearly no ordinary family pet. It is a two-foot-high miniature horse and serves as the guiding eyes of Shaw, who is blind.
When Shaw lost his sight, his wife suggested he apply for a guide dog. Shaw, an animal lover, said he couldn’t bear to part with a dog (which usually lives about eight to ten years) and get used to a new one, perhaps several times in his life.
Then Shaw heard of a program about the tiny guide horses. He learned that the horse possess many qualities that make them an excellent choice for guiding people. They are clean friendly, smart and have great memories. They can be trained to remain calm in noisy and crowded places. Best of all, they live for 25-25years, which would enable Shaw to have the same guide companion for most or all of his life.
Shaw immediately applied to be and was accepted as the first person to receive a guide horse. The instant he met Cuddles, he knew he was making the right choice. Then he began his training.
Through training ,Shaw and Cuddles learned to find way on busy streets, step over curbs(便道沿儿)and find elevator buttons. Cuddles even demonstrated(显示)its ability to step in front of Shaw and block him, to prevent him from walking into a dangerous situation.

A. Confident. B. Unclear. C. Satisfied. D. Negative.
【答案】46. C 47. A 48. B 49. A 50. D

【导语】本文是议论文。文章围绕全球气候变化和化石燃料使用的问题展开讨论,提出了限制化石燃料开采和使用以控制全球温度上升的观点。
【46题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.(如果我们要防止全球气温在不久的将来上升超过2摄氏度,我们应该采取一些措施来严格控制工厂车辆甚至我们日常生活中的烹饪的排放。然而,在我们看来,这是一个似乎不可能实现的目标)”可知,我们的目标是把温度上升控制在2摄氏度以下。故选C项。
【47题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“However, leaving coal and major fossil fuels in the ground could help to limit climate change in the future, according to a new study. That is to say, a third of oil reserves on the earth, half of gas reserves and over 80 percent of current coal reserves should not be used before the year 2050. If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future(然而,一项新的研究表明,将煤炭和主要化石燃料留在地下可能有助于限制未来的气候变化。 故选A项。
【48题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段““Policy makers in different countries must realize that their attempt to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries is wholly incompatible (矛盾的) with their hope to reach the2-degree goal,” Dr. Christophe Mc Glade at University College London’s Energy Institute said in a statement. “If they go ahead with developing their own resources,” he added, “they must be asked which reserves elsewhere should remain unburned in order for the carbon budget not to go beyond the limit.”(伦敦大学学院能源研究所的Christophe Mc Glade博士在一份声明中说:“不同国家的政策制定者必须意识到,他们在国内完全使用化石燃料的尝试与他们实现2摄氏度目标的希望是完全不相容的。”“如果他们继续开发自己的资源,”他补充说,“必须问他们,其他地方的哪些储量应该保留下来,以使碳预算不超过限制。”)”可知,根据Mc Glade说的,所有国家都应该共同努力实现2摄氏度的目标。故选B项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“There are many coal reserves in China, Russia and the United States, along with over 260 thousand million barrels of oil reserves in the Middle East. Not to mention that oil is currently being developed in the Arctic. Companies spent over $670 billion last year in the expansion of fossil fuels, but according to the new model used in this latest study, developers may need to rethink their plans to develop these underground resources so as to make some contributions to control the world temperature from rising high in the future.(中国、俄罗斯和美国有大量的煤炭储量,中东地区有超过260亿桶的石油储量。更不用说目前正在北极开发的石油了。去年,公司在化石燃料的开发上花费了超过6700亿美元,但根据这项最新研究中使用的新模型,开发商可能需要重新考虑他们开发这些地下资源的计划,以便为控制未来的全球气温上升做出一些贡献)”可知,世界各地在开发化石燃料方面做出了巨大的努力。故选A项。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“If we are to prevent global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees Celsius in the near future, we ought to carry some measures to severely control the emissions from factories vehicles and even our daily-life cooking. However, it is a goal that seems to be impossible in our eyes.(如果我们要防止全球气温在不久的将来上升超过2摄氏度,我们应该采取一些措施来严格控制工厂车辆甚至我们日常生活中的烹饪的排放。然而,在我们看来,这是一个似乎不可能实现的目标)”可知,作者认为这是一个似乎不可能实现的目标,所以是消极的。故选D项。

【答案】51. A 52. D 53. A 54. B 55. C

The little horse also expertly led Shaw through busy shopping malls. They got along without any difficulties. Now Shaw is confident that Cuddles will change his life for the better.
