This is a tale of two friends — one is blind, the other has no arms. On their own, the two are “disabled”. But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Meet 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!
Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi, lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee. Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise (乐土). Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. when the sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and with Wenqi’s direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area.
Though hard-working, the men don’t make much money. But as Wenqi puts it, “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter.”
Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. Together, they already have everything they need — a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world!
21. Why did Haixia and Wenqi start working together?
A. Haixia needed someone to help him. B. They both needed a way to make money.

A. They are easy to get. B. They do not cost money.

A. they hope to make the forest even better B. the fruits from their trees are very sweet
C. they are proud not to depend on others D. they are able to do any difficult work

B
When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感的)Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them anymore; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
26. The author brought the middle-aged couple their food very fast because ________.
A. the manager asked the author to do so B. the author respected the elderly
C. the couple wanted the author to do so D. the author wanted more pay
27. What may be the meaning of the underlined word “embarrassment” in Paragraph 1?

28. In the author’s hometown, ________.
A. people dislike being called “old”
B. people are proud of being old
C. many people reach the age of seventy or eighty
D. the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants
29. After this experience, the author ________.
A. lost the job in the restaurant B. made friends with the couple
C. no longer respected the elderly D. changed the way with older people
30. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The more the author explained, the angrier the couple got.
B. The author wanted to show his/her feelings through words after this experience.
C. The manager went back to the table and apologized to the couple.
D. From this experience, the author learned more about American culture.

I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.(我的经理刚好听到了我说的话,便把我叫到一旁,长篇大论地讲了美国人有多么敏感,以及他们不喜欢“老”这个词的描述。

I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.(然而在美国,人们认为“变老”是一种问题,因为“老”意味着一个人即将退休,或身体机能已经下降。
C
Are you good at shopping? Can you make the best of your money?
People often call me a smart shopper. It’s because I always make the best of my money and buy the most suitable things. Here are the ways I do the shopping.
I never buy too many things. I usually make a shopping list before I go shopping. I write down what I need and buy them one by one. I never say, “It is so cheap. I will buy it.” I buy something only because I need it, not because of the cheap price. So I waste no money on cheap things.
I always make a plan. I know how much money I can use to buy the things every time. I know money doesn’t come out on trees. I don’t often spend more than the plan.
I usually go shopping at the right place and the right time. I don’t like to go to those shops with too many people. Too many people around me often make me spend more. And I don’t go shopping when I’m tired or hungry, so I don’t buy things in a hurry. I go shopping after meals because walking helps me digest the food, too.
Do you want to be a smarter shopper? Try my ways!
31. Why do people call the writer a smart shopper?
A. Because she is always good at buying too many things.

D. The writer thinks too many people in a shop are good for right shopping.
35. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A. the advantage of making a plan B. the advantage of shopping

根据第二段中“People often call me a smart shopper. It’s because I always make the best of my money and buy the most suitable things.(人们常叫我精明的购物者。这是因为我总能充分利用我的钱,买到最合适的东西)”可知,人们称作者为精明的购物者是因为她通常能买到最合适的商品。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第三段中“I buy something only because I need it, not because of the cheap price.(我买东西只因为我需要它,而不是因为价格便宜)”可知,作者在购物时关心的是自己的实际需求。
根据第五段中“I go shopping after meals because walking helps me digest the food, too.(我饭后去购物,因为散步也有助于digest食物)”可知,饭后散步有助于“分解消化”食物以促进吸收。

Teenage life — better now, or in the past?
Does this situation sound familiar (熟悉)?
You are complaining (抱怨) to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn’t powerful enough to play the latest games. ____36____ Then you hear...
“When I was your age, there weren’t any computers or video games. And I didn’t get a bike until I was sixteen. And it was second-hand. ____37____”
So, is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. ____38____ So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children.
____39____ Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones. And now these things are necessary — we can’t imagine living without them!
However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it’s just us, with our computer or television. Teenagers don’t do enough exercise. ____40____ And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don’t have so many social activities as they did in the past.
What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?
A. And it was too big for me.
B. A typical family is small now.
C. Or your friends’ bikes are better than yours.
D. So they aren’t as healthy as they were in the past.
E. Technology is probably the greatest change in our life.
F. Maybe my computer isn’t the latest model.
G. No one can predict the future.
C 37. A 38. B 39. E 40. D
上文“Maybe your computer isn’t powerful enough to play the latest games.(也许你的电脑性能不够强大,玩不了最新的游戏)”说明青少年在抱怨电脑配置不够好。 C项中的“bikes”与下文父母回应的“I didn’t get a bike”相呼应。
上文“And I didn’t get a bike until I was sixteen. And it was second-hand.(而且我直到十六岁才得到一辆自行车。还是二手的)”说明父母在描述自己年轻时得到的自行车的状况。空处承接前文,继续描述这辆旧自行车的缺点。所以A项“而且它对当时的我来说太大了。”符合语境。A项进一步补充了旧自行车的不便之处。
【38题详解】
下文“So parents have got more money to spend on each child.(因此父母有更多的钱花在每个孩子身上)”说明结果:家庭经济宽裕。
下文“Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smartphones. And now these things are necessary — we can’t imagine living without them!(四十年前,没有人能想象一个拥有微型电脑和令人惊叹的智能手机的世界。
D项中的“they aren’t as healthy as they were in the past”直接回应了前文“exercise”的缺失结果。

C. They wanted to improve the environment. D. They were required to do so by local officials.
22. Haixia and Wenqi’s forest has helped the village by _________.
A. stopping floods in the rainy season B. increasing the number of tourists
C. making the villagers richer D. providing more farmland
23. Why do Haixia and Wenqi plant tree branches?
A. They are easy to get. B. They do not cost money.
C. They can grow very quickly. D. They are preferred by animals.
24. In Paragraph 3, when Wenqi says “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter”, he means that _________.
A. they hope to make the forest even better B. the fruits from their trees are very sweet
C. they are proud not to depend on others D. they are able to do any difficult work
25. What can we learn from this story?
A. Never give up and you will succeed. B. We should help the disabled to work.
C. Try your best when facing difficulties. D. We can achieve more with teamwork.
